Part of what makes creating this program each week over the past nine years such a joy is that I always seem to surprise myself with the things I come up with while assembling each show and on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #436), there’s a treasure trove of ah-ha moments after several days of brain fog had me wondering if I’d even be able to complete the process.

The musical equivalent of writer’s block? Not me. Take some CAN, sprinkle in new tracks from SUFJAN STEVENS & ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE and THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO Tribute albums, open the ‘vault’ and bring out some vintage BRUCE COCKBURN and JADE WARRIOR, then finish up with DEVOTCHKA and RALPH CARNEY’S SERIOUS JASS PROJECT and voila, the first set is constructed like a Lego piece puzzle of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Next up construct a set around ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ inspired by the 60 Minutes segment on Tony Bennett’s final Radio City performance using tracks from FRANK ZAPPA’S new ‘Zappa 88: The Final U.S. Show’ and an older MX 80 SOUND cover of the same said song, adding other cuts from ALLEN RAVENSTINE, XTC, THE VENTURES, and GENTLE GIANT to round out that set.

Things really kick into gear when the title of a THE MOUNTAIN GOATS song from the new ‘Dark In Here’ album inspires music from PETER LAUGHNER and LOU REED before moving on with CARAVAN, ROBIN TROWER, and PETER HAMMILL and leading to the ‘piece de resistance,’ an entire thirty minutes where I ‘depreciate classical music’ with unusual interpretations of the genre’s most familiar melodies.

It’s hard to believe that we’ve arrived at the beginning of October already as temperatures are getting cooler, the sunsets are earlier each day, and the foliage slowly starts a transition to vibrant colors. On this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #435), there’s plenty of cool ‘musical’ colours in the mix as well beginning with MILES DAVIS’S ‘Electric Red’ to start everything off (thirty years since his passing this week is a marker to how quickly time flies).

Fall arrived on Wednesday afternoon, and as if on cue, the temperature plummeted, the heaven’s opened up, and another deluge of water cascaded from the skies signaling our farewell to summer. All is not as bleak as it seems because on this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #434) I’ve got plenty of great sets to warm your ears and get your feet moving. 

MODEST MOUSE starts it off with another track from their current release, ‘The Golden Casket,’ then THE SLITS, SILVER APPLES, and JUANA MOLINA all set the musical stage before KEN NORDINE weaves the tale of a stranger with ‘Flibberty Jib,’ followed by relatable songs from CRACK THE SKY and GARBAGE’S latest.

That set served as the warm up, so next up there’s another new track from JOHN ZORN’S ‘Chaos Magick,’ then a couple of awesome goodies from HATFIELD & THE NORTH and TOM WAITS, shifting moods with an ALEXANDRE DESPLAT cut from the ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ soundtrack, LAURIE ANDERSON and KRONOS QUARTET’S somber ‘Landfall’ pieces, with MAGAZINE, DAVID LYNCH, and TANGERINE DREAM all added to finish up the first hour. 

Other noteworthy reasons to sit back an enjoy the shows remaining sets include THE BEATLES (an outtake from Sgt. Yesterday marked the end of Yom Kippur (the Jewish ‘Day of Atonement’) so during today’s third set on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #433) I’ll celebrate musically with Klezmer inspired pieces and include three interpretations of JOHN ZORN’S ‘Masada’ songbook from Akron’s own GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET. You’ll also hear music from THE KLEZMATICS, ROTONDI, BRAVE COMBO, the NEW ORLEANS KLEZMER ALL STARS, and several other surprises along the way.

This week marks the 20th anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history so on today's edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #432) I'll remember that day through music during this program's first set as well as my recollection of a concert that same evening by LAURIE ANDERSON that allowed me cope with the tragedy of that day. Surrounding Laurie's song 'Oh Superman (for Massenet)' will be other works from the KRONOS QUARTET, TUNE-YARDS, ALICE COOPER, WAS (NOT WAS), CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, a new track from CRACK THE SKY, and BRIAN ENO (Interpreting Peter Gabriel's 'Mother Of Violence').

The second set will return to my non-theme approach with songs from THE FIREMAN, THE MEKONS, FLO MORRISSEY & MATTHEW E. WHITE, and WILCO, plus more new cuts from MODEST MOUSE AND CARINA MESSIER.

The best made plans of mice and men..'  is the phrase that came to mind while assembling this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #431) as another series of events lead to my postponing of this episode which was scheduled for broadcast last week.  No matter, it's 'water under the bridge' as another phrase goes, so here's part of what the original plans were.

The first set has songs about war as we mark our final removal from Afghanistan with TIN HUEY'S 'Soldier Of Fortune,' MODEST MOUSE'S 'Wooden Soldiers' and other relatable pieces from PATTI SMITH, HAWKWIND, ROY HARPER, STEVE LEHMAN, and MARYAM MURSAL.  

After that themed related set it's back to my usual efforts of blending various genres together over the course of the remaining program.  There's a set in which BRIAN ENO & KARL HYDE are intermixed with the Moroccan band BAB L'BLUZ, YONATAN GAT, SUFJAN STEVENS, the avant garde percussion work of GLENN KOTCHE, the Parisian sounds of BELTUNER, ROBERT WYATT'S crooning, and a work from CARLA BLEY'S masterful ensemble.  

And what would a program be without JOE STRUMMER & THE MESCALEROS, XTC, and THE BEATLES?  Less interesting that's for sure!  There's also more new tracks from THE BREAKERS, CHARLES LLOYD & THE MARVELS, QUETZEL, and Mali guitar virtuoso ANANSY CISSE; 'vault' nuggets from CABARET VOLTAIRE, THE WHO, WHITE NOISE, and OS MUTANTES; plus other great cuts from IRON & WINE, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, and even a song with WILLIE NELSON backed up by DANIEL LANOIS and friends.  The wait is over so set your dials!

This week my initial plans were to air another new episode of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES to finish up the month but unfortunately, as it seems to happen lately, those plans had to change. Instead of pouting I’ve come up with a novel solution to keep everyone smiling by resurrectingmy ‘Pull Up The Covers’ show, (TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES Episode #158) which originally aired on February 26, 2016 over San Francisco Community Radio (SFCR/KUSF-In-Exile). 

And why not? It makes perfect sense to me to pile on the musical blankets during the hottest time of the year, as my liner notes explained during one of the coldest days of the year when the program first aired. On that show I devoted most of the program to ‘covers’ of songs by artists other than the authors who actually penned them. Here some of what you can expect on the program:

You’ll hear MONKS OF DOOM covering the Soft Machine, DEVOTCHKA blanketing The Velvet Underground, Donovan gets tucked in by STEVE HILLAGE, and HELIOS CREED, DAVID BOWIE, and THE FLAMING LIPS (with HENRY ROLLINS) pulling the wool over different Pink Floyd songs. There are also various classical quartets and ensembles (string or otherwise) covering BRIAN ENO, LEONARD BERNSTEIN (from West Side Story), LED ZEPPELIN, and the PIXIES. 

International artists interpret a variety of their mentors ranging from GEOFFREY ORYEMA (Talking Heads), VIEUX FARKA TOURE (U2), and SEU JORGE (David Bowie). JOHNNY CASH even tries his hand at ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ while VASSAR CLEMENTS does a bluegrass rendition of Cream’s ‘White Room.’

Plus original cuts are included from John Cale, Daevid Allen’s Weird Quartet, Captain Beefheart, Stanley Clarke, and Holgar Czukay. It’s fun for the whole dysfunctional family.

Another week has flown by so quickly my head is spinning so to re-establish my inner ear equilibrium this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #430) has quite a few gems littered along the path of musical bliss in store for you from all parts of the world. 

I’ve got new music from the Moroccan band BAB L’BLUZ, followed by a collaboration from Germany’s DISSIDENTEN with Casablanca’s LEM CHALEB, the Spanish rhythm’s of BAHIA BLACK, and Australia’s melodic DEAD CAN DANCE at the start of the program, and several local standouts who will be appearing at Akron’s ‘Highland Square Porchrokr,’ at the finish line. In between there’s plenty to get excited about as well.

Get out your boogie board, grab the SPF 50 sunscreen, spread out that large beach blanket, and open up your favorite thermos that you’ve filled with margarita's as this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #429) catches the hottest musical waves with new (and older as well) surf inspired tracks all gathered together during today’s second set. 

You’ll hear the premiere of ‘Hadrial,’ the latest interpretation of John Zorn’s ‘Masada’ songbook from GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, ‘Egyptian Surf’ from THE BREAKERS recently released ‘Torch Light,’ NEMATOAD (surfing The Stones), THE VENTURES (strumming their classic ‘Walk, Don’t Run’) and COLIN JOHN riding a crest on baby sitar. Plus, in stylistically similar fashion RY COODER channel’s Elvis, the MONKS OF DOOM explore Zappa’s ‘Who Are The Brain Police,’ CHIM KOTARI covers ‘Eleanor Rigby’, and MICHEAL BROOK rounds it all out on infinite guitar.

Stick around because that’s just the tip of the proverbial dorsal fin and there’s a whole pod’s worth of great music throughout today’s festivities. It’s time for another TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #428) and this week I’ll start it all off with PATTI SMITH’S ‘Summer Cannibals,’ add in some ‘Salt Peanuts’ to snack on courtesy of DIZZY GILLESPIE, and surround those pieces with KEN NORDINE, TALL DWARFS, humor from FIRESIGN THEATRE, and swinging cafe music from RAMNE, RICHARD GALLIANO, DEVOTCHKA, and BRAVE COMBO (taking you to ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’).

Get your toes a tappin’ because we’re just getting started. There are plenty of ‘vault’ classics from the likes of ROXY MUSIC (“Do The Strand’), WEATHER REPORT, PETER HAMMILL, and JOHN CALE, ‘covers’ from ASTRALASIA (King Crimson), MCKENDREE SPRING (Neil Young), and NICK CAVE (T.
