Congratulations! You made it to 2026. ๐
And while the past year saw some forward movement toward a cleaner, greener, safer, and more equitable future, it also brought increased anti-EV sentiment, policies designed to make electric vehicle ownership less appealing, and automakers quietly walking back their all-electric promises.
Add in rising costs of living, largely static wages, and less disposable income each monthโฆ and suddenly the constant push to โupgradeโ your car feels less exciting โ and a lot more exhausting.
So instead of hopping back onto the automotive upgrade treadmill, weโre suggesting something different.
Gen Z calls it tech hoarding โ keeping the tech you already own, maintaining it, upgrading it smartly, and refusing to be financially jump-scared by every shiny new product launch. And yes, it absolutely applies to cars.
In this episode, we cover:
โข What tech hoarding actually means (and what it doesnโt)
Weโll explain it all.

In 2022, Ford launched its first all-electric F-150, the F-150 Lightning. Their second all-electric pickup ever (after the limited-production Ranger Electric at the turn of the century), the Lightning promised a new era where full-size electric trucks could matchโor even outperformโtheir gasoline counterparts. It wasnโt just about driving: with its massive battery, the Lightning could even power your home during a power outage, making it a true workhorse for both the jobsite and everyday life.
But after promising a competitive starting price, Ford pushed it up by more than 30%. The entry-level model became difficult to buy in its extended-range form, and instead of focusing on affordability, Ford highlighted high-end features aimed at affluent buyersโthose less interested in a true work truck.
Two weeks ago, just after a White House appearance supporting a rollback of fuel economy rules (which would favor more polluting vehicles under the guise of affordability), CEO Jim Farley confirmed a rumor: the F-150 Lightning is dead.
Already slowed by a fire at an aluminum production facility Ford relied on, the Lightningโs Rouge plant has gone silent. Ford now says it will bring a โnewโ F-150 Lightning: a plug-in hybrid with a range-extending engine and a claimed 700+ mile rangeโthe truck Ford says customers want.
But do they?
Nikki, an F-150 Lightning owner who uses her truck as a farm and work vehicle, argues the real reason is clear: itโs not the customers, and itโs not profitability. Itโs poor marketing, bad launch decisions, and a willingness to bow to political pressure.
History, it seems, is repeating itself.

Weโre getting to the end of the year, and usually around this time we make a video explaining whatโs been going on behind the scenes โ where our support has come from, and what weโve spent it on.
But in a world where costs are rising everywhere โ where U.S. health insurance costs for the team rose by 40% over last year, and where YouTube ad revenue fell to its lowest level in more than nine years โ we decided that this year we needed to be a little more frank, and a little less vague.
So hereโs what 2025 has really been like for the team, what saved us, why we didnโt make it to Everything Electric in Vancouver, and what our plans are for next year.
TL;DR: Weโre not going anywhere โ but there are some changes coming.

Happy Holidays! Itโs that magical time of year when, for those in the Northern Hemisphere, thoughts turn to winter wonderlands and, for many, the dream of a white Christmas.
But what if you could experience snowโฆ in the middle of August? Up north, no less? Thatโs exactly what our guests didโthey took a stock Chevrolet Bolt EV all the way from the Great Lakes to the Arctic Ocean. Why? Simply for the thrill of itโand because no one had ever done it in a Bolt EV before.
Meet Joseph Quigley of Quigโs Quest and his childhood friend Micah Leier, the duo who made this daring journey a reality and documented it all for us to enjoy on YouTube. Today, Kate Walton-Elliott and Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield sit down for an informal chat about the trip, what Joe and Micah experienced on the road, and some questions about what they've got planned for the future.
As it's the holidays - we also hope you have some time to sit down and watch the series for yourself - the link's just below - and Joe says that he's preparing a Q&A Video with Micah to give you all the chance to ask any questions we didn't. To leave your questions, be sure to drop them in the duo's finale video (which went live this week) - or reach out to Joe on Mastodon @[email protected] !

New tools, new workspace, and a stalled electric motorcycle projectโwelcome to Nikkiโs AuDHD side quests.
Weโre now officially into the holiday season, which means a little extra time off work. While Nikki and the team are taking the next two weeks off, weโve still got some funโand slightly differentโvideos lined up this week.
Todayโs video focuses on something we hope youโve all got time for this holiday season: side quests. In Nikkiโs case, a smattering of AuDHD, too much to do, and the lure of the newest shiny thing means the Vectrix VX-1 electric motorcycle project has been moving at a snailโs pace.
To keep the family sane (and get shop equipment out of the dining room), sheโs been busy organizing, planning, and building her own workspace in the edit roomโcomplete with a Carvera Air desktop CNC and a Bambu Lab X1C 3D printer.
Hereโs a quick tour of the new setup, some of the side-quest projects sheโs been tackling, and the real reason the bike still isnโt on the road yet.

Welcome to this weekโs episode of TEN โ Transport Evolved News!
Today on the show: Ford kills the F150 Lightning EV, cancels its T3, and future electric van projects - while refusing to bring the Ranger PHEV to the U.S., promising a plug-in hybrid Lightning (EREV) to replace the EV variant - and selling its batteries to AI farms.
Plus, Europe backtracks on its ICE car ban, and President Trump's cabinet prepares to kill one of the world's premiere climate research bodies.

This video was originally filmed as a review of the 2025 F150 Lightning Lariat -- but the day we were due to publish it, Ford unceremoniously canceled all future F150 Lightnings - and instead promised the name plate would be added to a plug-in hybrid instead. We've got some pretty strong feelings about that here at the channel, but, save for an impromptu introduction filmed by Nikki in her studio with a cup of tea - here's the full review in its original form.
... Because while the F150 Lightning lariat is an expensive vehicle... sorry.. WAS an expensive vehicle to buy new, we think it's still worth buying as a used truck.
Here's why.

Are electric vehicles actually "silent killers" stalking our streets? The internet comments section certainly thinks so, claiming the quiet motors and heavy batteries of EVs make them a menace to pedestrians. But a brand new study published in Nature Communications has crunched the numbers from the UK's road safety database, and the results upend that narrative. In this video, Kate break down why the data shows pedestrians are actually no more likely to collide with a fully electric vehicle than a gas car , and why the surprising "danger" statistic actually belongs to hybrids, which have a significantly higher casualty rate.
Does the massive weight of an EV battery guarantee a worse injury? The study suggests that while EVs are heavier, they don't cause more severe injuries, likely thanks to modern active safety tech stepping in to save the day. However, the data does identify a clear villain: the massive rise of SUVs, which are significantly more likely to cause severe or fatal injuries regardless of what powers them. Join Kate as she explores how noise regulations and vehicle bloat are shaping the safety of our streets, and why we need to stop blaming the battery.

The weather this past week at the house has been beastly - and much of the Pacific Northwest is under water. The mud at the house - not to mention the more than a foot of rain - has left gardening off the table.
Will Nikki get her plot ready for next year's first planting before the Winter Solstice?
