  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #369) - May 15, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
It's time for another broadcast of my freeform radio show TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #369) and you're all probably wondering how I'll attempt to reinvent the wheel this week so here's an insight into how I planned today's show.

After several days of compiling dozens of musical tracks into a numbered program folder, I started to organize them according to either a specific sound or set theme. I knew I'd play music from LITTLE RICHARD and Florian Schneider (KRAFTWERK) to honor their legacy and having just watched the PBS special on MILES DAVIS I was struck by how he came to use Indian instruments in his recordings in the early 1970's so all of those factors had a bearing on what would become part of this show.

I decided to start the show off with DEVO doing 'Social Fools' as a tongue in cheek swipe at protesters demanding states to reopen, then I listened to other artists and picked out a song sequence that had ARIEL PINK, OUTRONAUT, THE ART BEARS, KLEPTOKRAT, LENE LOVICH, and TIN HUEY all moving seamlessly from one cut to the next to finish that first set.

KRAFTWERK (playing 'Trans Europe Express') and LITTLE RICHARD'S rendition of 'Good Golly Miss Molly' would anchor the third set and covers by SENOR COCONUT ('Autobahn') and THE FLYING LIZARDS ('Tutti Fruiti') would augment each of those cuts allowing everything to flow nicely into SYD BARRETT's'Gigolo Aunt' and the German Bierhaus band FSK.

Later on, you'll hear MILES DAVIS play 'Black Satin' from On The Corner, then I'll blend NUSRAT FATAH ALI KHAN, ETRAN FINATAWA, and PENTANGLE (all fitting stylistically together) in another series of segues that will conclude with BRYAN SCARY and CARAVAN.

I had so much fun assembling this show that by the time I got to the final set, inspiration abounded and the show ended up a little longer than usual as a result. How can you play CAPTAIN BEEFHEART ('Diddy Wah Diddy'), TOM TOM CLUB ('Under The Boardwalk') BUSTER POINDEXTER ('Castles In Spain') and XAVIER CUGAT ('Brazil') and not be happy?

    Today's playlist:

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #368) - May 8, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
Each week I try to make my radio broadcast different from the previous one and unique in it's own way. This week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #368) has bits of stories interwoven into the songs in several cases and that coupled with my usual way of blending pieces together makes for another 'unconventional' program.

I'll take the BRYAN SCARY song 'Universal Crane' and merge it into FAUST'S 'Giggy Smile' during the first set (the similarities are uncanny) and follow it with the JOSEPH ARTHUR melody 'Midwest.' As the second set develops, I'll play THE MOTHER OF INVENTION'S 'Duke of Prunes' medley and connect it into DEVOTCHKA'S 'Curse You Little Heart' and THE DANDY WARHOL'S song 'Whipping Tree' in another great series of segues.

During today's third set several stories merge beginning with CODONA (Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos, Colin Walcott) as Don Cherry describes being track-side during the song 'Clicky Clacky' with a train whistle, sitar, and the subtle beat of a snare drum providing the train's approach. Following that piece and emerging from the previous song's final whistle, 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND) weaves a tail about a corrupt politician with their song 'That's the Way The Railroad Runs.' Later in the set, THE WHITE STRIPES song 'Little Acorns' provides the storytelling metaphor of a squirrel storing its food for the winter to a woman overcoming her problems followed by a MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO composition and into ERNIE 'Ghoulardi' ANDERSON'S voice-over during a quasi-commercial within in the song 'Leisure World' by JOE BYRD & THE FIELD HIPPIES about a retirement community in California.

There's also new music from TRACEY THOMAS, CALIFONE, and CODE SANGALA, covers of J.S. Bach (SWINGLE SINGERS) and the Talking Heads (ANGELIQUE KIDJO) as well as a piece in honor of Florian Schneider of KRAFTWERK, who passed away earlier this week.

    Today's Set List:

THE COCKTAIL PREACHERS 'Kilameawea' - Chicago Surf Rally** 2:30
ALEXANDER COURAGE 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' - Leonard Nimoy: Mr. Spock's Music From Outer Space 2:30

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #366) - 8th Anniversary - April 24, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
As each week whirls on by through what feels like a dense fog of mundane routine, I plod along with my daily rituals involving preparing breakfast, watching the morning news, and then sitting down to do what I love to do, assemble the pieces for another edition of my weekly radio broadcast. About half way through this week's process I realized that this current program marks, in fact, the 8th anniversary of my return to radio after a thirty year hiatus so on today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #366), I'll celebrate that achievement in a more understated way.

You'll hear some of my 'fav's' as far as artists go with DAEVID ALLEN, ROBERT WYATT, SLAPP HAPPY, VAN DER GRAAF, and 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND) all getting their due diligence. There's plenty of new material including more from WIRE, SUFJAN STEVENS & LOWELL BRAMS, CHRISTONE 'KINGFISH' INGRAM, and BILL FRISELL; as well as additions to the playlist from BRYAN SCARY (an absolute stunner) and MARMOLIN (a violin and marimba duo).

From the 'vault' there's a PINK FLOYD rarity from the Zabriskie Point soundtrack, plus BILL LASWELL, GURU GURU, 10 CC, and IVOR CUTLER and even an appearance by PHILLIP GLASS. International sounds get airtime as well, with JUANA MOLINA, DJIVAN GASPARAYAN & MICHAEL BROOK, and DENGUE FEVER all adding elements to the overall mix.

I've added two bands (OUTRONAUT & THE BREAKERS) from the just released 'Chicago Surf Party' album to the fifth set, which includes a cut from PRIMUS, MAN OR ASTRO-MAN, ALICE COOPER,
and two 'obscure' pieces (what else would you expect from me?) from Rhino's BEAT GENERATION box set and an ULTRA LOUNGE sampler.

It all starts off with JORMA KAUKONEN from his legendary 'Quah' release and the acoustic gem appropriately titled, 'I'll Be All Right.' Music just makes life better no matter what we have to endure.

    Today's set list:

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #365) - Hal Willner Remembered - April 17, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
I can best describe this week's show, TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #365), as a 'sound collage' dedicated to a truly great, yet under appreciated music producer, HAL WILLNER. Hal succumbed to complications from the corona virus last week in New York City, and in a display of bitter irony, his passing occurred on the same date as legendary folk songwriter, JOHN PRINE. Both men were giants in their own right, and although Hal might not have been as well known, his influence throughout the music world was just as essential.

One can better understand the magnitude of this loss by listening to his work and his efforts as a facilitator to bring artists from musically diverse backgrounds together to produce an array of unique tribute albums over the last forty years. THELONIOUS MONK, CHARLIE MINGUS, KURT WEILL, and vintage DISNEY film music have all been the subjects of his efforts.

Throughout today's program I'll touch upon those and other projects, beginning with CHRIS SPEDDING and PETER FRAMPTON'S take on the Monk melody, 'Work,' during the first set, to an entire segment that follows and features DR. JOHN and DAVID THOMAS doing pirate ballads from two separate releases, as well as ELVIS COSTELLO and HUBERT SELBY JR. (playing Mingus), SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA, NATALIE MERCHANT, THE ROCHES, and MICHAEL STIPE (interpreting Disney tunes), and Hal with RALPH CARNEY, exploring trip hoppy themes from Hal's 'Whoops, I'm An Indian' album.

There will also be music heard from albums that Hal produced by LAURIE ANDERSON and WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS, and his effort to restore cartoon musical masterpieces by THE CARL STALLINGS PROJECT.

Surrounding all of this will be other sets of music featuring a gaggle of diverse musical artists ranging from SHAWN PHILLIPS, HOLGAR CZUKAY (with U-SHE), JOHN PRINE, SUFJAN STEVENS (and LOWELL BRAMS), OSIBISA, TALKING HEADS, CHEIKH LO, and THE TUBES (channeling CAPTAIN BEEFHEART).

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #364) - April 10, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
Today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #364) for Friday, April 10 marks a one month milestone since my self isolation began to prevent infection from the corona virus. I, like many of you, am taking extraordinary measures to remain healthy during this pandemic, with groceries, mail, and anything I need being thoroughly disinfected before it enters my home. I, like my many friends & relatives, have spent hours watching TV, preparing food, and in my case, working on bringing to the listeners of my broadcast/podcast, a extremely well made free form radio show. This week, I started early, got plenty of inspiration, and have assembled something really special.

I'll start off the festivities with two legendary Ohio bands, the GLASS HARP and the JAMES GANG. Then I'll pay homage to Adam Schlesinger, (of FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE), add in some DAEVID ALLEN, acoustic LED ZEPPELIN, DEERHOOF, and another great cut from LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE'S latest.

The second set has more new material from 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND),
CHRISTONE 'KINGFISH' INGRAM, and BILL FRISELL with the BONZO DOG BAND, AUTOMATIC MAN, and NEIL YOUNG ('Tonight's The Night') added in for good measure.

I hit my stride by the second hour with GLENN KOTCHE'S 'Adventureland,' THOMAS NEWMAN'S WALL-E soundtrack, the TONY WILLIAMS LIFETME, a rarely heard PETER GABRIEL B-side, cartoon music's HOYT CURTIN (with the Peter Potamus theme), and ORANJI SYMPHONETTE (featuring RALPH CARNEY) playing Mancini. The final three sets that follow will sonically blow your mind with music from PERE UBU, the late jazz trumpeter WALLACE RONEY, CAMPER VAN CHADBOURNE, BRIAN ENO'S 'Baby's On Fire,' more JOHN PRINE (R.I.P.) and a new track from SUFJAN STEVENS & LOWELL BRAMS latest offering.

Finally, JOE STRUMMER & THE MESCALERO'S, RICKIE LEE JONES, TAJ MAHAL, and KALEIDOSCOPE all help rounding out this stellar program. Pack up all of your uncertainties and settle in for a great three hours!

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #362) - March 27, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
I'm back for the second week in a row with a new TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #362) and as I and everyone I know adjust to 'sheltering in place,' I've assembled another three plus hour freeform radio program to entertain you and keep you smiling in these turbulent times. It's time to tap your toes, swoon from side to side, and let the music take you to that 'happy place' (sort of like those 'Taco Tuesdays' but with your own musical food for the soul instead of your favorite restaurants).

It all begins with another great number from LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE to start things off, then 808 STATE gets the beat extended before songs from the EELS, LUNA, and Akron's own HI-FI'S have you dancin' around the room. FRANK ZAPPA adds some subtle bluesy jazz with 'It Just Might Be A One Shot Deal' before Malawi's CODE SANGALA joyously moves your heart strings with their Afro-folk grooves.

Ready for more? Up next it's JON BATISTE and JOHN MARTYN, then more from Akron's FUNERAL PROPOSALS, Finnish guitar virtuoso JUKKA TOLONEN, a RETURN TO FOREVER classic ('The Magician') and several other great melodies before SWOLLEN MONKEYS (with Mars Williams & Ralph Carney) has you pumping your fists in the air.

That's not even this week's main course my friends. I'll conjure up XTC, JOHN LENNON, and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR'S 'Every Bloody Emperor,' before a set with dialogue from 'The Big Lebowski' and music from VIOLENT FEMMES, KENNY ROGERS & THE FIRST EDITION (guess what song), JIMI HENDRIX, and GIBBY HAYNES. What could possibly follow that you ask? Songs about the future from SLEATER-KINNEY and DAVID BYRNE and songs about the working class from 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND) and the Welsh band MAN before finishing up with some pleasant surprises via CALIFONE and the late MANU DIBANGO. We've all got to ride this one out so let's all make the best of it. I'll bring the tunes!

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #361) - March 20, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
It's been two weeks since the last 'new' offering of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES and in that brief moment of time, how we interact with one another, go about our daily routines, and approach even the most mundane tasks has been radically altered. New or rarely used phrases like 'social distancing,' 'self quarantine', and 'mandatory isolation' are now part of our daily repertoire. All schools are shuttered and many restaurants closed (except for delivery in some cases) and we are all on hiatus from attending concerts and other social events (not to mention every sporting event from every league large and small) for the immediate future.

After a week or so to deal with all the changes I needed to make to my life to survive under these unprecedented world events, I've completed my first new radio podcast (Episode #361) of this 'new normal.' Music has always been the way I've expressed myself, and today's show has at it's heart, the eclectic nature of my tastes and all the nuances that you expect to hear coming from me.

So there's poignant 'vault' classics from PETER HAMMILL, ROXY MUSIC, ROY HARPER, KING CRIMSON, LAURIE ANDERSON, and APHRODITE'S CHILD as well as more recent work from my personal heroes ROBERT WYATT and PETER GABRIEL. New music will be played from 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND), WIRE, CALIFONE, LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE, and FRANK BLACK (singing Mose Allison).

Local artists get their due with songs from PERE UBU, FUNERAL PROPOSALS, CHRIS BUTLER (his ode to #45, 'Charlie Tan' will be played). Speaking of local, during the fifth set (which Chris leads off) there's other artists who came from my 'neck of the woods' that you'll hear including DEVO, DINK, GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, FUZZHEAD, JOE WALSH, and THE BLACK KEYS.

Hope you all can tune in for this one. I'll be taking it one week at a time from here on out, but then, we all are. Stay safe (and healthy).
