August 21, 2023CSTC #5: 21st - 27th August21st - 27th August Wrestling History!21st August2000:Lita defeated Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley to win the WWE Women’s title. This match was the first time in history that a women’s match main-evented Monday Night Raw.22nd August1999:A highly eventful WWE SummerSlam event took place. The main event saw Mankind defeat champion ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and Triple H in a triple threat match officiated by Minnesota governor Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura.23rd August1999:The night after SummerSlam, Triple H won his first WWE Championship when he defeated Mankind on ‘Raw Is War’. Mankind’s reign lasted less than 24 hours and would prove to be Mick Foley’s last WWE Championship reign.24th August1994: WCW presented Clash Of The Champions XXVIII at the Five Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The event was historic for a couple of reasons. The card was headlined by the first ever singles match between Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair. Flair won the match by countout. Additionally, Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat defeated Steve Austin to win the WCW United States Championship. Steamboat however suffered a back injury in this bout that forced him into retirement and this would be his last wrestling match until his three-match WWE comeback25th August2002: WWE SummerSlam 2002 took place at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. At the event, Brock Lesnar became the then youngest WWE Champion of all time when he defeated The Rock just a month after his 25th debut and less than six months after his WWE debut. Also, Shawn Michaels took part in his first WWE match since WrestleMania XIV in 1998 when he faced and defeated HHH in an Unsanctioned Street Fight. Michaels would subsequently return again to win the World Heavyweight Championship in the first Elimination Chamber match at Survivor Series the same year. He would then wrestle a full-time TV schedule until his retirement in 2010.26th August1991:SummerSlam took place at Madison Square Garden on this date with the tagline ‘A Match Made In Heaven, A Match Made In Hell.’ The first part related to the in-ring wedding of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth whereas the latter was Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior vs. Sgt. Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa & General Adnan. It also featured Bret Hart winning his first ever Intercontinental Championship.27th August 1995:Triple H (then known as Hunter Hearst Helmsley) made his in-ring PPV debut at Summerslam on this date in which he pinned Bob Holly following a Pedigree. August 14, 2023CSTC #4: 14th - 20th August14th - 20th August Wrestling History!14th August2011:SummerSlam 2011 saw CM Punk become the undisputed WWE Champion after defeating John Cena only to be cashed in on by Mr Money In The Bank Alberto Del Rio after Kevin Nash got a text, apparently telling him to “stick the winner”.15th August2004:SummerSlam 2004 featured many classic matches, including Kane defeating Matt Hardy to win the right to marry Lita in a ‘Till Death Do Us Part’ match. More notably, however, it was at this event that Randy Orton defeated Chris Benoit to become the youngest World Champion in history at the age of just 24.16th August2004:On a Raw episode airing from Ontario Canada, we saw a celebration for newly crowned World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton hosted by his Evolution teammates. All was well until Triple H pointed the thumbs down to signal the end of Orton’s time in Evolution and for the beat down to begin officially kicking him out of the group.17th August2014:SUPLEX CITY! SummerSlam became SuplexSlam when Brock Lesnar completely dominated John Cena to win the WWE Championship. 16 Suplexes and an F5 later and we had a new face of the company. Also on this night, Stephanie McMahon competed in her first match since 2003 in a successful effort against Brie Bella.18th August1993:WCW presents Clash of Champions XXIV. Big Van Vader defeated Davey Boy Smith in the main event to retain the WCW World Championship. More famously, The Shockmaster made his debut in a backstage segment, seamlessly and graciously bursting through a gimmicked wall with no mistakes made.19th August2002:After a series of title changes on the night between Bradshaw, Tommy Dreamer and Crash Holly, the 24/7 rule for the WWE Hardcore Title is discontinued. The title itself would be declared defunct one week later when Intercontinental Champion Rob Van Dam defeated Tommy Dreamer in a title unification match.20th August2001:Monday Night Raw played host to ‘Austin Appreciation Night’ as The Alliance paid tribute to their leader, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. August 07, 2023CSTC #3: 7th August - 13th August7th - 13th August Wrestling History!7th August2001:An eventful SmackDown tapings took place that saw Diamond Dallas Page and Kanyon become the first WCW tag team to hold the WWF Tag Team Championships when they beat the APA. Later in the show, Kane and The Undertaker became the first WWF team to win the WCW Tag Team Titles when they defeated Sean O’Haire and Chuck Palumbo. On the same show, Rhyno famously gored Chris Jericho through Smackdown’s ‘Ovaltron’. It was the last taping to use the original SmackDown set. A whole new set including the now iconic ‘Smackdown fist’ debuted the following week.8th August2016: On Raw Seth Rollins lays down a passionate claim to become the very first WWE Universal Champion against Finn Balor at Summerslam. Also tensions build between Raw and Smackdown LIVE when Daniel Bryan and Mick Foley come face-to-face with each other. And Lana and Rusev’s Celebration of Love is interrupted by The Big Dog.9th August1999:Chris Jericho made his long-awaited debut on an episode of Monday Night Raw. The weeks long ‘Countdown To The Millenium’ hit zero right in the middle of a promo by The Rock and Chris Jericho came out to declare Y2J had come to the WWF.10th August1976:The man who would go on to become Hulk Hogan has his first professional wrestling match against B. Brian Blair.11th August1997: On Raw Shawn Michaels returned to in-ring action against Mankind, and revealed his new insurance policy to be the returning Ravishing Rick Rude. Also on the show, The Nation of Domination revealed Rocky Maivia as its newest member.12th August1988: Curt Hennig and Owen Hart both make their WWF television debuts. Hennig wrestles under his real name and Hart competes as The Blue Blazer.13th August 1994:The very first ECW Hardcore Heaven event from took place in the ECW Arena in Philadelphia. Terry Funk and Cactus Jack fought to a no-contest in the main event after the tag-team of Public Enemy interfered. The WWE Hall Of Famer and former Intercontinental Champion passed away as a result of a heart attack.1st August1994:Shawn Michaels took part in his first match since losing to Razor Ramon in the iconic ladder match at WrestleMania X. In the main event of Monday Night Raw, Michaels defeated Ramon in a 23-minute barnburner.2nd August1992:Ron Simmons became the first African American to win a major world title in wrestling when he defeated Lex Luger to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in Baltimore, Maryland.3rd August1997: WWE SummerSlam took place at the Continental Airlines Arena in Rutherford, New Jersey. The main event saw Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart defeat The Undertaker for the WWE Championship. However, the event is best known for being the night when ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin suffered a career-altering broken neck at the hands of a botched Owen Hart Tombstone Piledriver. Austin managed to finish the match, of a fashion, and win the Intercontinental title4th August1997:On the 100th episode of Monday Nitro, Lex Luger defeated ‘Hollywood’ Hulk Hogan to win the WCW World Heavyweight Title and end the NWO leader’s near year-long reign. Luger’s run with the title would not last long. He dropped it back to Hogan five days later at the WCW Road Wild PPV. It was the second, and final, world title reign for The Total Package.5th August2011:WWE conducted one of the biggest one day talent purges in their history when they released a raft of talent including Melina, Harry Smith, Chris Masters and Vladimir Kozlov.6th August1993:On a house show in Sheffield, England, Hulk Hogan defeats WWF Champion Yokozuna by disqualification.
