Transmusic Airwaves

Get out your boogie board, grab the SPF 50 sunscreen, spread out that large beach blanket, and open up your favorite thermos that you’ve filled with margarita's as this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #429) catches the hottest musical waves with new (and older as well) surf inspired tracks all gathered together during today’s second set. 

You’ll hear the premiere of ‘Hadrial,’ the latest interpretation of John Zorn’s ‘Masada’ songbook from GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, ‘Egyptian Surf’ from THE BREAKERS recently released ‘Torch Light,’ NEMATOAD (surfing The Stones), THE VENTURES (strumming their classic ‘Walk, Don’t Run’) and COLIN JOHN riding a crest on baby sitar. Plus, in stylistically similar fashion RY COODER channel’s Elvis, the MONKS OF DOOM explore Zappa’s ‘Who Are The Brain Police,’ CHIM KOTARI covers ‘Eleanor Rigby’, and MICHEAL BROOK rounds it all out on infinite guitar.

Stick around because that’s just the tip of the proverbial dorsal fin and there’s a whole pod’s worth of great music throughout today’s festivities. Prog freaks get GENESIS, PFM, ROBERT FRIPP (with David Byrne), and HAPPY THE MAN, jazz aficionado's have OREGON and DARCY JAMES ARGUE’S SECRET SOCIETY, a touch of melancholy is provided by NEIL YOUNG and ELLIOT SMITH, and unusual themes are provided by HARRY PARTCH, RON GEESIN, and ROGER RUSKIN SPEAR. It’s time for another TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #428) and this week I’ll start it all off with PATTI SMITH’S ‘Summer Cannibals,’ add in some ‘Salt Peanuts’ to snack on courtesy of DIZZY GILLESPIE, and surround those pieces with KEN NORDINE, TALL DWARFS, humor from FIRESIGN THEATRE, and swinging cafe music from RAMNE, RICHARD GALLIANO, DEVOTCHKA, and BRAVE COMBO (taking you to ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’).

Get your toes a tappin’ because we’re just getting started. There are plenty of ‘vault’ classics from the likes of ROXY MUSIC (“Do The Strand’), WEATHER REPORT, PETER HAMMILL, and JOHN CALE, ‘covers’ from ASTRALASIA (King Crimson), MCKENDREE SPRING (Neil Young), and NICK CAVE (T. Transmusic Airwaves presents another 'vault' treasure from my early days at KUSF-In-Exile/SFCR (San Francisco Community Radio). Can you believe July is at its end already? The older one gets, the faster ones life rushes by. I can no longer slow it down to the point I had in grade school where that clock seemed to barely move for the first hour each day and I couldn’t wait for the day to be over. 

Now, it’s always the 50th anniversary of something on a daily basis so today on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #427) I’ll honor that very anniversary of FUNKADELIC’S psychedelic masterpiece, ‘Maggot Brain.’

On this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #425) the program begins with a track from the latest album by ALTIN GUN (Amsterdam’s Turkish/Psychedelic folk specialist’s) and over the course of the next thirty minutes, covers styles ranging from ethereal (BRIAN ENO, BLACK DUB, and MILOS) to much edgier (DUKES OF STRATOSPHEAR, QUILT, THEE OH SEES, and JORMA KAUKONEN). The show evolves for the remaining two and a half hours in the same fashion your used to coming from my programming, by taking twists and unexpected turns over the course of each set that follows.

During the second set, there’s three pieces from film soundtracks (by ALEXANDRE DESPLAT, ENNIO MORRICONE, and MARCO BELTRAMI) mixed in with quirky musical tidbits from LAURIE ANDERSON, NEGATIVLAND, THE RESIDENTS, and Pere Ubu’s DAVID THOMAS, a vintage PINK FLOYD cut, and a deliciously strange tale weaved sonically by JIM WHITE.

It’s time for another weekly installment of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #424) and today I’ve got a set that honors ‘World UFO Day,’ another that explores Mediterranean song structures, and one that has at it’s core, some uniquely unusual spoken word pieces intermixed with equally unusual melodies. Intrigued? Here are a few descriptive clues for you.

The first set starts off with the UFO based theme and features the MONKS OF DOOM (doing Steve Hillage’s ‘Light In The Sky’), followed by FIRESIGN THEATRE (‘Army Training Film’), THE BEYONDERERS, JAH WOBBLE, and dialogue from ROBERT CALVERT. Then RALPH CARNEY & CHRIS BUTLER bring you ‘World UFO Day’ followed by LOUIS + BEBE BARRON’S overture from the film ‘Forbidden Planet,’ a galactic surf song from THE BREAKERS, before finishing with THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE.

During the second set Mediterranean influenced pieces are played by ROMANYI ROTA, GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, Algerian instrumentalist ABDELLI, and SKY CRIES MARY before adding Mali’s ANANSY CISSE, England’s JOHN MARTYN, and the talented FIONA APPLE to the remainder of the set.

Then there’s that whole other matter of uniquely strange pieces from LES CLAYPOOL, TOM WAITS, KEN NORDINE, and CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (‘Fast & bulbous, get it?’), mixed with the German bands FSK and CAN, as well as WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS singing ‘Falling In Love Again’ auf Deutsch.
