Season’s Greeting and Happy Holly Daze!
Well it’s finally arrived, that dreaded week where predictable Christmas muzak propagates the entertainment airwaves and there aren’t enough throw pillows around to bury your head in while yelling PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!
I’ve got just the solution for everyone and it comes from someone who truly loathes all the sappy musical excrement that is deposited everywhere you go that your ears are forced to ‘step in’ this time of year. The solution that I am of course speaking of, is myself and my warped sense of Christmas music that you can hear during my 10th Annual Christmas Special on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #447) which can be heard a day earlier beginning Thursday, December 23 at 9:00 am.
Let’s face it folks, where else can you hear a set of holiday music that begins with the BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA (with MAVIS STAPLES) and ends with KLAUS NOMI? In between those completely opposite universes I’ve added RALPH CARNEY (his ‘Happy Solstice Song’) WILLIE NELSON, RY COODER, JOHN CALE (‘Child’s Christmas In Wales’), JOHN ZORN, BRAVE COMBO, and National Lampoon’s CHRISTOPHER GUEST (as Rod Serling describing the first Xmas in the ‘Twilight Zone’). That example is from today’s third set, BTW.
I’ll incorporate other local favorites with their holiday ditties (THE WAITRESSES ‘Christmas Wrapping, ‘ THE HI-FI’S, and GLENN LAZEAR) during the course of the show and sprinkle in a multitude of genres including jazz (BILL EVANS, VINCE GUARALDI, and DAVE BRUBECK), ethnic (THE KLEZMONAUTS, MARI BOINE), folk (DAN HICKS & HIS HOT LICKS, SULTANS OF SWING), progressive (OF MONTREAL, THE POLYPHONIC SPREE, ROBERT WYATT), traditional with a twist (JOSEPH BYRD, PERCY FAITH, ESQUIVEL), and popular (TOM WAITS, ST. VINCENT, SUFJAN STEVENS).
Have a safe and happy holiday my friends!
A playlist will be provided as quickly as Santa's stubby, blistered fingers can type it...Don't make him hurry because he still has time to fill your stocking with something unpleasant.
Here It is!

‘Twas the week before the night before...’awe come on! There’s plenty of time left before I unleash my warped sense of Christmas music on your earlobes so this week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #446) I’ll go onto other things including remembering one of Akron’s most beloved musical treasures, RALPH CARNEY. Ralph left a hole in the hearts of everyone he knew with his passing in 2017, so during the course of today’s show I’ll play several of his solo pieces as well as his work in projects with less familiar groups like THE ALL ONES and CARNEYBALL JOHNSON.
The first set begins with RALPH CARNEY’S SERIOUS JASS PROJECT followed by the big band jazz of ARTURO O’FARRILL, NICK MASON’S FICTITIOUS SPORTS (with Carla Bley & Robert Wyatt singing about spaceships), GONG, ANI DEFRANCO, and JULIE DYBLE & ANDY LEWIS covering Nick Drake’s ‘Northern Sky.’
Another great new track from the band LOW starts off the second set, followed by THE CLASH, ALLEN RAVENSTINE. OSAMU KITAJIMA, WU FEI & ABIGAIL WASHBURN, JAN HAMMER & JERRY GOODMAN, and Louisiana folk artist GINA FORSYTH.
There’s Bossa Nova like melodies from JOE PASS, BUSTER POINDEXTER (crooning Disney’s ‘Castles In Spain’), RALPH CARNEY, OS MUTANTES, and even a Tex-Mex take on it from CALEXICO during the third set. Add all those selections in with other music from TELEK and CODE SANGALA (world), JADE WARRIOR, BRIAN ENO, and GEORGE HARRISON (vault), and BRIAN SANDS and SAD PLANETS (local) and you’ve got quite a show assembled.

This week I’ll rave on about JONI MITCHELL’S ‘Kennedy Center’ honors, babble on about SOFT MACHINE’S retiring bassist Roy Babbington, discuss the intricacies of segues between The BONZO DOG BAND and THE WHO, and introduce another ‘wow’ factor where music in NFL films gets mixed into a set with DEVO, TIN HUEY, JACK WHITE, GLENN GOULD, and THE BURNING OF ROME (the band, not the event). Yet that’s only a smidgen of what’s in store on today’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #445).
Still skeptical? Looking for a few more examples oh ye of little faith? Howze Bouts (spoken in true N.E. Ohio dialect) ANI DEFRANCO, ARTURO O’FARRILL, WU FEI & ABIGAIL WASHBURN, M. WARD and ALLEN RAVENSTINE (all new) blended in with SLAPP HAPPY, SIGUR ROS, and MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND (a bit older) to comprise one set?
Or maybe you’d prefer said SOFT MACHINE surrounded with PHILLIP GLASS, EGG, WIRE, DEERHOOF and JOHN ZORN (both new), GALACTIC and THE JAMES GANG in that order comprising another set.
Additional new releases today include TERRI LYNN CARRINGTON & SOCIAL SCIENCE, NAYTRONIX, and LOW, more ‘vault’ tracks from 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS, CHARLES MINGUS, L. VOAG, and CAN, and the international sounds of AYUB OGADA and STOMU YAMASH’TA. It’s another packed three hour program I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #444) Ill pay tribute to the new BEATLES documentary, honor the legacy of STEPHEN SONDHEIM, play a series of songs about love and office work, and add music with themes about space and having the blues all assembled into my usual three hour free form adventure.
DEERHOOF, PAVEMENT, CRACKER, and PALBERTA all get installed around other music from JUKKA TOLONEN, CHI-PIG, MAGAZINE, and PETER HAMMILL resulting in the program’s first set today.
The second set combines jazz (JOHN ZORN, GILGAMESH, and ARTURO O’FARRILL), ethnic (ISSA BAGAYOGO), electronic (ALLEN RAVENSTINE), and film scores (ALEXANDRE DESPLAT and STEPHEN SONDHEIM) with another song about a film from SUFJAN STEPHEN & ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE.
During the fourth set, I’ll pay homage to THE BEATLES with ‘covers’ of their music from WILLIE NELSON, THE RESIDENTS, BILL WITHERS, and THE RUBY SUNS, surrounded by other music from LOW, FAUST, NAYTRONIX, ANDY PARTRIDGE, and JON BATISTE.
Plus there’s blues from ALBERT COLLINS and KEN NORDINE, bluegrass from BELA FLECK, new wave from GANG OF FOUR, and unusual melodies from HARRY PARTCH, BRUCE COCKBURN, and CAL HAND. Much assembly was required!

Today’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #443) happens to fall on the busiest shopping day of the year, ‘Black Friday,’ although marketing geniuses over the past decade have morphed that day into nearly a week by adding ‘Small Business Saturday,’ ‘Cyber-Monday’ and ‘Giving Tuesday’ in an attempt to relieve all of you of any remaining cash you’ve been struggling to hold on to for the past year.
And don’t forget to shove another ‘Record Store Day’ in that mix because the one in April isn’t enough, and one should always save room for music (much like pie) when you’ve stuffed yourselves to the gills with everything else.
Which brings me to the point (finally, thank god) of that whole diatribe above. You’re gonna need great music to get you through this marathon so here’s three hours worth to sooth, distract, and motivate you along during your shopping journey.
During the first hour there’s vintage tracks from NINO ROTA, JIM HENDRIX, MOONDOG, and yes, THE MONKEES (from their psychedelic album, ‘Head’), mixed together with ‘covers’ from PATTI SMITH (The Doors) and BROTHER CLEVE’S LUSH ORCHESTRA (Henry Mancini) and other music from BUTTHOLE SURFERS, DEERHOOF, VIOLENT FEMMES, NAYTRONIX, and ALLEN RAVENSTINE.
By the fourth set I’ll take ‘Sari’(Nordic) and Native American chants from WIMME, MARI BOINE, SACRED SPIRIT, and JIM PEPPER and sonically incorporate them around music from PINK FLOYD and ROBBIE ROBERTSON, then a little later I’ll gather NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, RY COODER, THE NEUTRONS, and POKEY LAFARGE around another musical table who’s centerpiece will be ROBERT WYATT’S ‘Soup Song.”
It’ll be loads of fun and sure beats snoring on the ‘lazy boy’ in front of something on TV you’re not watching.
And yes, the playlist will arrive later today, just like your on line orders.

What’s in store this week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #442) you ask? For starters, I’ve got a couple of new tracks from ALLEN RAVENSTINE’S just released album, ‘Nautilus,’ the MONKS OF DOOM covering the Soft Machine’s ‘Moon in June’ and ORNETTE COLEMAN & CHARLIE HADEN’S take on the theme from ‘Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,’ PATRICK CARNEY & RALPH CARNEY’S work on ‘Bojack’s Theme,’ and several other surprises along the way.
There’s more new songs from ANI DEFRANCO, NAYTRONIX, ARTURO O’FARRILL & THE AFRO-LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA, DEERHOOF, TERRANCE BLANCHARD, and JOHN ZORN.
From the ‘vault’ there’s GONG (from Angel’s Egg’), PAUL HORN (from ‘Inside The Taj Mahal’), JADE WARRIOR, THE FLYING LIZARDS and LITTLE FEAT,
15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND), MARTY STUART & HIS FABULOUS SUPERLATIVES, THE MEKONS, BJORK, STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS, and DAVID BYRNE all add additional sonics to the festivities.
It all gets started with a classic BRAND X track in honor of the late John Goodsall, the band’s guitarist. Oh, and there’s not a single mention about travel woes, turkey, gas prices, or politics.

Each week I look for an event or milestone to initially jump start my artistic process in creating another episode of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES. This week two posts on social media served that purpose; JONI MITCHELL (turning 78 years old ) and the 50th anniversary of JOHN MARTYN’S ‘Bless The Weather’ album both gave the show (Episode #441) it’s initial spark.
Next I began to compile more tracks from new releases, adding ANI DEFRANCO, NAYTRONIX, ANGELIQUE KIDJO, ARTURO O’FARRILL & THE AFRO-LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA, and POKEY LAFARGE in with other current pieces from DEERHOOF, THURSTON MOORE (from the Velvet's & Nico Tribute), ROBERT PLANT, TERRANCE BLANCHARD, and JOHN ZORN.
Then I reviewed some random releases or bands (THE STRANGLERS from their ‘Best Of,’ ARIEL PINK, SAN FERMIN, BRYAN SCARY), added bits of humor (MONTY PYTHON and FIRESIGN THEATRE), a Pet Sounds cover by THE MAGNETIC NORTH and a King Crimson cover by CONTROLLED BLEEDING, and ‘vault’ extractions from THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND, FAMILY, DAVID BOWIE, and the PEANUT BUTTER CONSPIRACY.
Want to see how this weeks puzzle was assembled? Your ears will thank you.

This week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #440) begins with a track from DEERHOOF’S latest release, ‘Actually, You Can’ followed by another piece from the new JOHN ZORN album, ‘Nostradamus, The Death Of Satan.’ Now that the tone has been set, I’ll honor the late founder of THE CHIEFTAINS, Paddy Maloney, with the song ‘Dunmore Lassies’ (which also features RY COODER), then offer your ears music from RHIANNON GIDDENS, the Finnish folk band VARTTINA, a DAEVID ALLEN sonnet, before finally turning to SPIRIT for ‘Nothing To Hide’ and WILCO’S ‘Wishful Thinking.’
Have I gotten your attention yet? Perhaps you need a few more names for encouragement. TIN HUEY, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD, AMON DUUL II, TODD RUNDGREN, the PHILIP GLASS ENSEMBLE, and ROXY MUSIC. All of those signify just part of today’s first half of the program.
Later I’ll add a set of music surrounding an ‘ old western cowboy’ theme with music from CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, ENNIO MORRICONE, ROBBIE ROBERTSON, CARAVAN, CLINT EASTWOOD, and TV classics ‘The Rifleman,’ The Virginian,’ and ‘Bonanza.’
Not to be left out, there’s international sounds from REMMY ONGALA & ORCHESTRE SUPER MATIMILA, TINARIWEN, and SENOR COCONUT, ‘vault’ jewels from FAUST and KEVIN AYERS, and a new offering from the JULIAN SEIGEL JAZZ ORCHESTRA. I hope that was incentive enough...Enjoy the show!

Midnight IS ‘the bewitching hour’ so to mark this years 10th anniversary HALLOWEEN SPECIAL on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #439) I’ve released the program at 12:01 am. Friday, October 29, 2021.
Getting the show started is the main title to ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ followed by NORMA TANEGA’S ‘You’re Dead,’ the theme to TV’s vampire mockumentary, ‘What We Do In The Shadows.’ Following that is PETER HAMMILL with ‘Energy Vampires’ and we’re off, running and screaming, for three more hours of HALLOWEEN madness.
This year has plenty of goodies sprinkled throughout the show including music surrounding dialogue from ‘The Shining’ and ‘Night Of The Living Dead,’ early 60’s horror movie radio spots, and tracks from new releases by COLIN JOHN, SUFJAN STEVENS & ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE, GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, GARBAGE, THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, and JOHN ZORN’S Nostradamus’ album.
I’ve got plenty of nasty bits to quench every vampires blood-lust including THE BREAKERS just released ‘Tubular Bells’ (The Exorcist Theme) during the third set surrounded by MIKE OLDFIELD’S 2003 rendition of his signature tune, as well as BRAVE COMBO and LUNA LEE’S own take on the melody. Surrounding them is music from JOHN HARDIN, RANDOM HOLD, and the LOS STRAITJACKETS surf inspired ‘Munster’s’ cover.
And what would Halloween be without ALICE COOPER’S ‘I Love The Dead,’ VIOLENT FEMMES ‘Country Death Song,’ and other nefarious oddities from IGGY POP, TOM WAITS, THE CRAMPS, JOHN CARPENTER, and PERE UBU. Your haunting has arrived so grab some holy water, a wooden spike, and that old book on how to break spells and your good to go!

Transmusic Airwaves is a journey beyond conventional radio boundaries. It encompasses various musical forms and styles loosely centered on “Progressive”, with attention to transitions that form…
Transmusic Airwaves is the brainchild of Paul Ciminero, whose radio roots began in the 1970's at WKSU's late-night Fresh Air program. Transmusic began weekly podcasts in 2013 that continued until Paul's passing at the end of 2022. Afterwards, it expanded as a collaborative effort introducing a broader audio palette via multiple hosts and their respective musical knowledge. In this way, Transmusic has become the modern form of the old Fresh Air program!
