This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #444) Ill pay tribute to the new BEATLES documentary, honor the legacy of STEPHEN SONDHEIM, play a series of songs about love and office work, and add music with themes about space and having the blues all assembled into my usual three hour free form adventure.

DEERHOOF, PAVEMENT, CRACKER, and PALBERTA all get installed around other music from JUKKA TOLONEN, CHI-PIG, MAGAZINE, and PETER HAMMILL resulting in the program’s first set today.

The second set combines jazz (JOHN ZORN, GILGAMESH, and ARTURO O’FARRILL), ethnic (ISSA BAGAYOGO), electronic (ALLEN RAVENSTINE), and film scores (ALEXANDRE DESPLAT and STEPHEN SONDHEIM) with another song about a film from SUFJAN STEPHEN & ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE. 

During the fourth set, I’ll pay homage to THE BEATLES with ‘covers’ of their music from WILLIE NELSON, THE RESIDENTS, BILL WITHERS, and THE RUBY SUNS, surrounded by other music from LOW, FAUST, NAYTRONIX, ANDY PARTRIDGE, and JON BATISTE. 

Plus there’s blues from ALBERT COLLINS and KEN NORDINE, bluegrass from BELA FLECK, new wave from GANG OF FOUR, and unusual melodies from HARRY PARTCH, BRUCE COCKBURN, and CAL HAND. Much assembly was required!

Today’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #443) happens to fall on the busiest shopping day of the year, ‘Black Friday,’ although marketing geniuses over the past decade have morphed that day into nearly a week by adding ‘Small Business Saturday,’ ‘Cyber-Monday’ and ‘Giving Tuesday’ in an attempt to relieve all of you of any remaining cash you’ve been struggling to hold on to for the past year. 

And don’t forget to shove another ‘Record Store Day’ in that mix because the one in April isn’t enough, and one should always save room for music (much like pie) when you’ve stuffed yourselves to the gills with everything else.

Which brings me to the point (finally, thank god) of that whole diatribe above. You’re gonna need great music to get you through this marathon so here’s three hours worth to sooth, distract, and motivate you along during your shopping journey. 

During the first hour there’s vintage tracks from NINO ROTA, JIM HENDRIX, MOONDOG, and yes, THE MONKEES (from their psychedelic album, ‘Head’), mixed together with ‘covers’ from PATTI SMITH (The Doors) and BROTHER CLEVE’S LUSH ORCHESTRA (Henry Mancini) and other music from BUTTHOLE SURFERS, DEERHOOF, VIOLENT FEMMES, NAYTRONIX, and ALLEN RAVENSTINE.

By the fourth set I’ll take ‘Sari’(Nordic) and Native American chants from WIMME, MARI BOINE, SACRED SPIRIT, and JIM PEPPER and sonically incorporate them around music from PINK FLOYD and ROBBIE ROBERTSON, then a little later I’ll gather NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, RY COODER, THE NEUTRONS, and POKEY LAFARGE around another musical table who’s centerpiece will be ROBERT WYATT’S ‘Soup Song.”

It’ll be loads of fun and sure beats snoring on the ‘lazy boy’ in front of something on TV you’re not watching.

This week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #440) begins with a track from DEERHOOF’S latest release, ‘Actually, You Can’ followed by another piece from the new JOHN ZORN album, ‘Nostradamus, The Death Of Satan.’ Now that the tone has been set, I’ll honor the late founder of THE CHIEFTAINS, Paddy Maloney, with the song ‘Dunmore Lassies’ (which also features RY COODER), then offer your ears music from RHIANNON GIDDENS, the Finnish folk band VARTTINA, a DAEVID ALLEN sonnet, before finally turning to SPIRIT for ‘Nothing To Hide’ and WILCO’S ‘Wishful Thinking.’

Have I gotten your attention yet? Perhaps you need a few more names for encouragement. TIN HUEY, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD, AMON DUUL II, TODD RUNDGREN, the PHILIP GLASS ENSEMBLE, and ROXY MUSIC. All of those signify just part of today’s first half of the program.

Midnight IS ‘the bewitching hour’ so to mark this years 10th anniversary HALLOWEEN SPECIAL on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #439) I’ve released the program at 12:01 am. Friday, October 29, 2021. 

Getting the show started is the main title to ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ followed by NORMA TANEGA’S ‘You’re Dead,’ the theme to TV’s vampire mockumentary, ‘What We Do In The Shadows.’ Following that is PETER HAMMILL with ‘Energy Vampires’ and we’re off, running and screaming, for three more hours of HALLOWEEN madness.

This year has plenty of goodies sprinkled throughout the show including music surrounding dialogue from ‘The Shining’ and ‘Night Of The Living Dead,’ early 60’s horror movie radio spots, and tracks from new releases by COLIN JOHN, SUFJAN STEVENS & ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE, GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, GARBAGE, THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, and JOHN ZORN’S Nostradamus’ album.

I’ve got plenty of nasty bits to quench every vampires blood-lust including THE BREAKERS just released ‘Tubular Bells’ (The Exorcist Theme) during the third set surrounded by MIKE OLDFIELD’S 2003 rendition of his signature tune, as well as BRAVE COMBO and LUNA LEE’S own take on the melody. Surrounding them is music from JOHN HARDIN, RANDOM HOLD, and the LOS STRAITJACKETS surf inspired ‘Munster’s’ cover. 

And what would Halloween be without ALICE COOPER’S ‘I Love The Dead,’ VIOLENT FEMMES ‘Country Death Song,’ and other nefarious oddities from IGGY POP, TOM WAITS, THE CRAMPS, JOHN CARPENTER, and PERE UBU. Nearly every week for nine years I’ve assembled an episode of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (this week it’s Episode #437) and each week I attempt to describe to you what you’ll hear for that show in hopes of enticing you to listen. Sounds relatively easy doesn’t it? Actually, some days it’s harder than actually assembling the show itself and my formula always seems to return to giving you a list of new releases, ‘vault’ selections, local artists, and genre or musical styles that’s in store for the week.

 ‘To boldly go where no man has gone before’ is the phrase that for many ‘boomers’ recalls a childhood memory of 60’s television that can only mean one thing, WILLIAM SHATNER’S iconic portrayal of Captain Kirk in the groundbreaking sci-fi series, ‘Star Trek.’ 

This week the ninety year old TV star made history by becoming the oldest person ever to go into space so on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #436), I’ll mark that monumental achievement by devoting today’s second set to his accomplishment by combining music (including a track from an early album of his attempt at ‘singing’) with dialogue from his memoir, ‘Shatner Rules,’ and his immediate reaction to that experience upon returning to terra firma after the flight.

You’ll hear other cuts by artists DONOVAN, HAWKWIND, PHILLIP GLASS, GONG, NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE and a couple of other surprises during that set all guaranteed to make this program a must listen! But that doesn’t even come close to describing what’s in store for the remaining two and a half hours today.
