  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #331) - Woodstock, Porchrokr, & More - August 16, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
Boy Oh Boy! There's nothing like celebrating great 'live' events so I've pulled out all the stops on today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #331) to do just that. This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival AND the umpteenth time my local Akron 'Highland Square' neighborhood brings over 100 performers to their yearly 'Porchrokr' festival so I'll focus on both celebrations by playing plenty of great music found at each.

Porchrokr is held on Saturday, August 17th beginning at 10:30 a.m. so I'll play music from local acts appearing there including THE HI-FI'S, THE BEYONDERERS, and FANCY LEGS. Accompanying FANCY LEGS during their set will be former TIN HUEY band mates CHRIS BUTLER & HARVEY GOLD and rumor has it several 'Huey' classics will be played so I’ll start the show today with one of those classics. (I guess you’ll just have to tune in and find out which song it is).

Before commemorating the Woodstock festival in the final hour there's plenty of other great music in store including NEW selections from the latest PERE UBU, AFRICA EXPRESS (featuring Damon Albarn), RAMIN DJAWADI, JESCA HOOP, and FLYING LOTUS.

I've got several quirky cuts out of the 'vault' from CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, JAMES WHITE & THE BLACKS, and CHI-PIG all combined in one segment, while ROBBIE ROBERTSON, JIM PEPPER, BRIAN ENO & DAVID BYRNE, RY COODER, and STEVE EARLE all are played in another that honors our history as a land 'of' immigrants; regardless of religion, color, or language. VIOLENT FEMMES does an amazing rendition of 'God Bless America' during that set as well.

The Woodstock set during the final hour features numerous cuts from the just issued '50th Anniversary Back To The Garden' album including several never before released pieces from CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, JANIS JOPLIN, and JEFFERSON AIRPLANE.

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #330) - August 9, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
Sometimes it seems everything just falls into place and that's exactly what happened this week while preparing the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #330). Beginning with the latest offering from JESCA HOOP, what followed during the first set just fit perfectly; THE ROCHES, then DEAN & BRITTA interpreting an Andy Warhol screen test, DENGUE FEVER'S outstanding piece that followed, then an a cappella version of “Tomorrow Never Knows' (by FIVE O'CLOCK SHADOW), PETER GABRIEL crooning into an ANGELO BADALAMENTI 'Barbershop' melody, before finishing with ALLEN RAVENSTINE'S composition 'If Only There Was More Time.' Yet it only gets better!

By the time the final hour arrives you'll get two 'themed' sets; one which surrounds bits of dialogue about zombies from Jim Jarmusch's 'The Dead Don't Die' and the other with an extra terrestrial motif. The former (zombies) features movie dialogue with synth's and such from CHICK COREA, FLYING LOTUS, and SQURL as wells a BRYAN FERRY 'All Tomorrow's Parties' cover, cuts from MODEST MOUSE and BEACON STREET UNION, before finishing with RICKIE LEE JONES doing 'Road Kill.'

It all comes to a head with THE BEYONDERERS from their new release, 'Disclosure,' leading off a final set that includes HAWKWIND playing 'Space Is Deep,' a PETER BAUMANN (Tangerine Dream) selection followed by MARK SNOW'S 'The X Files Theme' and LEONARD NIMOY'S 'Highly Illogical' before finishing up with themes from JOHNNY QUEST and THE JETSON'S. • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #328) - July 26, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
Last week the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing so this week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #328), I'll play a selection of songs about the moon and outer space from NICK DRAKE, THE B-52's, GONG, KEN NORDINE, THE DOORS, THE ENID, DUKE ELLINGTON, SOPWITH CAMEL, and SPIRIT all during the fourth set. • Transmusic Airwaves presents Vicotin Popsicles from July 13, 2012 with Paul Ciminero (host) - July 12, 2019
Welcome to another Transmusic Airwaves 'Presents' as I delve into the recent past this week and rebroadcast a program from July 13, 2012 under the title of my original radio program, Vicotin Popsicles over KUSF-in-Exile, a San Francisco internet radio station. KUSF-in-Exile arose from the ashes of legendary alternative radio station KUSF, whose frequency was sold to an LA based classical consortium. I began programming a freeform radio show with the internet based former DJ's of KUSF in late April 2012 and called my show 'Vicotin Popsicles.'

Today's rebroadcast is Episode #12 from July 13, 2012 and clocked in at around two hours. At the time my programs were still a work in progress and as I was getting more comfortable each week with each shows evolution. During this period I was relying on 'themed' sets and movie and TV dialogue intermixed into the flow of the show, My program was scheduled to air from 6 to 8 am every Friday on the station and beginning in August 2012 the program director had me add an additional hour to the length.

Below is the synopsis of this week's installment with a track listing of each set and the songs played:

Two themed sets today!!! The first "alcohol, features a vault find from Kevin Ayers, plus spoken word bizarre-ness from I'm Not Jim, and much more goodies then, the second themed set, "Airplanes," features Laurie Anderson, Wilco with Billy Bragg, and both have loads of movie dialogue throughout. • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #325) - June 28, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
It's always good to take a week off now and then to rest, relax, and rejuvenate the mind and as a result, last week's hiatus now gives way this week to another 'new' TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #325).

The program takes off right from the start with three blues legends, ALBERT COLLINS, JOHNNY COPELAND, and ROBERT CRAY getting the gears moving with a cut from their 'Showdown' album, followed by Akron fav's THE HI-FI'S new song, 'Bad News,' before winding it's way sonically with songs from SUPERSISTER, GONG, and TUXEDOMOON towards ENNIO MORRICONE'S theme from 'A Fistful Of Dollars' and another new gem from THE BUDOS BAND.

If you loved that first set (and I think you will) then you can look forward to more great sets that all flow in their own unique way from start to finish. During the second set, the BUTTHOLE SURFERS, Algerian 'Rai' singer RIMITTI (with Robert Fripp, Flea, and East Bay Ray backing her up), VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, Pere Ubu's ALLEN RAVENSTINE, THE ART BEARS, and RHIANNON GIDDENS all are blended together.

Plus there's NEW releases from FLYING LOTUS, ESPERANZA SPAULDING, JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE, and MAVIS STAPLES, 'vault' selections from HELP YOURSELF, TIR NA NOG, HUMAN SWITCHBOARD, EGG, and GRACE JONES; and TOMITA & ELP'S interpretation of 'Promenade' from their respective 'Pictures At An Exhibition' releases. The show was a whole lot of fun to make so tune in and enjoy it yourself!

  • Transmusic Airwaves presents FRESH AIR Progressive Radio on WKSU-FM from January 11, 1978 with Paul Ciminero (host) - June 21, 2019
On this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES, I've decided to step away from producing a new program, and in it's place, air one of my early broadcasting tapes from January 11, 1978 as a host of the legendary progressive music program FRESH AIR on WKSU-FM 89.7 FM at Kent State University. Beginning in the fall of 1976 through the summer of 1981, I was a DJ on FRESH AIR as well as hosting and producing numerous jazz and folk programs.

This tape comes from an archive of FRESH AIR shows gathered from former DJ's, listeners, and friends who recorded the show as it aired over the radio on their cassette decks or reel to reel players and were eventually gathered, transferred, and digitally remastered into an archive with over 500 hours of programming on it.

This recording was made on Wednesday morning, January 11, 1978 as Fresh Air was being broadcast from midnight until 3 a.m. at the time. The program begins at approximately 12:40 a.m. and runs well past the 3 a.m. normal sign off time. It begins with the band CARAVAN'S latest import release, 'Better By Far,' and the song 'Nightmare,' and contains other stalwarts that we were playing at the time including PHIL MANZANERA/801, BRAND X, BRUCE COCKBURN, JOHN MARTYN, VANGELIS, EBERHARD WEBER, and DAEVID ALLEN.

KEVIN AYERS' entire song, 'The Confession Of Dr. Dream' (coming in at 18:51 in length) is played during the 2 a.m. 'space set' as well. There's even an appearance by the Humpback Whale Album, 'DEEP VOICES,' that I conveniently used as a background while announcing a set that segued into JOHN HARTFORD singing 'Dancing In The Bathtub.' The program finishes with the WKSU-FM sign off cart, containing the APHRODITE’S CHILD song 'Break,' and the technical spec's of WKSU'S licensing. I hope you enjoy the show.
