On this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #463), you’ll hear plenty of old friends from the ‘vault,’ more new tracks from my latest musical finds, plus a range of international styles, and even an attempt to overlay a classic cut into one of those new pieces showing how similar the song structures are in the process. 

In the old friends department I’ve got HORSLIPS, KEVIN AYERS, DAEVID ALLEN, JIMI HENDRIX, and MUDDY WATERS lined up back to back during the second set surrounded by the PUNCH BROTHERS and CRACKER on each end. WES MONTGOMERY covers a Mary Poppins tune and MORT GARSON does the same with Hair’s ‘Good Morning Starshine’ plus there’s more classics from THE TRASHMEN, GENESIS (from ‘Lamb’), KEN NORDINE, and GURU GURU.

Indie bands BUTTHOLE SURFERS, ASHTRAY BOY, and GANG OF FOUR provide added flavor to today’s mix, with international artists OLIVER MTUKUDZI, JUANA MOLINA, and DENGUE FEVER offered as well. The latest releases from EELS, BEIRUT, ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, and FREQ OUT also make appearances today. 

And what about incorporating that classic track into a new piece as mentioned earlier? Hint: It involves the middle portion of CURVED AIR’S ‘Metamorphosis’ and a track from KLO PELGAG’S new release. 

To top everything off, I’ll finish the show with THE NUMBERS BAND (15-60-75) and the track ‘Risk Of Love’ which you can find, newly remastered, on their album ‘20,’ on their website. Oh, yeah and go see them at Jilly’s on Saturday while you’re at it. I will!

This weekend signals the beginning of Passover and the conclusion of Easter festivities so during today’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #462), you’ll hear relatable music throughout the program all loosely tied together by a different track during each set from everybody’s favorite psychedelic surf/John Zorn Masada songbook inspired band, the GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, including the international debut of their latest piece, ‘Mehalalel’ during the shows fourth set.

The Golems previous offering, ‘Paschar Tzofeh,’ is their first piece played and it’s surrounded by other tracks from BRIAN ENO & DAVID BYRNE, Mali’s TINARIWEN, DEVOTCHKA, LUMINESCENT ORCHESTRII, and newly unearthed pieces from FRANK ZAPPA’S 200 Motels (50th anniversary box set) during the opening set.

Inspiration can come from many sources and for those of you who know how I operate, it, at it’s core, is what drives this weekly program. 

One source who’s always inspired my creative juices is multimedia artist, composer, and innovator LAURIE ANDERSON, who just last week was profiled on 60 Minutes so I thought I’d get my latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #461) going by incorporating three lesser known pieces from her ‘Big Science’ album into the programs first set. Surrounding those melodies are songs from ROBERT WYATT, SKY CRIES MARY, NICK DRAKE, CARAVAN, and a brand new offering from the band BEIRUT. 

There’s a ‘mountain’ of new material, ‘vault’ gems, and delicious musical soundscapes assembled throughout the shows remaining sets today. This week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #460) signifies the start of another new month (as I put my hand up to my nose and wiggle it, saying good riddance to March) and with it, the second week of my new noon program premiere slot. So how did that work out last week? I was still ten minutes late getting the show released. This week I actually thought I’d have to grab another show from the archive because of that most dreaded element that anyone even vaguely creative stumbles upon; writers block (or in my case music indecision). 

By Monday I had a wonderful first set assembled with music from FRED FRITH, KLO PELGAG, JESCA HOOP, HANNE HUKKELBERG, RALPH CARNEY, THE MARCH FOURTH MARCHING BAND, CALIFONE, MAPS & ATLASES, and the PENGUIN CAFE ORCHESTRA all lined up and then...48 hours of frustration followed. I spent the remainder of Monday and most of Tuesday trying in vain to forcefully surround the artist I picked to start the second set with other selections until I finally replaced him with the DAVID PIKE SET covering ‘Mother People’ and voila, the music flowed effortlessly once again. 

The Dave Pike Set anchors that set followed by songs from PRIMUS, SPARKS, GONG, THE KINKS, and several others before concluding with a track from David Bromberg and Vassar Clements’ HILLBILLY JAZZ collaboration.

After nearly a decade I’ve finally decided that it’s time to give myself more time to produce my weekly freeform radio program so beginning with today’s latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #459), each show, from now on, will be released at NOON every Friday. This came about more from necessity than anything else as lately I’ve been unable to get everything completed in post-production without literally killing myself and as my routines changed, these extra hours will allow the process to become a little less STRESSFUL.

Over the last decade, I’ve celebrated various milestones on this program and today’s show, TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #457) represents a very significant one. Today marks my 500th radio episode since returning to radio in 2012 after a couple of decades away from the medium. 

In the mid-1970’s my career began at WKSU-FM, the Kent State University public radio outlet, doing a freeform/progressive format called Fresh Air. as well as jazz and folk programming. I departed Ohio in 1981 and worked in an entirely different field and by the end of the 80’s began volunteering at WGTD-FM in Kenosha, Wisconsin. My old friend and WKSU alumni Chuck Ruby was the General Manager there and he lured me back to do a half hour program specializing in soundtracks on a part time basis that lasted about a year.

In 2012 I was approached by another WKSU alumni, Bryan Chandler, about doing a show for an internet based radio station he worked at, San Francisco’s SFCR/KUSF In Exile. After five years there (and three program name changes) I began doing the current show independently. So here we are!

Today I’ll play many of my favorite artists and albums including BRIAN ENO, THE BEATLES, DEVO, HARRY PARTCH, AUDIENCE, ROBERT WYATT, and LAURIE ANDERSON to name a few. I’ve got film soundtracks from BERNARD HERMANN and THOMAS NEWMAN (WALL-E), international tracks from D’GARY and JUANA MOLINA, and even comedy bits from NATIONAL LAMPOON an FIRESIGN THEATRE. I’ll start off by saluting the Ukrainian people with GONG’S ‘You Can’t Kill Me,’ plus 10CC, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, and PINK FLOYD, with other music from CORNELIUS, BRYAN SCARY, and SKY CRIES MARY.

Thank god the final days of February are coming to a close. This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES I’ve decided to take a short break from producing a new program and instead will play another excerpt from the groundbreaking freeform college radio program, FRESH AIR, recorded on tape by a listener on January 17, 1980. 

I was a host on the Thursday night/Friday morning edition of WKSU-FM's "Fresh Air," the late night, freeform/progressive radio show during one of the most prolific periods in Northeastern Ohio musical history. The area had gained a national and international reputation for it’s groundbreaking work in exposing enthusiastic audiences to an array musical acts in the 1970's and 80's. Today's tape, restored and remastered, comes from an archive of over 400 hours of listener (and programmer) recordings from 1975 to 1981.

The show open’s with elements of spoken word, song, and comedy featuring PORTSMOUTH SINFONIA, LORD BUCKLEY, BONZO DOG BAND, FIRESIGN THEATRE, and JONATHAN RICHMAN & THE MODERN LOVERS in honor of one of the show’s former hosts. Later on there are segments where I use a track from TANGERINE DREAM and mix it in with Marlon Brando’s dialogue from ‘Apocalypse Now’ and FRIPP & ENO’S ‘Evening Star’ gets combined with LOUISE HUBNER’S ‘Seduction Through Witchcraft’ album, creating atmospheric landscapes of late night audio bliss. Other music heard tonight includes cuts from ALICE COLTRANE, CAN, LE ORME, LED ZEPPELIN, SHAWN PHILLIPS, PINK FLOYD, and THE RESIDENTS.
