On this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #340) I'll celebrate two great upcoming concerts on tap at the Kent Stage, add an entire set of NEW releases to an ever expanding list of recent acquisitions, and get 'religion' so to speak with a legendary 'vault' offering (Get it? Offering!) from radio's distant past. Please tell us more, the aggravated congregation bellowed, because it sure beats watching the rapture unfold on the news.

Things will start off with RICHARD THOMPSON'S 'I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight' (he appears at the Kent Stage on Monday) and what follows includes three new releases from ROBBIE ROBERTSON, WILCO, and ALPHA CAT. By the third set it's time for all NEW arrivals to take center stage with music from IGGY POP, PIXIES, THE METROPOLITIAN JAZZ OCTET (playing the music of Billie Holiday), RHIANNON GIDDENS and Francesco Turrisi (appearing at the Kent Stage this Wednesday), COCHEMEA GASTELUM, ANGELIQUE KIDJO, and Mali's TINARIWEN.

During the fourth set things get a little 'preachy' as I resurrect a classic from the 'vault' with WILDERNESS ROAD'S humorous take on religious zealots called 'The Gospel' and surround it with a bluesy lament from ALBERT COLLINS, more irreverent humor from FIRESIGN THEATRE, an inspirational message via brother 'Jimmy Bell' ala the band CALLIOPE, before completing said set with three more new tracks from OH SEES, STEREOLAB, and JESCA HOOP.

By now your probably chanting 'is that all there is oh enlightened one' to which I'll respond with a hearty 'heal no.' There's another BEATLES outtake from the new “Abbey Road' remaster, new songs from international artists KOKOKO (Congo) and ALTIN GUN (Netherlands), plus YUSEF LATEEF, SLAPP HAPPY, and later SENOR COCONUT doing a meringue inspired version of KRAFTWERK'S 'The Robots.' There's plenty to take in on this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode (#339) as I've acquired another remastered gem, added a few more new releases, paid homage to the late drumming maverick, GINGER BAKER, and 'covered' the music selected by the noise band PIN 2 HOT that they drew inspiration from during last week's live performance.

THE BEATLES 'Abbey Road' 50th Anniversary Edition joins the list of reissues to be played today (Take 36 of 'You Never Give Me Your Money' to be exact), along with another STEREOLAB album (this time it's 'Dots & Loops'), BRIAN ENO, and MASSIVE ATTACK. There's new releases added from ALPHA CAT and HAUSCHKA, plus more from CHRISSIE HYNDE & THE VALVE BONE WOE ENSEMBLE, PIXIES, IGGY POP, MILES DAVIS, and TY SEGALL.

Then there's that whole matter of Pin 2 Hot's musical selection from last week's performance. They deconstructed and reassembled rock and soul melodies (ala Albert Ayler) so to honor their handiwork, I'll 'cover the covers' so to speak in my own slightly demented way. That means during the fourth set you'll hear DEVO'S cover of the ROLLING STONES 'Satisfaction,' BILL FRISELL interpreting LINK WRAY'S 'Rumble,' and RAHSAAN ROLAND KIRK embellishing THE TEMPTATIONS 'My Girl,' along with several other selections they chose to play.

During the final set, I'll mark the passing of GINGER BAKER by playing songs from two different groups he was part of, then throw in a MONTY PYTHON classic bit to honor the 50th anniversary of their debut, before signing off for another week.

Yipee! It's time to get creative once again and produce another new TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES. While listening to some musical ideas to use on this week's episode (#336) I scoured the latest OH SEES release, came across 'The Daily Heavy,' and lo and behold, there it was! The band used a rubber duck or doggie squeaky toy as a percussion instrument to begin the song, so I incorporated it into a set that started with the another new DETENTION song, then THE RACONTUERS, and followed it with MAGMA from Udu Wudu (the vocalizing is similar), then RODRIGO Y GABRIELA, KING CRIMSON (from Discipline), and finished up with RAINBOW FFOLLY (60's psychedelic folk).

Changing the tempo the second set starts jazzy with the new WALLACE RONEY album, then soulfully moves to MARC COHN & BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA, vintage TOM WAITS, a spacy Latin rhythm from CARLINHOS BROWN, before the texture changes with PREOCCUPATIONS and on to another new cut from NAREN BUDHKAR & HEVREH ENSEMBLE.

This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #335) there's plenty to crow about. (Where the heck did that phrase come from anyway?). I start the show pontificating about how listening to free form radio in the late 1960's in N.E. Ohio influenced how I approach this program and proceed to show you exactly what I'm talking about. Boy was this a fun show to make.

It starts off with another new gem from PERE UBU'S latest, then seamlessly blends into a PORTICO QUARTET piece, adding more new material from the OH SEES, STANLEY CLARKE, and PETER LAUGHNER, as well as 'vault' tidbits from JACK LANCASTER & ROBIN LUMLEY to the mix.

Having caught Wes Anderson's stop animation movie Fantastic Mr. Fox over the weekend, it inspired me to create a set using two songs by ALEXANDRE DESPLAT from that film intermixed with new reggae music from STEEL PULSE, the spoken word ravings of WILD MAN FISCHER, and the sonic sounds from HAWKESTREL and INVISIBLE OPERA COMPANY OF TIBET (Daevid Allen & Gilli Smyth).

Now the ball really gets rolling as CALEXICO & IRON & WINE lead off set number three, followed by THE BAD PLUS doing a jazz cover of the PIXIE anthem 'Velouria,' followed by the PIXIES playing that same piece, which evolves into Akron's own DETENTION doing a blistering cover of “Helter Skelter.' That all leads into BLACK SABBATH'S 'Paranoid' followed by JOHN HARTFORD reciting 'The Lowest Pair' (proving you can play metal and folk music back to back).

There's all sorts of goodies throughout the remainder of the show (including songs from JONATHAN RICHMAN, PETER GABRIEL, and IMOGEN HEAP) and the final set contains an amazing acoustic guitar version of Pink Floyd's epic, 'Echoes,' interpreted by RODRIGO Y GABRIELA from their latest album, 'Mettavolution.'

I can't believe it's one week into September already. Where did the summer go? It seems every time I look up it's another day, week, or month flying by. It'll be time to rake the leaves shortly, then, god forbid, another five months of shoveling the walks. Slow down Paul. You're getting way ahead of yourself...again. It seems like every week something inspires me to put together a set or two with a certain sound to it and on today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #333) surf guitars and old time jazz standards became this weeks obsession so during the fourth set you'll hear some very unusual 'covers' featuring both genres.

During that set ROBERT FRIPP'S STRING QUINTET begins it off with a electrified acoustic version of The Venture's 'Walk Don't Run' which then leads into a remix of SARAH VAUGHAN interpreting a jazzy version of the hit song 'Fever.' What follows next is ORANJI SYMPHONETTE playing Henry Mancini's 'Experiment In Terror' and JOHN ZORN shredding the 'James Bond Theme.' Boy Oh Boy! There's nothing like celebrating great 'live' events so I've pulled out all the stops on today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #331) to do just that. This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival AND the umpteenth time my local Akron 'Highland Square' neighborhood brings over 100 performers to their yearly 'Porchrokr' festival so I'll focus on both celebrations by playing plenty of great music found at each.

Porchrokr is held on Saturday, August 17th beginning at 10:30 a.m. so I'll play music from local acts appearing there including THE HI-FI'S, THE BEYONDERERS, and FANCY LEGS. Accompanying FANCY LEGS during their set will be former TIN HUEY band mates CHRIS BUTLER & HARVEY GOLD and rumor has it several 'Huey' classics will be played so I’ll start the show today with one of those classics. (I guess you’ll just have to tune in and find out which song it is).


Before commemorating the Woodstock festival in the final hour there's plenty of other great music in store including NEW selections from the latest PERE UBU, AFRICA EXPRESS (featuring Damon Albarn), RAMIN DJAWADI, JESCA HOOP, and FLYING LOTUS.

I've got several quirky cuts out of the 'vault' from CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, JAMES WHITE & THE BLACKS, and CHI-PIG all combined in one segment, while ROBBIE ROBERTSON, JIM PEPPER, BRIAN ENO & DAVID BYRNE, RY COODER, and STEVE EARLE all are played in another that honors our history as a land 'of' immigrants; regardless of religion, color, or language. VIOLENT FEMMES does an amazing rendition of 'God Bless America' during that set as well.

The Woodstock set during the final hour features numerous cuts from the just issued '50th Anniversary Back To The Garden' album including several never before released pieces from CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, JANIS JOPLIN, and JEFFERSON AIRPLANE.
