'Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house, I was scrambling for ideas so my holiday show wouldn't louse, when suddenly inspiration came in a great wave, with the help of much coffee and the ideas that it gave. So the show slowly assembled as the days quickly passed, and by the very last minute I had completed the task. I present to you now, with a multitude of luck, the 8th annual TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#349) Holiday Special, in hopes it won't suck.'

The festivities get started with a brand new holiday song from THE HI-FI'S, 'Christmastime Is Coming Around Again' followed shortly thereafter by THE BEATLES 1969 Christmas Fan Club Message, then original compositions from BRAVE COMBO, TAJ MAHAL & THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA, SHARON JONES & THE DAP KINGS, and THE VENTURES doing their song 'Scrooge.'

The second set contains several unusual versions of 'Jingle Bells,' including BELA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES with the Tuvan throat singing ALGASH ENSEMBLE, a klezmer inspired rendition from THE KLEZMONAUTS, DUKE ELLINGTON (remixed), and a straight ahead jazz version from FRANK VIGNOLA'S QUINTET. For your added enjoyment, there's a spoken word meets beat poetry piece intermixed with those versions called 'Be Bop Santa Claus' by the BLUE NOTE AD HOC ORCHESTRA to add some levity to the mix.

By the fifth set it's time for this year's main course, an eclectic mix of music from PERE UBU ('Winter In The Firelands'), MARS WILLIAMS (channeling Albert Ayler while riffing 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'), RALPH CARNEY (his 'Happy Solstice Song'), HOUSE OF WIRES, DANNY ELFMAN, and the always apropos 'Christmas Wrapping' by THE WAITRESSES, all surrounding four distinctively different versions of THE RESIDENTS 'Santa Dog' (from 1972, 78, 84, and 88).

Put on your ugliest holiday sweater, grab an eggnog, and steal a handful of those still warm, just baked cookies you've been told to keep your paws off of, and get listening!

On today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #347) there's a whole lot of variety going on. From the jazz styling's of DON PULLEN and MAX ROACH, to the new wavey sounds of early TALKING HEADS and WIRE, or the blending of both of those genres with SWOLLEN MONKEYS and JAMES WHITE & THE BLACKS, it's a cornucopia of music that will continue to delight your ears.

I've got plenty of 'just added' NEW releases in this week's mix including the latest from KIM GORDON, NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE, BECK, ANGEL OLSEN, and even a song from KING CRIMSON'S 'Audio Diary, 2014-2018' album. Internationally there's plenty to dance around to as well. SAMITE (from Uganda) plays thumb piano, KOKOKO! (Congo) continues their African psychedelic odyssey, ANGELIQUE KIDJO (Benin) belts out another classic from her 'Celia' release, and JUANA MOLINA (Argentina) bends notes in her own uniquely strange way.

It's that time again. Another week has flown by and lo and behold, here we are with a brand new TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #346). The set flow this week, to quote Ferris Buehler, 'is absolutely sublime.' 'Choice.'

Getting everything started is HUKWE ZAWOSE & MICHAEL BROOK with a piece from their 'Assembly' album followed by a cut from the 'PASSENGERS' project (i.e. Eno & U2), and later a new collaboration from DANIEL LANOIS & RHIANNON GIDDENS (for a video game soundtrack no less), then another new DEVENDRA BANHART melody before finishing with OSAMU KITAJIMA (with MINNIE RIPERTON).

There's an ALICE COOPER staple ('Halo Of Flies') to start the second set, then among other items IVOR CUTLER muses about a 'Wooden Tree,' WILCO laments about a wooden cross, and FRANK ZAPPA, SPARKS, ALTIN GUN, and LITTLE FEAT all keep the vibe going.

By the fourth set there's plenty of surprises including another great piece from Africa's progressive KOKOKO!, followed by TOM WAITS, the BUTTHOLE SURFERS, and OSIBISA, all leading up to the irreverent poetic slam of WAS (NOT WAS)'s 'Earth To Doris' and SPIKE JONE'S 'My Old Flame.'

With less than a week to go, this year's preparation for Thanksgiving has reached a frenzied pace where ever I seem to go. Stores are bustling, people are moving faster in their step, and driver's are even less aware of their surroundings so I've approached this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #345) with a relax, 'enjoy the moment a little bit more' vibe to it.

Yeah, there's a couple of songs in the first set that can relate to the festivities like ALBERT COLLIN'S 'Don't Go Reaching Across My Plate' (starting things off), CRACKER (with LEFTOVER SALMON) doing 'Sweet Potato,' and RALPH CARNEY'S 'Turkey Neck,' but all in all, it's still really about great sets of music flowing from one point to the next.

Grey skies, blustery wind and snow, slick roads, and bone chilling temperatures signified an early start to winter this past week but it allowed me to stay indoors and concentrate on the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #344). The result is a very satisfying program from start to finish.

I decided to get things going with a couple of 'surf' guitar pieces beginning with DICK DALE and THE BEYONDERERS, then a jazzy little ditty from JULIAN LAGE, some vintage CAN, a new piece from DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, then a recent GONG cut which leads into a seamless transition with ULTIMATE SPINACH, before concluding the set with the psychedelic Congolese band KOKOKO!

Starting the second set I've got TELEVISION from their 'Marquee Moon' album followed by NEGATIVLAND, KEN NORDINE, the dreamy electronics of DIMITRI FROM PARIS, and another new interpretation of a jazz standard by CHRISSIE HYNDE & THE VALVE BONE WOE ENSEMBLE. Throw in some JAN & DEAN, THE BEATLES (newly remastered Abbey Road), and another great instrumental from BRUCE COCKBURN'S latest, and I've just described the first hour to you.

Witches, Zombies, Knives, Axes, and Nightmares all can only mean one thing...it's time for the 8th annual 'Halloween Special' on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #341). This year those themes have been incorporated into six sets and blended together with plenty of NEW releases, 'vault' (or more specifically 'crypt') nuggets, movie dialogue from Jim Jarmusch's zombie apocalypse movie 'The Dead Don't Die,' and bad horror movie trailers all used to reanimate and bring to life another pointed Halloween spectacular.

From the opening theme to 'Dark Shadows' and subsequent musical pieces surrounding DANNY ELFMAN'S 'This Is Halloween' melody (interpreted by PANIC! AT THE DISCO) the first set gets it's knives out with THE FACEDANCERS 'Nightmare,' AMANDA PALMER'S 'Machete,' and OCS'S 'Memory of a Cut Off Head' before finishing with DETENTION'S cover of The Beatles 'Helter Skelter.'

Songs about witches grace the second set that gets started with the PIXIES 'On Graveyard Hill' then explores the evolution of witches with LOUISE HUBNER'S 'Seduction Through Witchcraft,' GILLI SMYTH'S 'I Am A Witch,' and additional songs along those lines from THE SONICS and THE MOVING SIDEWALKS. A spell is added before PINK FLOYD and THOM YORKE both lament about various methods of 'axe' handling.

What follows is music and dialogue from Jim Jarmusch's “The Dead Don't Die,' with additional new music from PERE UBU, GALACTIC, ALLEN RAVENSTINE, and WILCO mixed in throughout. More new cuts are dispersed within the remains of the show and include music from RHIANNON GIDDENS, ROBBIE ROBERTSON, BRUCE COCKBURN, and yes of course, VAMPIRE WEEKEND! Add in the poetry of DYLAN THOMAS, LOU REED'S 'The Bells,' AUDIENCE'S original version of 'House On The Hill,' THE CRAMPS 'I Was A Teenage Werewolf,' and 'Time Warp' from THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and unlike what's left of your limbs, this show is not to be missed!
