This week has extra special significance for the lovers of football, music, and the ones you cherish most as Valentine’s Day, the Superbowl and the 52nd anniversary of rock’s greatest ‘live’ album (The Who ‘Live At Leeds’) all occur so on the latest episode of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #454), I’ll cover all those subjects and then some. 

The Cincinnati Bengals are in the big game so I’ll get things started with SAM SPENCE and one of his classic NFL film themes followed by ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’ interpreted by Cincinnati’s indie rockers the ASS PONIES, before moving into interesting territory where WIRE, another new piece from WET LEG, and vintage tracks from VAN DER GRAAF, PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE, and finally FAUST (who actually utilized power tools that really cemented their reputation as founders of rock’s industrial music fringe) all converge.

The three sets that follow all establish their own sonic landscapes by combining elements of international (TIMBA MM, TOM ZE, WASIS DIOP, MARI KALKUN) jazz (GARY BARTZ, ARTURO O’FARRILL, JONI MITCHELL (from ‘Mingus’)), vault (JOE STRUMMER & THE MESCALEROS, GONG, JOHN RENBOURN GROUP), and the latest releases (JAMES, JAPANESE BREAKFAST, AMYTHYST KIAH).

The final hour honors the legacy of THE WHO ‘Live At Leeds’ which was recorded on February 14, 1970 at the height of the bands unparalleled reputation for muscular, transcending live performances. I’ll approach this segment with interesting background notes about the recording before taking their well known ‘Pinball Wizard’ and deconstructing it with numerous unusual versions of the song from CAMEL, ROGER RUSKIN SPEAR, and THE HILLBENDERS, as well as other relatable tracks from STEREOLAB, HARVEY GOLD, and YELLO before finishing with a song from another ‘Live At Leeds’ recording by JOHN MARTYN recorded exactly five years later.

Neither rain, nor snow, nor freezing rain, nor sleet, nor grapple (grape nut sized snow pellets) can prevent me from completing this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #453). As the temperature plummeted, snow continued to pile up, and driving was treacherous (as well as the walkways) last week, my phone decided to ‘crap out’ and picked the most inconvenient time (Sunday morning) to do it. In an attempt to forge ahead and get a new one, I slipped and jammed my leg against the car door running board, receiving a nice abrasion in the process. Welcome another one of winter’s finest moments. 

Thanks to helpful neighbors the walks were being cleared when I returned from that expedition, so I began the task of repairing my leg, watching the two amazing NFL playoff games that remained, and procrastinated in my attempt to work on this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #452) until late Tuesday night. No matter, the results are well worth waiting for.

Starting everything off is the band LOW, followed by THE POLYPHONIC SPREE, THE MEKONS, MIDNIGHT OIL, ENO & CALE’S masterpiece ‘Spinning Away, before finishing that initial set with PETER GABRIEL and a new track from artist VALERIE JUNE. 

The second set is mostly ‘covers’ as interpreted by CLARK TERRY (the Flintstones theme), VIOLENT FEMMES (the Jetsons), THE ART OF NOISE, DEVO, BILL FRISELL, THE RESIDENTS, and LOS LOBOS doing ‘Bluebird/For What It’s Worth’ from their new album.

New material abounds from JAMES, DRY CLEANING, AMYTHYST KIAH, BIG RED MACHINE, and a never before heard track by GEORGE HARRISON (from the ‘All Things Must Pass 50th box). This weeks edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #451) got started later than I’m accustomed to because of a numbers of extraneous factors ranging from the large weekend snowfall to being unable to remove my derriere from the comfy chair while watching hours of mindless television programming. By the time I came out of my self imposed stupor it was already Tuesday, and I realized I’d better get moving if there was going to be new show this week. 

I’m amazed at how quick the show began to develop starting with the first set. It begins with the latest from the band JAMES followed by vintage CARAVAN, then a track by Camper Van’s JONATHAN SEGEL, LOU REED (from ‘Magic & Loss’), SHADOWFAX (by request), another new cut from ALLEN RAVENSTINE, before finishing with BILL BRUFORD from his ‘Feels Good To Me’ album. (with an Annette Peacock song). 

Satisfied with that first set, the second evolved quickly with THE RESIDENTS, TOM WAITS, the WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND (doing ‘Help I’m A Rock’), EUGENE CHADBOURNE (another request), and several others sonically woven together.

Today’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #450) is another numerical milestone to check off my broadcast list since this show began with it’s current name in late February 2013. It’s quite a feet that I’ve been able to entertain (and annoy) so many friends and listener’s for that long. I can attribute it’s longevity to a number of things but mostly it has (and has always) adapted over time while keeping my basic vision intact even as my actual vision (and handwriting scribble) have gotten worse.

No matter, the show sometimes manages to get it’s initial inspiration from a news story, history or BBC channel documentary, or celebrity passing. This week it was the 5G roll out vs. airplane landing interference that got my brain going so I’ll start the program with LAURIE ANDERSON’S ‘From The Air,’ followed by THE 1900’S ‘Flight Of The Monowings’ and PHIL MANZANERA/801’s rendition of ‘Flight 19,’ before turning Eastward with STATE OF BENGAL, ADRIAN BELEW, SHAKTI, and Gong’s reed player, DIDIER MALHERBE.

As I approach the 450th episode of Transmusic Airwaves to begin airing this Friday At 9 am, I thought it would be kind of fun to look back at my very first program under that name which aired after 43 previous episodes under two other program names way back on February 22, 2013.  Here are the shows program notes and the playlist from this recently unearthed archive gem.  Enjoy!

WHAT?? NOT AGAIN! 
Yes, dear friends, listeners, and occasional musicophiles, I’ve finally (I promise) come up with a name (TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES) and concept that I can proudly submit for your listening approval. Well, the name anyway...the concept (unconventional free form radio) remains the same. The execution of the show will not change. You can expect great seamless segues between varying musical styles, comedy drop ins, spoken word snippets, and TV and movie dialogue.

I have been wrestling for MONTHS with the name issue and thanks to two close friends,  I finally have a shows name that I can live with for a very long time. TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES is pretty simple to understand, don’t you think? 
I’ve been back on the air courtesy of SFCR (San Francisco Community Radio)/KUSF-in-Exile for 10 months now. Today is the first episode as TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES, but the 44th episode since my return to full time radio on April 27, 2012.  On today's program, I’ll let everything start with Henry Mancini and his Orchestra, then add some San Francisco psychedelic musings with Fever Tree, and into the new Camper Van Beethoven (“Northern California Girls”), followed by Duke Ellington, a trip to an Ohio convenience store called “Lawson’s,” and other surprises. 

New offerings from Divine Fits, Leonard Cohen, Badly Drawn Boy, and Fiona Apple will be played along with the more familiar BEATLES, and less familiar PEG LEG SAM.  An entire, slightly twisted set about “farmers” will cover about 45 minutes of today’s program.  Robert Wyatt begins it off with a duet with Brian Eno (“Heaps of Sheep”), followed by a piece from the Original Cast recording of OKLAHOMA, then dialogue from “The Big Lebowski” is mixed with more music from Little Feat, The Residents, Pink Floyd, and the NRBQ. Oh and Clint Eastwood sings “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds” from the TV series “Rawhide.” 
That sure beats watching Guinea Pigs driving little cars to mindless trip hop music, doesn’t it?

Season’s Greeting and Happy Holly Daze!

Well it’s finally arrived, that dreaded week where predictable Christmas muzak propagates the entertainment airwaves and there aren’t enough throw pillows around to bury your head in while yelling PLEASE MAKE IT STOP! 

I’ve got just the solution for everyone and it comes from someone who truly loathes all the sappy musical excrement that is deposited everywhere you go that your ears are forced to ‘step in’ this time of year. The solution that I am of course speaking of, is myself and my warped sense of Christmas music that you can hear during my 10th Annual Christmas Special on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #447) which can be heard a day earlier beginning Thursday, December 23 at 9:00 am.

Let’s face it folks, where else can you hear a set of holiday music that begins with the BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA (with MAVIS STAPLES) and ends with KLAUS NOMI? ‘Twas the week before the night before...’awe come on! There’s plenty of time left before I unleash my warped sense of Christmas music on your earlobes so this week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #446) I’ll go onto other things including remembering one of Akron’s most beloved musical treasures, RALPH CARNEY. Ralph left a hole in the hearts of everyone he knew with his passing in 2017, so during the course of today’s show I’ll play several of his solo pieces as well as his work in projects with less familiar groups like THE ALL ONES and CARNEYBALL JOHNSON. 

The first set begins with RALPH CARNEY’S SERIOUS JASS PROJECT followed by the big band jazz of ARTURO O’FARRILL, NICK MASON’S FICTITIOUS SPORTS (with Carla Bley & Robert Wyatt singing about spaceships), GONG, ANI DEFRANCO, and JULIE DYBLE & ANDY LEWIS covering Nick Drake’s ‘Northern Sky.’ 

Another great new track from the band LOW starts off the second set, followed by THE CLASH, ALLEN RAVENSTINE. OSAMU KITAJIMA, WU FEI & ABIGAIL WASHBURN, JAN HAMMER & JERRY GOODMAN, and Louisiana folk artist GINA FORSYTH. 

There’s Bossa Nova like melodies from JOE PASS, BUSTER POINDEXTER (crooning Disney’s ‘Castles In Spain’), RALPH CARNEY, OS MUTANTES, and even a Tex-Mex take on it from CALEXICO during the third set.   Add all those selections in with other music from TELEK and CODE SANGALA (world), JADE WARRIOR, BRIAN ENO, and GEORGE HARRISON (vault), and BRIAN SANDS and SAD PLANETS (local) and you’ve got quite a show assembled.
