It’s time once again for another weekly edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES and today it’s Episode #472 with the usual, unusual suspects all assembled into six sets, each with their own unique attributes of diverse musical styles. It’s an adventure for your ears where at every turn I hope to surprise you, bring a smile to your face, and have readily receptive to what might be forthcoming as the program progresses. 

Here’s a smattering of what to expect this week. I’ll start off with DEERHOOF from ‘Apple O’ followed by a new cut from KING GIZZARD & THE WIZARD LIZARD, then Japan’s quirky power trio SHONEN KNIFE, the lounge styling's of ESQUIVEL, more edgy mischief from Japan with KARIN and CORNELIUS, JACK WHITE (riffing on Cab Calloway) from his latest, CHRISTI HAYDEN (covering ‘Boris The Spider’), and KRAFTWERK doing another classic cut from their latest ‘Remixes.’

I’ve got interesting ‘covers’ from OKKO BEKKER (playing The Beatles on sitar and synthesizer), ELADES OCHOA (Bob Dylan), and FRED FRITH (‘Dancing In The Street’), new recordings from CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE (acoustic blues), NDUDUZO MAKHATHINI (Cape Town jazz), and local musician MARK ALLENDER, ‘vault’ finds from LIQUID SOUND COMPANY, TOM RAPP, and VINCE GUARALDI, and a whole lot of other goodies like XTC, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, PHIL MANZANERA, and JEAN LUC PONTY. 

It’s another show well worth your listening investment.

These are the days one dreams about when it’s near zero and snowing in late January so I’ll always take heat over freezing for my old bones and enjoy this week’s weather. (it doesn’t hurt to have AC either, as the days of sitting in front of a fan while suffocating inside my home as some of my siblings still do have long since passed for moi). Have said that, I’ve got plenty of great music to chill out to on this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #471) and prepare you for the gorgeous days ahead.

I’ll start off with TAJ MAHAL and his collaborators, RY & JOACHIM COODER doing ‘Hooray, Hooray’ from their new ‘Get On Board’ release and follow it with JIM WHITE’S ‘Wrong Kind Of Love,’ KEN NORDINE & TOM WAITS’ word poem ‘A Thousand Bing Bangs,’ then head off for other sonically interesting pieces from L. VOAG, DAMON ALBARN, THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, DANNY ELFMAN, and a hard to find 10CC classic.

The next thirty minutes bring more new material from ROKIA KONE & JACKNIFE LEE, two ‘vault’ masterpieces from JOHN MARTYN and LED ZEPPELIN followed by THE MEKONS, PJ HARVEY, DAEVID ALLEN, and a MARK MOTHERSBAUGH percussion piece all that seamlessly flow into a new BLACK KEYS track.

They say that eventually as you age you become more like your parents and if that’s the case, then I’ve become more like mom especially when it comes to her obsession with all things maple. Lately it’s been maple frosted cinnamon rolls (mom had issues with maple cremes and every box of assorted chocolate candies would have her tell tale marks where she had jammed her thumb into each piece in attempt to locate her confectionery treasures).

“Myopia” multimedia exhibit at the Akron Art Museum this past weekend helped in the creative
process.

So what’s in store as a result you ask?  Devo’s “Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA” starts off the show and
afterwards you’ll hear from Holgar Czukay, Richard & Linda Thompson, traditional music from Greece &
Tibesti (Chad), Sonic Youth, PFM, the latest from Brian Eno and each of the Kidney brothers releases,

Another week has flown by so as I prepare you for yet another synopsis of what’s in store for the show I just completed working on (TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES Episode #467) I began wondering about that existential element (time) and how it’s changed since the fourth grade when I would sit in study hall during the moments before my next period (lunch or otherwise) and watch those clock hands click by, second by second, for what always seemed like eternity only to be snapped back to attention to the tasks at hand by a nun’s ruler across my knuckles. 

Now, in my later years, it’s ‘Oh crap, where did the day go’ as each day draws me closer to the final ones. Life is really not fair, it’s just inevitable.

Now that you’ve heard what the voices in my head have to say, here’s what to expect musically from the forthcoming program. In the ‘new’ release category I’ve got JACK WHITE, CALEXICO, SONIC YOUTH, and the multicultural group, MONOSWEZI, whose members hail from Mozambique, Norway, Sweden, and Zimbabwe. Still new but slightly older are THE BREAKERS, IMARHAN, ROBERT PLANT & ALLISON KRAUSE, DAMON ALBARN, and Uniontown’s own FREQ OUT.

From the ‘vault’ there’s very early SOFT MACHINE, plus MIROSLAV VITOUS, THE LAST POETS, HAPPY THE MAN, SYD BARRETT, and GEORGE HARRISON (Wonderwall Music). Slightly younger (weren’t we all once?) there’s HARVEY GOLD, SIGUR ROS, CRACKER, THE SHINS, and ENO & HYDE. The show was scheduled for noon on Friday and was late. This week’s airing of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #466) debuts on Friday the thirteenth and as luck would have it, I didn’t realize until I began writing the description for this show that I had already programmed two versions of the ‘Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic ‘I Put A Spell On You’ (interpreted by BRYAN FERRY and AUDIENCE) during the programs first set. This week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #464) marks our annual transition into May, so on today’s program I’ll look back at one of the most pivotal moments in modern American history, the shooting of unarmed students protesting the Vietnam war at Kent State on May 4, 1970 and incorporate music from local artists who were affected by that event with other songs as part of today’s programming. 

The show begins with WILCO playing ‘War On War’ followed by THE LEAVES doing ‘War Of Destruction,’ then songs from JOE WALSH, DALA (doing ‘Ohio’), MODERN NATURE, MARTIN CARTHY & DAVE SWARBRICK, and PATTI SMITH’S anthem ‘Gandhi.’ Later on there’s music from CHRIS BUTLER, DEVO, and GLASS HARP all interspersed throughout other sets.

Other programming notes today include a set that transitions from Native American themes into Nordic elements with music from JOHN TRUDELL, Canada’s Inuit band TUDJAAT, Norway’s SKUGGSJA, and Finland’s WIMME.
