Transmusic Airwaves

Greetings to all my friends, listeners, and those just about to discover this freeform radio program for the very first time. Welcome to a brand new decade and the latest edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #351), as I begin another year in many ways where I left off, adding more new selections to the eclectic mix of musical styles, 'vault' picks, and comedy in what you've come to expect from this program.

I'll begin today's show with the latest from THE MEKONS, play a notable cut from the band CRACKER, and then finish the first set with more of my 'Best Of 2019' choices from SAD PLANETS, LOW, NAREN BUDHKAR & THE HEVREH ENSEMBLE, GLEN HANSARD, and DEVENDRE BANHART. Other 'Best of 2019' picks added to this show include artists BRUCE COCKBURN, THE TUFTED PUFFINS, JON BATISTE, and the EAST RIVER STRING BAND.

Later on you'll hear brand new tracks by NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS, ETHNIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE, and indie bands BIG THIEF and PAPER BEAT SCISSORS. From the 'vault' I've got THE ELECTRIC PRUNES, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, TUXEDOMOON, and DAEVID ALLEN and an array of more recent cuts from YO LA TENGO, BUCKETHEAD, JOSEPH ARTHUR, and PETER GABRIEL (with a full orchestra doing 'Digging In The Dirt').

I'll finish the program with several pieces written by legendary song writer & comedian NEIL INNES, (BONZO DOG BAND, THE RUTLES) who sadly passed away last week.

It's hard to believe how much faster time races by as I get older. Another year is drawing to a close and as I prepare this year's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #350), I can only hope for better days ahead. Today's program is my 'Best Of 2019' special, and it marks the eighth time I've looked back at my favorite releases over twelve months.

You can expect a variety of eclectic selections that really resonated with me again this year. There's plenty of music from Ohio bred artists including PERE UBU, THE HI-FI'S, FANCY LEGS, THE BLACK KEYS, CHRISSIE HYNDE (with the VALVE BONE WOE ENSEMBLE), DETENTION, THE BEYONERERS, GUIDED BY VOICES, and the late PETER LAUGHNER.

Internationally I was blown away by Congo's KOKOKO!, Mali's TINARIWEN and BASSEKOU KOUYATE & NGONI BA, Netherlands ALTIN GUN, Estonia's MARI KALKUN, as well as ANGLEIQUE KIDJO and the collective of musicians comprising the AFRICA SPEAKS project.

Profound musical statements were offered from IGGY POP, VIOLENT FEMMES, SWANS, PIXIES, OH SEES, JESCA HOOP, NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE, RHIANNON GIDDENS (with FRANCESCO TURRISI), and WILCO. In fact, there was so much extraordinary music released this year, I will likely have to use more time in the show that will follow this one to get to it all.

'Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house, I was scrambling for ideas so my holiday show wouldn't louse, when suddenly inspiration came in a great wave, with the help of much coffee and the ideas that it gave. So the show slowly assembled as the days quickly passed, and by the very last minute I had completed the task. I present to you now, with a multitude of luck, the 8th annual TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#349) Holiday Special, in hopes it won't suck.'

The festivities get started with a brand new holiday song from THE HI-FI'S, 'Christmastime Is Coming Around Again' followed shortly thereafter by THE BEATLES 1969 Christmas Fan Club Message, then original compositions from BRAVE COMBO, TAJ MAHAL & THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA, SHARON JONES & THE DAP KINGS, and THE VENTURES doing their song 'Scrooge.'

The second set contains several unusual versions of 'Jingle Bells,' including BELA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES with the Tuvan throat singing ALGASH ENSEMBLE, a klezmer inspired rendition from THE KLEZMONAUTS, DUKE ELLINGTON (remixed), and a straight ahead jazz version from FRANK VIGNOLA'S QUINTET. For your added enjoyment, there's a spoken word meets beat poetry piece intermixed with those versions called 'Be Bop Santa Claus' by the BLUE NOTE AD HOC ORCHESTRA to add some levity to the mix.

By the fifth set it's time for this year's main course, an eclectic mix of music from PERE UBU ('Winter In The Firelands'), MARS WILLIAMS (channeling Albert Ayler while riffing 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'), RALPH CARNEY (his 'Happy Solstice Song'), HOUSE OF WIRES, DANNY ELFMAN, and the always apropos 'Christmas Wrapping' by THE WAITRESSES, all surrounding four distinctively different versions of THE RESIDENTS 'Santa Dog' (from 1972, 78, 84, and 88).

Put on your ugliest holiday sweater, grab an eggnog, and steal a handful of those still warm, just baked cookies you've been told to keep your paws off of, and get listening!

JOHN COLTRANE ( from newly released 1964 sessions), THE BAD PLUS, JULIAN LAGE, FIDEL FOURNEYRON, KEN NORDINE, and VASSAR CLEMENTS (with Dave Holland & John Abercrombie). Some of you might suspect I've gone a bit overboard with all the jazz I'm playing as part of today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #348) while others are perfectly excited about my choices this week. That's why doing this show is so much fun to make. In the end they'll all get blended into sets surrounded by other musical genres anyway, and the hope, as usual, is that you'll really enjoy the show' flow.

Those 'other' genres this week? Folk from TOM RUSH and BRUCE COCKBURN, 'Prog' from VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, KING CRIMSON (a cut from their new 'live' album), and NICO, Indie artists PIXIES, KIM GORDON, and WILCO, World music from KOKOKO!, MARI BOINE (with LIU SOLA), and Madagascar's GAMANA, and numerous new efforts from SWANS, DANIEL LANOIS, BECK, and SASAMI. You'll even get to 'rock out' with new reissues from THE DOORS and THE NAZZ too!

All the ingredients you need for a great bowl of musical soup starts Friday, December 13th.

On today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #347) there's a whole lot of variety going on. From the jazz styling's of DON PULLEN and MAX ROACH, to the new wavey sounds of early TALKING HEADS and WIRE, or the blending of both of those genres with SWOLLEN MONKEYS and JAMES WHITE & THE BLACKS, it's a cornucopia of music that will continue to delight your ears.

I've got plenty of 'just added' NEW releases in this week's mix including the latest from KIM GORDON, NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE, BECK, ANGEL OLSEN, and even a song from KING CRIMSON'S 'Audio Diary, 2014-2018' album. Internationally there's plenty to dance around to as well. SAMITE (from Uganda) plays thumb piano, KOKOKO! (Congo) continues their African psychedelic odyssey, ANGELIQUE KIDJO (Benin) belts out another classic from her 'Celia' release, and JUANA MOLINA (Argentina) bends notes in her own uniquely strange way.

For those of you hoping for more interesting tidbits from deep inside the 'vault,' there's an early synthesizer track from MORT GARSON, two cuts from THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION'S always popular 'We're Only In It For The Money,' DAEVID ALLEN, THE SHADOWS, and PETER GABRIEL sings 'Games Without Frontiers' in German. Oh, and did I fail to mention I'll be playing another one of N. E. Ohio's 70's radio anthem's: 'El Doomo' by the band ELLIS from their 'Riding On the Crest Of A Slump' album.

It's that time again. Another week has flown by and lo and behold, here we are with a brand new TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #346). The set flow this week, to quote Ferris Buehler, 'is absolutely sublime.' 'Choice.'

Getting everything started is HUKWE ZAWOSE & MICHAEL BROOK with a piece from their 'Assembly' album followed by a cut from the 'PASSENGERS' project (i.e. Eno & U2), and later a new collaboration from DANIEL LANOIS & RHIANNON GIDDENS (for a video game soundtrack no less), then another new DEVENDRA BANHART melody before finishing with OSAMU KITAJIMA (with MINNIE RIPERTON).

There's an ALICE COOPER staple ('Halo Of Flies') to start the second set, then among other items IVOR CUTLER muses about a 'Wooden Tree,' WILCO laments about a wooden cross, and FRANK ZAPPA, SPARKS, ALTIN GUN, and LITTLE FEAT all keep the vibe going.

By the fourth set there's plenty of surprises including another great piece from Africa's progressive KOKOKO!, followed by TOM WAITS, the BUTTHOLE SURFERS, and OSIBISA, all leading up to the irreverent poetic slam of WAS (NOT WAS)'s 'Earth To Doris' and SPIKE JONE'S 'My Old Flame.'

Still tripping from the tryptophan high from the past few days? There's other great songs from URBAN VERBS, YOCHK'O SEFFER, BRAND X, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (JOE BYRD), TALVIN SINGH, and GEORGE HARRISON'S 'Wonderwall Music' to ease you down from that cloud. Tune in and enjoy the music!

With less than a week to go, this year's preparation for Thanksgiving has reached a frenzied pace where ever I seem to go. Stores are bustling, people are moving faster in their step, and driver's are even less aware of their surroundings so I've approached this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #345) with a relax, 'enjoy the moment a little bit more' vibe to it.

Yeah, there's a couple of songs in the first set that can relate to the festivities like ALBERT COLLIN'S 'Don't Go Reaching Across My Plate' (starting things off), CRACKER (with LEFTOVER SALMON) doing 'Sweet Potato,' and RALPH CARNEY'S 'Turkey Neck,' but all in all, it's still really about great sets of music flowing from one point to the next.

During the second set you'll hear TUNE-YARDS, another new cut from ALTIN GUN, and a sonic melody from LAIKA, all blended in with the BONZO DOG BAND, KOKOKO!, ONE ESKIMO, and vintage DAVID BOWIE.

There's a rarely heard PINK FLOYD track ('Crumbling Land') from the Zabriskie Point soundtrack to start off the fourth set, and during the fifth, CHRISSIE HYNDE leads the way with her latest, followed by COCHEMEA GASTELUM, then's songs for and about 'sirens' and 'toads' with references to a scene from 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou' and music from BRAVE COMBO, ALISON KRAUSS (with GILLIAN WELCH and EMMYLOU HARRIS), and who else...M. FROG LABAT. I expect quite a bit of laughter and glee as you listen to that segment unfold.

There's also new songs from DEVENDRA BANHART, RUSSIAN CIRCLES, WILCO, and DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE sprinkled throughout with more 'vault' gems from PETER HAMMILL, BE BOP DELUXE, and Italy's LE ORME. Relax...listen...and have that second piece of pie!

Grey skies, blustery wind and snow, slick roads, and bone chilling temperatures signified an early start to winter this past week but it allowed me to stay indoors and concentrate on the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #344). The result is a very satisfying program from start to finish.

I decided to get things going with a couple of 'surf' guitar pieces beginning with DICK DALE and THE BEYONDERERS, then a jazzy little ditty from JULIAN LAGE, some vintage CAN, a new piece from DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, then a recent GONG cut which leads into a seamless transition with ULTIMATE SPINACH, before concluding the set with the psychedelic Congolese band KOKOKO!

Starting the second set I've got TELEVISION from their 'Marquee Moon' album followed by NEGATIVLAND, KEN NORDINE, the dreamy electronics of DIMITRI FROM PARIS, and another new interpretation of a jazz standard by CHRISSIE HYNDE & THE VALVE BONE WOE ENSEMBLE. Throw in some JAN & DEAN, THE BEATLES (newly remastered Abbey Road), and another great instrumental from BRUCE COCKBURN'S latest, and I've just described the first hour to you.

Expect more sets just like that to follow featuring 'vault' music from THE PENTANGLE, JEAN-LUC PONTY, MCDONALD AND GILES, and KEVIN AYERS, more new songs from ROBBIE ROBERTSON, WILCO, and EAST RIVER STRING BAND, and additional international selections from ALTIN GUN, MIDOU MOCTAR, and Thailand's MIKE PIROMPORN. I've been dealing with plenty of distractions around here lately so for me producing a new TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES is the perfect way to refocus my energies. Music does that for me. This week I've got Episode #343 ready for you to enjoy, and just maybe it'll give you some renewed vigor as well.

There's a new WILCO track to start things off, some vintage ROLLING STONES ('Lady Jane'), PETER HAMMILL'S take on the power of words, a favorite TIN HUEY cut of mine that pays homage to what follows it, ROBERT WYATT, and some New York City 'Gypsy Punk' ala LUMINESCENT ORCHESTRII to wrap the first segment up. The clues of what you'll be hearing are right in front of you.

Next up there's DEVO and JADE WARRIOR (both from their second albums), then the PIXIES (new), THE PEANUT BUTTER CONSPIRACY (old), OH SEES, BELLE & SEBASTIAN, BRUCE COCKBURN, (all new), and everyone's favorite, XTC. You could say I'm assembling the pieces from my musical puzzle box as the picture in your ears starts to emerge. Or you could say cut the metaphor crap and tell us what else you're going to play.

From the new arrivals bin there's Africa's KOKOKO, KEITH JARRETT interpreting J.S. Bach, and more from ALPHA CAT, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, ROBBIE ROBERTSON, CHRISSIE HYNDE & THE VALVE BONE WOE ENSEMBLE, and VIOLENT FEMMES. Vault offerings include BO HANSSON, NATIONAL HEALTH, GODLEY & CREME and THE DOORS blended in with new remasters from THE BEATLES and STEREOLAB, plus jazz tracks from BILL FRISELL and MEDESKI, MARTIN, & WOOD.

Just like the disclaimer on that puzzle box, this show is recommended for 'all ages.'
