Construction has been notoriously known for being a male-dominated industry with fewer opportunities for women and minorities to thrive. However, that is all changing as minority-owned construction businesses continue to emerge and gain a presence in the market, and larger companies are recognizing the value in diversity and inclusion.
Jennifer Todd is the perfect example of this. The youngest Black woman to receive California’s CSLB (A) General Engineering license, she serves as LMS General Contractors founder and president. She heads the company’s management team and is responsible for developing and executing LMS’s strategic growth.

This week Steve talked with Russ Bartholomew, president of CORE Safety Group. Russ discussed the risky business of construction —not just from a business perspective but also from the safety side.
Most companies recognize that construction is risky, and have robust safety programs along with staff to ensure their employees and jobsites are free from accidents.
However, as companies scale up and down or as they look to improve their safety programs—they need to tap into the right expertise to ensure that they are technologically equipped, appropriately staffed, and adequately trained to protect the health and safety of their employees and their bottom lines.

The construction industry shares some similar characteristics with manufacturing, such as utilizing labor, equipment, and technology to transform raw materials into a finished product. However, with construction, that finished product is completely unique every single time. Even if a building is being constructed twice with the same exact blueprint--dynamic site conditions, changing weather patterns, revolving teams, and interchanging subcontractors combined with thousands of moving pieces and parts, make every single project different, complex, and challenging. Imagine as a contractor the pressure to perform and to mitigate risk--all the while operating with razor thin margins.
This is what Michael Ho and his partners realized and led them to start Bespoke Metrics, a data management and analytics company that helps construction companies reduce the time-consuming process of collecting information and qualifying contractors. Prior to starting his company, Michael spent 15 years working at a global credit ratings business with responsibilities over corporate credit, infrastructure finance, and banking.
