Transmusic Airwaves

We've arrived at the end of another week and that signifies the beginning of another new TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #389). It's been a mind-numbing last few days, uh... maybe I should qualify it even further... week...months...so let's just stick to the task at hand. I've assembled another great little musical distraction to hopefully, keep your brain from imploding any further than it already has. It's a simple three hour escape from your current surroundings (so said Gilligan to the passengers of the S.S. Minnow before departing the harbor on that famous excursion). Here's some of the 'sights' you'll see today, metaphorically.

A new SUFJAN STEVENS song from his just released album, The Ascension' starts things off followed by PETER GARBIEL'S 'Sky Blue,' a didgeridoo laden track from NOMAD, then an ethereal spoken word piece from VIGGO MORTENSEN & BUCKETHEAD, THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, another spoken word (meets jazz this time) inspired piece from AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE, another new track from SPROINGG'S latest, 'Clam,' and finishes with the Congolese psychedelic sounds from KOKOKO.

The second set brings you WILCO, BLUE MAN GROUP (doing 'White Rabbit'), GONG, THE BONZO DOG BAND, RALPH CARNEY, SYD BARRETT, DEVO, BUSH, another new piece from THUMBSCREW, and finishes with a classic from the PENTANGLE. (all in that order).

This week marked the arrival of fall and with it, the anticipation of cooler temperatures and brighter colors, yet there's a sense of the coming cold and darkness that the approaching months (the election notwithstanding) will bring. Rather than fret about what is forthcoming, I'll focus on the present with my usual gusto and have assembled another new TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #388) while taking each day as it comes.

You, my friends and listeners, always ask 'what's in store for this week's program?” Plenty. During the first set today there's jazz from THUMBSCREW and BRAND X to get the ball rolling, then the international sounds of JOI, a RADIOHEAD track from OK Computer, RYUICHI SAKAMOTO, early JADE WARRIOR, and another song from SLEEP DAY'S (Shane Curry) newly reissued debut.

That all leads to numerous 'vault' selections including music from GENTLE GIANT, FAMILY, TOM RAPP, THE MUFFINS, JOE WALSH, and even more obscure artists PHANTASIA and VAINCIA DOBLE. HARVEY GOLD adds his interpretation of JOHN CALE'S 'Close Watch' from his rare 'Experiments' single of the 1970's. Early synthesist's Robert Mason (STARDRIVE) and WENDY CARLOS (Switched On Bach) surround LAURIE ANDERSON, PETER HAMMILL, CAN, and BECK during the fifth set as well.

This week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #387) marks the return of a special feature within the program called a 'Character Study,' an in depth look at the life and music of an individual or group that's had a significant impact on my musical world and I can't think of anyone better to look at than local Akron musician (and close friend), HARVEY GOLD.

Harvey sat down with me earlier this week to reminisce about his musical journey and we will discuss his work in the band's TIN HUEY, HALF CLEVELAND, THE HI-FI'S, and GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET as well as his new solo album, 'It's Messy Volume 1' which is officially in record stores today. Music from all of those entities will be played to augment this special.

In addition to the aforementioned feature, I managed to entice Mr. Gold into assembling a set of music consisting of some of his favorite artists (from THE MOVE to JOHN COLTRANE), which will be aired during today's third set.

As the torrential rains fell this past week the phrase 'go with the flow' kept running through my head and it became the mantra for my assembling the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #386).

Ideas for song segue's just flooded my brain right from the start as the string driven pop sensibility of SLEEP DAY'S (Shane Curry) newly reissued debut album, 'There's Always Something Wrong With Everything' lead me to weave melodically through the initial set with what followed it: the crooning of GODLEY & CREME, RYAN ELDER'S 'Rick & Morty Theme,' DAVID BYRNE, DEVOTCHKA, and the avant garde styling's of HENRY COW and THUMBSCREW (interpreting Anthony Braxton), only to finish with a new PERE UBU live cut, and KANTNER, SLICK, & FREIBERG all following in succession.

Anchoring the second set was a new melody from the German 'prog' trio SPROINGG, followed by OZRIC TENTACLES, then several pieces lamenting about the 'good old days' beginning with WILD MAN FISCHER, then ROXY MUSIC, THE DRIFTERS, and KEVIN AYERS, before tying everything together with THE HI-FI'S song 'Janie Take A Walk,' about the song writer's college years in Kent, Ohio.

My head is spinning as I attempt to describe this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #385) and for good reason. Each week as I assemble a new show I sit down and try to entice listeners to tune in by describing what's in store for them, by putting into words what I'll be playing in a way that'll make everyone who reads it want to tune in. This is the 385th time I've written the show's description and it's finally happened...the dreaded writer's block. Transcending boundaries, transcending the norms of conventional radio, and transporting the listener sonically on a truly unique journey into freeform radio is what I try to offer each week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES and it is, in part, the reason why I named this program what it is. If you are a regular listener you probably understand why I organize each show the way I do and what elements you can expect from me each week. New releases, jazz,international sounds, progressive rock, spoken word, plus several 'covers,' obscure artists from the 'vault,' and occasional comedy and motion picture dialogue are all part of the equation.

On this week's show (Episode #381) there's plenty of new releases including songs by SPARKS, FIONA APPLE, PERE UBU, BADLY DRAWN BOY, and STEPHEN MALKMUS all during the first set while surrounded by earlier tracks from LAIKA and JACK LANCASTER & ROBIN LUMLEY'S 'Marscape' album. HARVEY GOLD, BOB DYLAN, and MAKAYA MCCRAVEN all add their current offerings to the second set and are accompanied by vintage JERRY GARCIA, THE SLITS (covering 'Heard It Through The Grapevine'), spoken word from JOHN GIORNO, and TV music from 50's lounge pioneer ROBERT STAPLES.

Later on you'll hear tracks out of the 'vault' from ORNETTE COLEMAN, KING CRIMSON, THE FREE DESIGN, THE DAMNATION OF ADAM BLESSING, and YUSEF LATEEF while adding more new music from RAY LAMONTAGNE, OUTRONAUT, DEEP LIPS, THE DISTRICTS, and several others. Wow, we've already made it to August's doorstep and I can't figure out where the summer went. In year's past, I'd be making my way to Rhode Island to visit my siblings and make another excuse for attending the umpteenth Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. (I've been using that excuse since 1981). Well the plague has all but eliminated that idea so instead on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #380) I'll play some of the artists I've seen out there over the years when I attended the festivals. Among those artists heard today are WILCO, BANQUET OF THE SPIRITS, BILL FRISELL, ELVIS COSTELLO, and THE BAD PLUS.

But that's just part of the festivities I've got in store for you. There's new releases galore with tracks from FIONA APPLE, BADLY DRAWN BOY, BOB DYLAN, PERE UBU (their new 'live' album), MAKAYA MCCRAVEN (channeling Gil Scott Heron), and more goodness from HARVEY GOLD, SPARKS, and THE BREAKERS.

During the fourth set, you'll hear selections from three different artists, (THE BEATLES, THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION, and BLACK SABBATH) as each will play a song surrounded by a 'cover' of a different melody they wrote interpreted by CHIM KOTHARI, MONKS OF DOOM, The Bad Plus, and Bill Frisell. Speaking of 'covers,' I've got all the bases, well, you know, with ROBERT WYATT singing Ivor Cutler, LUNA (Luna Lee) having a go with Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells' on gayaguem, and BECK delving into some classic John Martyn.

There's also several 'vault' nuggets from GONG, JADE WARRIOR, and DICK DALE & THE DELTONES, world music with Mozambique's DILON DJINDI, Korean space metal pioneers JAMBANAI, and summer tropical crooners TOTO BONA LOKUA, and jazzy stylings from TOM WAITS and MAX ROACH. Tune in, it's gonna be hot!
