People keep telling Dr. Brian Ragsdale, "I don't know how you do it." In this episode, he takes that sentence apart: the compliment on the surface, the lowered expectation underneath it, and what psychology says about the "exception" we make instead of changing the picture. Then he gives the honest answer about how a long-standing psychologist, artist, and teacher actually gets things done. Ordinary tools. Forty years. No magic.

What happens when health care starts to look like a factory assembly line? In the first episode of this six-part series, Dr. Brian Ragsdale opens by introducing himself and why it matters: a Black gay psychologist with over twenty years in the field, and poses the question at the heart of it all. Are our tools helping clinicians think harder, listen better, and serve people more fairly, or are they helping organizations push more volume, shorten turnaround, and turn care into a scalable product? Those are not the same thing. Next episode: the machine has a manager.

  • The Tax of Being the Strong One

    Send us Fan Mail

What has “being strong” cost you?

For many Black people, strength is more than a personal quality. It is a cultural expectation: hold the family together, keep going, remain dependable, and do not let anyone see you break. That strength is real—but it can also carry a psychological and physical cost.

In this episode of Transforming Minds, Dr. Brian L. Ragsdale examines the difference between the strength we choose and the endurance demanded of us. Drawing on the concepts of John Henryism and weathering, he explores how high-effort coping and chronic exposure to adversity can affect the body, complicate our relationship with rest, and teach us to confuse usefulness with worth.

The question for this episode is simple: Who benefits from your strength—and are you one of those people?

Transforming Minds offers one question, one idea, and a different way of thinking about psychology and the systems shaping our lives.

Transforming Minds with Dr. Brian Ragsdale examines psychology, culture, identity, and power in concise, research-informed episodes. Dr. Ragsdale is a licensed clinical psychologist, educator, researcher, and consultant with more than 25 years of experience. Each episode asks one question, develops one central idea, and challenges listeners to think differently about mental health and the systems shaping our lives.

    Send us Fan Mail

The Gatekeepers of Sanity, Episode 4: The Psychological Tax of Code-Switching

What does it cost to constantly calculate which version of yourself is safe to show?

Code-switching originally referred to moving between languages or dialects. Today, the term is also used to describe changing how we speak, behave, dress, or present ourselves depending on the environment. Although nearly everyone adjusts their behavior across settings, code-switching becomes psychologically more complicated when that adaptation is shaped by power.

For Black professionals, code-switching may involve monitoring speech, hairstyle, emotional expression, or whether assertiveness will be interpreted as competence or aggression. For LGBTQ+ people, it may involve deciding whether to mention a partner, correct an assumption, or disclose part of one’s identity. These decisions are not necessarily signs of insecurity. They may reflect an accurate assessment of an environment in which being perceived incorrectly carries professional, interpersonal, or psychological consequences.

In this episode of Transforming Minds, Dr. Brian Ragsdale examines the cognitive and emotional labor involved in continually monitoring how other people might interpret us. Code-switching can reduce conflict, create opportunities, and help people navigate institutions successfully. But it can also require some individuals to expend considerably more psychological energy than others simply to receive the same presumption of competence, professionalism, or safety.

This complicates common advice about authenticity. Authenticity does not occur in a social vacuum. People make decisions about self-presentation inside environments that reward some identities and forms of expression more readily than others.

Meaningful inclusion therefore requires more than allowing different people to enter an institution. It requires examining what they are expected to change once they arrive. Sometimes the gatekeeper does not explicitly deny entry. Instead, the message is: You may enter, but you must change before we become comfortable with you.

When that message is repeated often enough, people may begin policing themselves before anyone else has to. The deepest psychological cost of code-switching may emerge when the gatekeeper no longer needs to be in the room.

Transforming Minds with Dr. Brian Ragsdale offers brief explorations of psychology, identity, culture, and the systems shaping our lives. Each episode is under ten minutes and focuses on one question, one idea, and a different way of thinking.

  • Who Decides What Counts as Psychological Knowledge?

    Send us Fan Mail

Who Decides What Counts as Psychological Knowledge?

Psychology is a science. But science does not begin with data. It begins with decisions.

Someone decides which questions are worth asking, which populations are studied, which measures are considered valid, which research receives funding, and which findings eventually become part of the psychological canon.

In Episode 3 of The Gatekeepers of Sanity, Dr. Brian Ragsdale asks a deceptively simple question: Who gets to decide what counts as psychological knowledge?

Psychology has developed increasingly sophisticated methods for studying human behavior. Yet the people and populations historically represented in psychological research have not always reflected the diversity of the people to whom psychological theories, assessments, and interventions are eventually applied.

That creates an important scientific question.

What happens when research conducted with particular populations is treated as knowledge about human beings generally, while research centered on Black communities, LGBTQ+ communities, and other historically marginalized populations is categorized as specialized or population-specific?

    The distinction matters.

One population can quietly become the standard. Everyone else becomes a variation from that standard.

This episode examines how gatekeeping operates throughout the production of psychological knowledge, from the questions researchers choose to investigate to the assumptions embedded in psychological measurement and the institutional processes that determine what research receives attention.

Dr. Ragsdale also challenges a common misunderstanding about representation in science. Representation is not simply about demographic diversity. Different lived experiences can lead researchers to notice different psychological phenomena, challenge assumptions that others take for granted, and ask questions that might otherwise never enter the scientific literature.

That does not mean lived experience replaces scientific evidence.

It means lived experience can influence what we recognize as worthy of scientific investigation.

Questioning these processes is not a rejection of psychological science. It is part of making psychological science stronger.

And before something becomes accepted psychological knowledge, somebody has decided that it belongs.

Transforming Minds delivers one question, one idea, and a different way of thinking about psychology and the systems shaping our lives, all in under 10 minutes.

    Send us Fan Mail

What happens when psychology focuses on the person experiencing distress but pays less attention to the systems producing it?

In the first episode of Season 4, The Gatekeepers of Sanity, Dr. Brian Ragsdale examines psychology’s tendency to locate problems within individuals while treating workplaces, institutions, culture, and systems of power as background conditions. He asks a deceptively simple question: Are we helping people become healthier, or simply helping them adapt to unhealthy environments?
