I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Thanksgiving is nearly upon us so on this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #394) I'll make note of it beginning with the JAMES GANG and their song 'Thanks' followed by DAEVID ALLEN'S whimsical 'Turkeybird's Breakfast' and set the tone further with the positive vibe of JIM'S BIG EGO'S spirited rendition of 'Feelin' Groovy.' You'll be dancing around the kitchen table by then so I'll add the JEFFERSON AIRPLANE'S ' Third Week At The Chelsea,' CRACKER'S 'Hallelujah,' and the legendary track 'Fazon' by SOPWITH CAMEL all as part of the first set.

The new MARY HALVERSON'S CODE GIRL album starts off the next set (with special guest vocals by ROBERT WYATT) and is followed by RALPH CARNEY'S homage to said vocalist, HENRY KAISER & SERGEI KURIOKHIN, another new cut from RICK HROMADKA, a blistering LEO KOTTKE melody, and the quirky 'Sing-Along' song from JOE BYRD & THE FIELD HIPPIES.

What a difference a week makes! As the uncertainty of last week's initial political tabulations became more certain, a majority of American's breathed a collective sigh of relief as our preferred candidate was named the projected winner. With monumental challenges ahead, we can begin to move slowly forward in our recovery from the PTSD that we've all been subjected to over the last four years even as the current 'child in charge' refuses to acknowledge reality and throws his daily grocery store tantrum in a futile attempt to get his way.

So this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #393) reflects that optimism in the very first set with the latest offering from RICK HROMADKA, 'Better Day's,' setting the tone which then gets amplified by XTC'S 'Standing In For Joe' and THE FLAMING LIPS (and Fwends) cover of the fab four's 'Getting Better,' before turning to new tracks from THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS, DEERHOOF, and THE BREAKERS interspersed with music from STEVE HILLAGE and CAT STEVENS.

During the second set, my quirky sensibilities kick into high gear beginning with Braxton infused jazz from THUMBSCREW, playful romps from HENRY MANCINI, POKEY LAFARGE & THE SOUTH CITY THREE, CHUCK BARRIS'S 'Dating Game' theme, TALKING HEADS, PRIMUS, GODLEY & CREME, and more pop stylings from SLEEP DAY (Shane Curry).

Today on the latest installment of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#27) it’s time for the monthly in depth feature, “Character Study,” this month focusing on legendary guitarist ROBERT FRIPP and his band KING CRIMSON. After fifty plus hours of research and post production, I’ve finally completed this extensive look at Robert Fripp’s career within the band KING CRIMSON and also focusing on his many side projects that have encompassed over four decades at the forefront of modern rock.

Included in the program today will be many “live” tidbits of KING CRIMSON including a 1969 performance of the original band doing “In the Court of the Crimson King” recorded at Fillmore West in San Francisco in December 1969, a 1974 “live” recording of “Lark’s Tongue in Aspic (Part 1),” plus notes on FRIPP’S revolutionary use of his “Frippertronic’s” and “Soundscapes” ambient playback systems, his work at “Guitar Craft” teaching new playing techniques, and his work as a producer and guitarist on various other projects (including the League of Gentlemen, Sylvian/Fripp band, Sunday All Over the World band, Peter Gabriel, and lots more.) It was no little task to whittle down all of this into a two hour program today as Fripp has appeared in over 700 recordings.

It's been an incredibly long week as election results continue to be tabulated and although it's becoming more likely that the result will reflect a candidate that I prefer, I decided several days ago to forgo the undue pressure of producing a new show in favor of releasing several 'vault' gems this week.

I'll begin on Friday, November 6th with TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES #83, originally broadcast on September 19, 2014 on SFCR/KUSF-In-Exile and featuring a variety of music from PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE, JACKIE GLEASON ORCHESTRA, KRAFTWERK, THE BEATLES, SPIRIT (their song 'Taurus' which was the center of the Led Zeppelin lawsuit), and new (at the time) music from PERE UBU, KEN NORDINE, JAGWAR MA, and much more.

On Sunday November 8th I'll retrieve TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVE # 27, my long ago archived 'Character Study' on the life and music of ROBERT FRIPP & KING CRIMSON, which initially aired on August 27, 2013 on SFCR. There will be several live recordings heard of the band including a rendition of 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' recorded in 1969 at Fillmore West.

Then on Tuesday, November 10 I'll unwrap an early gift and play TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES #149, my 'Best Of 2015' show, originally broadcast on December 25, 2015. Among my fav's that year were releases from WILCO, LAURIE ANDERSON, CALEXICO, DENGUE FEVER, and SUFJAN STEVENS.

So there's plenty of archived material to keep everyone happy. I'll get to work on another sparkling new program for release next week.

The Czech band Plastic People of the Universe begins this week’s festivities with a song from the album Hovezi Porazka (Translation: “The Defeat of Bovine Animals”) and the program finishes with the song “L’Amour Perdu (Translation: “Lost Love”) by Neil Innes.
In between, nearly three hours of musical twists and turns with a few references to “space,” some orchestral based pieces from The Beatles (“Sea of Time”), Spirit (“Taurus”), and Patti Smith (“Fuji-San”); plus more NEW material from Pere Ubu, Ken Nordine, The Electric Wurms, Junip, and Jagwar Ma.

It's 2...2...two treats in one! After having an additional week to pause and refresh my mind it's finally time for my 9th Annual Halloween Special. This year I'm combining it with a once every four year event, a Presidential Election Year special.

And just in time (I might add) because this weekend marks a Halloween ultra-rare 'blue' full moon actually occurring on Halloween eve. Combining this is an unprecedented rise (both in the U.S. and worldwide) of COVID pandemic numbers, increasingly horrific wildfires and another catastrophic hurricane stateside, all leading up to the 2020 presidential election which could very well decide the future of our fragile democracy. So with all that in mind, welcome to TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #392) the HALLOWEEN/ELECTION 2020 SPECIAL!

The first ninety minutes of the program features three 'Halloween themed' sets with spooky music from THE BREAKERS, THE SHAGGS, SONIC YOUTH, JAN HAMMER, KALEIDOSCOPE, and THE MEKONS to name a few with new tracks from SUFJAN STEVENS, OUTRONAUT, THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS, HARVEY GOLD, ALLEN RAVENSTINE (blended in with dialogue from the film Apocalypse Now), and BOB DYLAN.

The final three sets will focus on relatable music that surrounds what we've all been dealing with over the past four years. Music from VIOLENT FEMMES, PETER HAMMILL ('Vote Brand X'), LAURIE ANDERSON, TODD RUNDGREN (his 'Tin Foil Hat' with Donald Fagen), MINISTRY, RANDY NEWMAN (the song 'Putin'), and JOSEPH ARTHUR'S 'Campaign Song' help set the precedent.

Each week I begin my process of selecting tracks from a pile of newly released material, adding artists from an ever growing 'musical vault,' occasional spoken word, movie dialogue, or snippets of humor from a variety of sources, and stick them all into a file with the show I'm about to produce. This week that file is marked TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #391) and as the ideas began to gel, the file got bigger and bigger.

The first cut I select usually sets off a series of ideas in my head, and from that a show eventually emerges. It's all about the shows flow as far as I'm concerned, and each set represents a separate collage of sounds, and when a particular segue or two seamlessly moves the set along, I'm elated.

This week an acoustic blues number from BOBBY RUSH'S latest album gets everything rolling. That's followed by a 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND) composition, then BRIAN AUGER'S cover of 'Light My Fire' from his newly minted Introspection' release, another 'new' song, this time from THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS, a melody from BRIAN ENO (and friends), another great track from DEERHOOF'S 'Love-Lore' covers effort (Ornette Coleman is in the forefront here), and the set finishes with the Desert Nomad musical stylings of ETRAN FINATAWA.

I hope your intrigued by what I've described for you because the second set's 'collage' incorporates TIN CAN LUMINARY'S (John Hardin) electronica magic to start followed by a sonic train journey conducted (in French BTW) with ALLEN RAVENSTINE'S hands from his new 'Shore Leave' EP, then crosses over into the realm of jazz with JONATHAN JURION, followed by Henry Mancini as the WONDERMINTS interpret his song 'The Party' (as glasses clink and the conversations increase), leading into ALICE COOPER'S 'Second Coming,' ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, and DAVID BOWIE'S 'Lazarus' all in the first 66 minutes.

Later on there's a set of piano based tunes that leads to an homage to the recent hurricanes and floods in Louisiana featuring RANDY NEWMAN, NEIL YOUNG, THE PRETENDERS, GODLEY & CREME, ROBERT FRIPP & PETER GABRIEL, and THE WHO. There's plenty of new stuff played throughout the remainder of the show, so you get the proverbial drift right?

If there's one word that capture's all of the madness in the past week and puts it into perspective that word would be 'karma.' So as we arrive at the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #390) I'll do the totally predictable thing and play JOHN LENNON'S 'Instant Karma' as part of today's program. The rest of the show returns to my usual, unpredictable nature with a slew of new releases interspersed with some great 'vault' gems, a loosely similar series of songs about 'motoring,' and an unreleased musical ditty from TIN HUEY in honor of a 'geezer hipster' friend's upcoming birthday.

The new stuff includes a track from DEERHOOF'S 'Love-Lore' release to start it all off. It's actually an album of 'covers' from that eclectic band and the cut I've chosen combine's THE VELVETS 'All Tomorrow's Parties' with LAURIE ANDERSON'S 'Example 22.' Got your attention didn't I? Following that is a track from ALLEN RAVENSTINE'S limited edition EP, 'Electron Music,' then songs from ADRIAN BELEW, THE ART BEARS, ROBERT WYATT (i.e.: 'Solar Flares'), and jazz tracks from JONATHAN JURION (a Marion Brown piece) and THE BAD PLUS (doing 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World'). Are ya stoked yet?

The show 'motors' along with songs from RY COODER, THE CRAMPS, SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS, and CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, before veering into more new goodies from THUMBSCREW (channeling Anthony Braxton), BATTLES, and SUFJAN STEVENS until ultimately arriving at 'Instant Karma.'

Catch your breath as the third set will all but takes it away with music from STEVE REICH, MEDESKI, MARTIN, & WOOD (from a John Zorn songbook), GENTLE GIANT, another great SPROINGG piece, FIONA APPLE, and then Norwegian songstress MARI BOINE.

Later there's music from a new reissue of OSAMU KITAJIMA'S 'Benzaiten' and several tracks from the just released TODD RUNDGREN'S 'A Wizard, A True Star' live at the Akron Civic Theater, and of course, it reaches the finish line with TIN HUEY'S 'You Should've Been My Sister.'
