Transmusic Airwaves

On this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #405) I'll delve into how I go about creating each program and the realization that the very first artist that I pick to lead off each show usually determines the overall success of that show. That may seem like I've oversimplified it to some of my listeners so I'll actually walk you through the entire process of this program as it's assembled.

I decided to start today's show with JOE STRUMMER & THE MESCALERO'S, following it with HARVEY GOLD'S homage to him with 'In Consideration of Joe Strummer,' then adding a rollicking number from the XTC offshoot, THE DUKES OF STRATOSPHEAR, which ends in such a way that it seamlessly transitions into a track from the 'vault' by the band KHAN (from Space Shanty). That then morph's into the jazz tinged number, 'Blue Turk,' from ALICE COOPER'S 'School's Out' which blends itself into a track by ANGELO BADALAMENTI from the 'Twin Peaks' soundtrack, before finishing the set with RALPH CARNEY'S 'Funhouse' piece.

With me it's all about how certain notes or keys or even the style of a guitar riff allows a light bulb to go off above my head as the program progresses. During the set that follows, SEAN LENNON & CHARLOTTE KEMP MUHL perform a track from the Marc Bolan tribute album, 'Angelheaded Hipster' to begin, then a cut from the new album by THE MOUNTAIN GOATS is played and, inspired by the guitar and organ interlaced throughout the piece, it's followed by the GRATEFUL DEAD'S 'China Cat Sunflower' from 'Europe '72,' then new material from LEO KOTTKE (with MIKE GORDON), RY COODER, BILL FRISELL (from his 'Guitar in The Space Age' release), and finally a cut from DAEVID ALLEN.

Later on there's a bluesy ALBERT COLLINS song followed by the BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD, then a jazz standard by the CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE BIG BAND and numerous other selections that run from DAVID SYLVIAN and DEAD CAN DANCE, to FIRESIGN THEATRE, LEONARD BERNSTEIN'S 'West Side Story' and the RAMONES.

It's hard to believe the entire month of January is nearly over as I prepare yet another weekly foray into the world of freeform radio, but here we are, and I remain as excited as I've ever been with this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #404). Assembling the show has become almost second nature to me, but like everyone else, I hit a couple of creative road blocks this time and spent some additional hours reorganizing sets until I was satisfied with the finished product of my efforts.

During today's first half hour there's new music from the CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE BIG BAND and a MARC ALMOND rendition of another Marc Bolan song from the late Hal Willner produced Bolan tribute album, 'Angelheaded Hipster.' Surrounding those bookends are tracks from HUGH HOPPER'S 'Caveman Hughscore' album, Czech psych stalwarts THE PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (playing 'Sun Zoom Spark'), another new ONEOHRIX POINT NEVER cut, and THE ART OF NOISE.

My second set took a while to reassemble but the results should please everyone. It begins with NUSRAT FATAH ALI KHAN, then a late 60's psychedelic raga by the obscure band SHOCKING BLUE, then DWEEZIL ZAPPA'S interpretation of 'Tomorrow Never Knows,' which flows into a Middle Eastern laden piece from NATACHA ATLAS, before changing direction with BRAD MEHLDAU, KAMIKAZE GROUND CREW (featuring Ralph Carney), a BRAVE COMBO cover of 'Little Bit Of Soul, and finishes with a rarely heard song by DEVO.

Other things to look forward to today: More new material from LEO KOTTKE (with MIKE GORDON), WIRE, and THE MOUNTAIN GOATS; a BRAND X cover of a King Crimson song during a percussive driven set with music from CHICO FREEMAN, GUY EVANS (of Van Der Graaf), RENALDO & THE LOAF, and GEOFFREY ORYEMA, plus spoken word from KEN NORDINE and humor from NATIONAL LAMPOON.

There's a few new things that arrived this week (in addition to the new occupant in the White House) so during the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #403) I'll add those musical gifts to my usual programming while doing my best to unify a diverse array of musical style's into six cohesive sets over the course of today's program.

LEO KOTTKE* (with MIKE GORDON) from his latest offering 'Noon' gets the ball rolling and following that is BETH ORTON'S take on the Marc Bolan song 'Hippie Gumbo' from the late Hal Willner produced Bolan tribute album, 'Angelheaded Hipster.' Then I'll add BADFINGER, CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, GOMEZ, and PAUL KANTNER & THE JEFFERSON STARSHIP to round out the first set.

I'll lead off the second set with a cut from the latest by WIRE and more from GORILLAZ , then sprinkle in additional new material from THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS and BRAD MEHLDAU surrounding it all with other music from FILA BRAZILLIA, PHILLIP GLASS, and the song 'Sweet January' by the band IF.

Another stellar track from J.S. ONDARA (about losing his restaurant job because of the virus) gets the next set going, followed by JOHN LENNON'S 'Working Class Hero,' then tracks from PETER BLEGVAD, THE FEELIES, SAN FERMIN, and LAURIE ANDERSON all sonically add to the mix.

During the fifth set, in celebration of the Cleveland Browns foray into the playoffs for the first time in ages, there's songs about Ohio from JOHN BASSETTE ('Hello Cleveland'), THE BLACK KEYS, THE LOW ANTHEM, PETE TOWNSEND,THE PRETENDERS, MODEST MOUSE, and several others.

We've reached the middle of January already surrounded by unprecedented events that include an insurrection and riot, a second impeachment, and the forthcoming inauguration of a new president, all while cases of 'Covid' continue to ravage the country. With all the uncertainty swirling around us, I'm going to continue to do my part in bringing some relief to your overloaded senses by presenting the latest edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #402).

Among today's program highlights will be the premiere of the latest piece of music from the GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET (their rendition of John Zorn's 'Hutriel') during the final set as well as a track by CAPTAIN BEEFHEART in honor of his 80th birthday.

This week I'm returning to my regular Friday time slot as I've finally caught up with all the issues which lead me to be a day late over the holidays. On this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #401) I've got a fun packed show in store with several artists who share the same week of my birth as I do.

There's Daevid Allen (GONG) and Wayne Coyne (THE FLAMING LIPS) (January 13) and Jimmy Page (LED ZEPPELIN) (January 9) all incorporated into the first hour of the program. The two mentioned first appear during the first set and are accompanied by new tracks from ONDARA and GORILLAZ as well as older material from HECTOR ZAZOU (with Barbara Gogan), MARI BOINE, and BECK.

LED ZEPPELIN'S instrumental version of 'No Quarter' anchors a second set with additional music from BRAD MEHLDAU, TERJE RYPDAL, MITCHELL FROOM, and a cover of 'Norwegian Wood' by THE FIERY FURNACES. And all that merely lights the candles for the final two hours.

There 'vault' selections from SPIRIT, SUPERSISTER, and THE WHO with more new stuff from RICK HROMADKA and THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS in the third set, then new material from THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, and NICK MASON'S SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS in the fourth blended into music from KEVIN AYERS, PERE UBU, and WASIS DIOP.

The new year has arrived and as we begin anew, so does another milestone as TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES celebrates it's 400th episode. I'll do it in a variety of ways today as I honor some of the musicians we lost last year, add several more releases to my 'Best Of' list that didn't make it on to my previous show, and surround compositions by FRANK ZAPPA and electronica wizards ALLEN RAVENSTINE, ROBERT WHEELER, & CHRIS STEPHENS with great music from other artists.

I'll start off the program by honoring the late Kent State wounded student and activist Alan Canfora with NEIL YOUNG'S acoustic version of 'Ohio' from his latest EP, and follow it with tracks by JOHN PRINE, HAL WILLNER (with Ralph Carney) KENNY ROGERS, and KRAFTWERK'S FLORIAN SCHNEIDER, (all who left us last year) interspersed with new cuts from MARY HALVERSON'S CODE GIRL and THE FLAMING LIPS.

Two excerpts from FRANK ZAPPA'S ' 'Lumpy Gravy Pt. 1' are surrounded with new cuts from ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, GORRILAZ (with Robert Smith), NICK MASON'S SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS, and the EELS during today's third set. Ring out the old and ring in the new is the understatement of the year during these covid times and what better way to finish off what remains of 2020 than by recognizing all the great music from amazing artists that helped us all cope with the turmoil that surrounded us. Greeting from snowy Akron, Ohio! As 2020 drags us all kicking and screaming towards it's final weeks, I have been working my tail off to finish the 9th annual TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#398) Christmas special. So in keeping with everything else around us that we've had to adjust to as the 'New Normal,' I was forced to delay this years program by a single day. Well it's finally arrived (just like all your Christmas presents from out of town this year).

I'll begin the show with several songs about snow from FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE, GALAXIE 500, and CLAUDIA SCHMIDT, before segueing into SAM BUSH'S rendition of 'Let It Snow, ' ZEE AVI'S take on the song 'Frosty The Snowman,' the late DANIEL JOHNSTON'S cover of 'Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer,' before completing the set with songs from THE BEACH BOYS and THE PERSUASIONS.

It’s hard to believe we're only two weeks away from Christmas with all the extraneous noise coming from your TV, computer screens, and so called smart phones about election rigging, covid outbreaks, and conspiracy theories so maybe, just maybe, now's the perfect time to tune it all out and escape for three hours with this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #397).

Here's what my three hours of alternative reality will bring to you this week. XTC, THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM, and JOE BYRD'S 'The United States Of America' album all gathering round the fire place to start off the program's first set with covers by THE MAGNETIC NORTH (The Beatles) and BELARUS (The Beach Boys) leading into NICK MASON'S SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS latest with a rousing rendition of 'Fearless' to complete that initial half hour.
