Transmusic Airwaves

In place of this week's regular program due to the international pandemic, I have released an early Transmusic Airwaves archival program (Episode #4) from March 15, 2013 featuring a celebration of St. Patrick's Day and other drinking songs. As Eric Straton said to Flounder in Animal House 'My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.' (That and cover yourself in Purell twice a day). Below is the description for this program transcribed at the time of it's release. Enjoy!

March Madness arrives on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES! No not the college basketball classic, it’s the St. Patrick Day madness that engulfs Chicago and other cities where once a year ordinary heathens become “Irish’ in name only and use that as an excuse to get “snookered” out of their minds.
It’s a great reason to play a series of songs about drinking and mix them in with excerpts from the Looney Tunes 1945 cartoon classic, “Trapp Happy Porky.” (That’s where our hero, Porky, gets to deal with his drunken cats singing at all hours of the night). Music from the DUBLINER’S, TOM WAITS, THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND, BOB WILLS, SHAKIN’ PICKLE, and the RAMONES will be heard as part of this little feature during the last two sets today.
Also in store musically, current recordings from TOY, Eels, Pere Ubu, Guided by Voices, Maps & Atlases, Bjork, and a few “vault” rarities from the likes of Roland Boquet, The Rising Storm, and Nina Rota.

Northeastern Ohio takes center stage this week on the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #360) as I'll have several irons in the fire by premiering new songs from local artists and celebrating the first annual AKRON MUSIC AWARDS during various parts of the program.

It all begins with 'Red Stick,' a new track from the just released album 'Endure: Outliers On Water Street' by 15-60-75 THE NUMBERS BAND, in a set that includes other new cuts from local surf provocateurs GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, Chicago's dynamic indie alt cult band CALIFONE, and a duet from AMY ALLISON & ELVIS COSTELLO (honoring Amy's father, Mose Allison). For added measure, there's songs about otherworldly alien sightings from Akron Music Award's first place recipient THE BEYONDERERS and legendary rockabilly vocalist ROBERT GORDON.

During the half hour that follows you'll hear the latest from LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE, 808 STATE, and MARK GUILIANA all blended seamlessly into psychedelic tones from TRANQUILITY BASS and New Zealand's TALL DWARFS, before finishing with another Akron Music Award recipient, FANCY LEGS and a thundering number from CRACKER. And that's only the first hour my dear listener's!

Grab your chairs and crank the volume up as later on you'll hear the premiere of CHRIS BUTLER'S election year anthem 'Gotta Vote Him Out' surrounded by a new 'live' rendition of BRYAN FERRY covering 'The In Crowd,' the latest work by THE LONE BELLOW, FRED FRITH'S interpretation of 'Dancing In The Streets,' and a classic XTC song.

This week's edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #359) has new songs from RAVI SHANKAR'S posthumous opera, 'Sukanya,' THE RESIDENTS 'Intruders' and SUDAN ARCHIVES 'Athena' releases, CALIFONE'S first release in seven years, and a track from 808 STATE'S long awaited 'Transmission Suite' as well as another spectacular effort from LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE all scattered throughout today's three hour show.

You're probably wondering what's in store on the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #358) as I prepare to release another weekly program? Well there's plenty of new releases, old friends from the 'vault,' an homage to several artists who've departed us, and a quirky set or two lined up in my latest program. Here's a brief synopsis of what to expect.

Milestones and kidney stones, I've had them all (and I'll take milestones every time over those other painful ones) so on this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #357) I'll celebrate the former as I've reached the 400th broadcast overall since returning to radio in 2012. During 2012 I was lured back into radio (having been a broadcaster during the mid-70's at Kent State's WKSU-FM) by a friend working at San Francisco internet radio station KUSF-in-Exile run by former DJ's of the bay area's legendary KUSF. I produced 43 episodes under two previous names before settling on 'Transmusic Airwaves' in March 2013.

So today I'll celebrate this achievement with plenty of 'vault' selections, new tracks, occasional 'covers,' and unusual themes. It all begins with the SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND mainstay, 'The Faith Healer,' in a set which includes music from WILCO, ANGELIQUE KIDJO, KING CRIMSON, THE WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND, and JIM WHITE.

This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #356) I've got plenty of cool music to interest your ears including the 'World Premiere' of the song “Hazor,' done by GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, a band of local musicians dedicated to exploring John Zorn's 'Masada' songbook. The band comprised of Harvey Gold (guitar), Mark Allender (bass), Bob Ethington (drums), and Matt Reese (cello) has graciously given me a copy of their new track which I'll air during the final set of today's show.. It's a killer piece folks, and fits well along side the Nordic electronica/folk band VALRAVN, NENEH CHERRY, and Algerian Berber songstress SOUAD MASSI.

So what other sorts of things can you expect from this old DJ today you ask? There's plenty of 'vault' selections including early PERE UBU, early CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, and early SOFT MACHINE to start the second set, plus more 'oldies' from TANGERINE DREAM, THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION, SOPWITH CAMEL, and YUSEF LATEEF.

I can't believe how quickly the first month of this year has flown by. It's been one giant blur to me as I look back at the past thirty days but as this year progresses, there's plenty to celebrate. The NUMBERS BAND (15-60-75) commemorates their 50th anniversary in 2020 so on today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #355) I'll begin the show with the song, 'Narrow Road' from their 'Jimmy Bell's Still In Town' album and follow that with another local favorite, TIN HUEY, before moving to other great music from TRILOK GURTU, DAMON ALBARN, SOUAD MASSI, and singer PAPA WEMBA all during the first thirty minutes.

Then I've got the latest from WIRE, ANGEL OLSEN, JUANA MOLINA, CHRISSIE HYNDE, and NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS blended in with AMON DUUL II, LAURIE ANDERSON, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, and a new, solo piano piece by Sufjan Stevens, performed by TIMO ANDRES to round out the first hour.

As yet another year begins I find myself a year older, and although the 'wiser' part seems to become less of a factor, more determined to enjoy my life a little bit more. There's plenty of resolutions I'm prepared to break, plenty of 'plant based meat like' products I'm likely to avoid, and plenty of great music I hope to continue to discover, re-discover, and play. This week I'll explore more of the later on another TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #352), my weekly foray into the realm of 'freeform' radio that I've been noodling with for nearly eight years.

Pouring over my many sources for great music, I discovered several artists that piqued my interest this week. There's the TRANSIT KINGS (featuring Guy Pratt & Dom Beken of Nick Mason's current band), SHPONGLE (psychedelic electronica), ARCANA (Bill Laswell & friends), an obscure 70's songwriter named ARTHUR GEE, and a cut by GALAXIE 500 (with Luna's Dean Wareham accompanied by local sax legend RALPH CARNEY) that I've settled on.

BE BOP DELUXE has reissued their 'Modern Music' album with a stunning new stereo remix so I'll add songs from that release to a set with some classic GONG (In honor of Daevid Allen's birthday), JAN HAMMER & JERRY GOODMAN, more new DANIEL LANOIS, ETHNIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE, and a piece by the BOB BROZMAN ORCHESTRA.
