Transmusic Airwaves returns this week with Episode #419, a brand new program filled with recent releases from local artists THE BLACK KEYS, COLIN JOHN, and CHRIS BUTLER (his latest song, ‘Beautiful Tail’), a long anticipated live recording by Germany’s legendary CAN (a track from ‘Live in Stuttgart 1975’), and an Ornette Coleman piece covered on the latest album by CHARLES LLOYD & THE MARVELS (with Bill Frisell).

The Black Keys gets the day started with their cover of an R. L. Burnside song from ‘Delta Kream’, and following that Akron’s 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND) picks up the speed with ‘That’s The Way The Railroad Runs,’ before everything explodes with ‘Shakin’ All Over,’ from THE WHO (Live At Leeds). Then Charles Lloyd & The Marvels do their take on Ornette Coleman, the Macedonian group KOCANI ORKESTAR covers Dylan’s ‘Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,’ and BATTLES and THE SACHEL ENSEMBLE add their notes to the first set.

As we begin the latest Memorial Day festivities this weekend after a year of cocooning (like caterpillar larvae) to avoid the dreaded plague, I thought it would be nice to revisit one of the numerous ‘Character Study’ features that I began producing back in 2013 featuring an in depth look at an artist or group that’s made a significant contribution to modern music. Today, from my program archives, I’ll revisit my look at the life and music of Peter Gabriel, originally broadcast on May 30, 2014 over SFCR San Francisco Community Radio. Below are the original programming notes for that program. Next week I’ll return with another new program for your enjoyment.

Show highlights:

Today on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#67), I’m marking the return of the bi-monthly feature, “Character Study,” with a look at the life and music of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2014 inductee PETER GABRIEL in the programs final two hours.
Included in today’s program will be music spanning Gabriel’s entire career encompassing his work in Genesis, his sizable catalog of solo material, his work on film soundtracks, his collaboration with other artists, and I’ll even mix in a few rare live recordings along the way. The program also looks at Gabriel’s efforts in raising awareness to humanitarian issues, his promotion of world music styles, and his cutting edge efforts in bringing modern digital technologies to fruition.

Spring has finally arrived and the weather is absolutely gorgeous, just as mask restrictions are lifting and vaccinations increase, allowing all of us to become more optimistic about things to come. Music has been an integral part of coping with life over the last year so now it’s role (to me) is to bring that joy we always associate with it back to where it belongs.

This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #418) I’ll begin the show with RHIANNON GIDDEN’S & FRANCESCO TURRISI'S rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ from their new release, followed by more new material from ROBERT PLANT and THE BUDOS BAND, then head off into space with tracks from WOODEN SHJIPS, KEN NORDINE, and HAWKWIND before returning with music from KRAFTWERK and THE BAD PLUS.

Twists (musically) abound during today’s third set as JONATHAN RICHMAN & THE MODERN LOVERS ‘Roadrunner’ leads things off, then songs from CRACKER and HAYSEED DIXIE follow into songs about New York city from EUGENE CHADBOURNE, XTC, and LOU REED, before stretching the boundaries with a MOEBIUS, CONNY PLANK, & MAYO THOMPSON cut, and pieces from R. Life is full of lemons or so the quote goes, so get going and make lemonade. After two weeks of addressing production issues, it’s time for a new TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #415), the perfect refreshment for all of the woes I’ve dealt with lately. In fact, this program began right as those hurdles began to appear, and as I continue to address them, I found ways to make this show happen without losing the quality standards I’ve set for myself in the process.

It’s been a rough couple of week's as a technical issue has forced me into dipping into my archival ‘vault’ and pulling out some programs from the past until I can get new programming back to levels you’ve come to expect from this show. As it now stands, new shows will remain on hiatus for the next couple of weeks, so this week I’ll offer up TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #105) from February 20, 2015. This edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#105) marks the beginning of my third year producing this program under its current name and on today’s show I’ll play several cover versions of popular songs and resurrect a few songs, a comedy bit, and other sundries that are close to my heart to celebrate

.You’ll hear a ‘dub’ version of ‘Hush Little Baby,’ Ananda Shankar’s sitar inspired version of ‘Light My Fire,’ and a Bobby McFerrin and Yo Yo Ma duet of ‘Flight of the Bumble Bee’ blended into the first hour with several others strewn throughout. I’ve added Yusef Lateef’s ‘Strange Lullaby’ and National Lampoon’s ‘Mr. Roberts #1’ (the hilarious interview of the hung over bass player) plus a selection from ‘West Side Story’ to the merriment.

Today I'm offering a look back to an earlier time and present a show from my archives, marking the anniversary of my second year back on the air at KUSF-In Exile, San Francisco Community Radio. It's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES EPISODE #61, which originally aired on April 18, 2014. Below is the description of the program and the show's playlist.

Two years...24 months...104 weeks (and episodes)...three different show titles...one GREAT radio station!!
With today’s program, Transmusic Airwaves (#61), I’ve completed two years at SFCR (San Francisco Community Radio)/KUSF-in-Exile. Being part of the bay area’s free form community radio station has been a thrill for me. It hardly seems like yesterday when a former colleague asked me if I’d be interested in returning to radio after three decades of absence to do a show at San Francisco’s legendary station.
Early on I had my doubts if this would work, but thankfully it has. Left with a couple of weeks to prepare back then I decided the show would take on the elements of free form programming that I grew up listening to in the 1970’s in the Cleveland, Ohio area. It was that radio and music scene which has molded my personal tastes ever since.
So here we are, finishing up year two and set to start year three. Today’s program will begin with Mose Allison explaining “My Brain” and cover a multitude of styles over its three hour length.

Greetings campers,

It's time for another weekly foray into the world of freeform radio. This week on Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #414) it's a doozy of a show and I think you'll have a swell time listening to it. Jeepers, maybe I should quit describing it like a nineteenth-century charlatan and actually tell you some of the things you'll be hearing this week

There's songs about Martians by David Bowie(interpreted by The Bad Plus) Marc Bolan (sung by Emily Haines) and of course, the Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers classic 'Here Come The Martian Martians.'
