Sheesh! Another week has already flown by and we’ve nearly reached the midpoint of yet another month so it’s time to describe what’s in store on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #478). 

I had a hankering for some music with sitar in it as I began assembling the show so I’ll start off with some vintage OREGON (Colin Walcott using it) and include COLIN JOHN (on electric sitar), the WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND, and OKKO BEKKER (covering The Beatles) and incorporate other music from RHIANNON GIDDENS & DANIEL LANOIS, THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM, and THE FLAMING LIPS to round everything out.

From there on out it’s ‘expect the unexpected’ with new music from KENDRICK LAMAR, OUTRONAUT, THE SMILE, and DAVID BOWIE, ‘covers’ from SUDAN ARCHIVES (Yoko Ono), TURTLE ISLAND STRING QUARTET (Jimi Hendrix), and MIKE BATT (Dueling Banjos on Moog synthesizer), and ‘vault’ treasures from HOT TUNA, EUGENIO FINARDI, JOHN GREAVES (Kew Rhone), and BO HANSSON.

In addition to all that there’s international cuts from HABIB KOITE, and CHLOPCY KONTRA BASIA, local fair from THE BEYONDERERS and PERE UBU, and other great pieces from IMOGEN HEAP, BELA FLECK, and LAURIE ANDERSON (the later channeling Dolly Parton).

This week’s first set on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #477) took it’s inspiration from a cartoon character’s fictional birthday, the passing of a groundbreaking television actress, and a new concert announcement that will feature Ohio bred musicians raising money for veterans.

The program begins with HOYT CURTIN 'Jetsons Theme,’ celebrating George Jetsons birthday (7/31/2022) and is followed by several ‘Star Trek’ inspired pieces by SPIRIT, in honor of the legacy of Nichelle Nichols, Lieutenant Uhuru of that famous TV series, who passed away several days ago. DAVID BYRNE & YO LA TENGO ‘cover’ Yoko Ono and members of the MONKS OF DOOM ‘cover’ John Fahey before THE BREEDERS (one of the four Ohio bands appearing in concert) play ‘Space Woman’ followed by NINE INCH NAILS, THE JAMES GANG, and THE BLACK KEYS.

It was lots of fun assembling that first set but even more rewarding putting together the remaining two and a half hours. Every week I complete an exercise in prose in an attempt to entice you into tuning in to my latest broadcast and like previous attempts, this week is no different. On this extra special 'rewind' edition of Transmusic Airwaves I'm extracting from my archives the long hidden very first 'Character Study,' that of legendary artist Kevin Ayers, which debuted on Episode #3 on March 8, 2013, three weeks after his passing.  Now after nearly a decade, it is available once again for your enjoyment.  Below is the synopsis and playlist from this program. Today on the 3rd installment of Transmusic Airwaves and I’ll be DEBUTING a new segment within the show called “Character Study,” a monthly feature that devotes two hours to an artist or band that has made significant contributions to the world of modern music.

In today’s premiere, a look at the life and music of legendary songwriter KEVIN AYERS.  Ayers who was  a cornerstone in the British Psychedelic movement and it’s progressive offshoot, “The Canterbury Scene,” was a gifted modern troubadour, who passed away on February 18, 2013.  

This feature will include music from his work in the groundbreaking bands Wildeflowers and Soft Machine, his rather sizable solo output (including rare live recordings from his numerous BBC sessions, hard to get studio recordings, and other goodies), and will be interspersed with biographical information about his life. This “Character Study” will be aired in the final two hours of today’s show.

Each week as I prepare to get going on another upcoming show, a new release, movie or TV show, event, or person can serve as an inspiration to get the creative juices flowing and on this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #475 ) it was a combination of those elements that played out. Upon learning of the passing of Monty Newman, the composer of perhaps the world’s most recognizable spy movie theme (James Bond) I decided to incorporate that theme with other spy music themes interpreted by a variety of artists during today’s first set.

The program begins with the new offering by THE SMILE (featuring members of Radiohead), then tracks by MODEST MOUSE and SLAPP HAPPY, before transitioning into Bond-like themes from PROPELLERHEADS, BOB CRANE & HIS ORCHESTRA (Get Smart), THE SURF CHAMPLERS (Bond), ORANJ SYMPHONETTE (The Pink Panther), and THE VENTURES (Secret Agent Man). A Special 'Tuesday Rewind' from the Archives is today's selection for July 19, 2022 as I am releasing my '4th Anniversary Show' of Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #174) from July 29, 2016.  Here's the details:

Boy oh boy, I’ve been at it so long now that I’ve almost let an important anniversary date slip by that commemorates my return to radio. In the case of today’s program, TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#174), I nearly forgot that this show marks the start of my fourth year at SFCR/KUSF-in-Exile. That realization came about midway through today’s program and as a result, I’ve decided to “double down” on some of the things that make this show what it is.

There’s plenty of music from the “vault” today including pieces from The Grateful Dead, Gil Scott Heron, Snakefinger, Tin Huey, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Lene Lovich, and Parasites of the Western World.

History was made this week as the James Webb Space Telescope sent back it’s first photos with clarity and depth, allowing us to gaze further back in time towards the origin of the universe so on this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #474) I’ll dedicate an entire set to that monumental achievement. You’ll hear music from DONOVAN, HAWKWIND, PRIMAL SCREAM, THOMAS NEWMAN (from Wall-E), LEONARD NIMOY, GONG, and several others to begin the programs final hour.

There’s plenty of other ‘goodies’ to get to beforehand, including my usual preferences of ‘vault’ material, new releases, and ‘worldly’ music from far and wide.

It's vacation time folks so this week I've decided to forgo another new program and instead, resurrect an early program from my first year back into radio with the program 'Vicotin Popsicle's'. Today I've selected ' Episode #16 which initially aired on August 10, 2012 over San Francisco internet radio station KUSF-In-Exile on a Friday morning from 6-9 AM (PST).

Themed sets, cartoon and movie dialogue, spoken word, and a variety of musical styles all melded together into the early shows during this time period as I was finding my way and honing my skills along the way. Below is a synopsis of the program as it appeared in 2012. Enjoy!!!
 
On today’s three hour edition there's newly released music from The Flaming Lips, Sigur Ros, and Garbage; plus several themes including Bugs Bunny’s dialogue from the classic “Long Haired Hare" (LEOPOLD..LEOPOLD...Leopold..) cartoon blended together with rare vault finds and an orchestral gem from Fantasia.
