There are plenty of benefits for Ford F150 Lightning owners thanks to the truck’s close relationship with the gasoline F150—from shared components to a wealth of aftermarket add-ons.

But the Lightning also inherits one less desirable trait: its massive shifter. Designed to auto-fold so the center console can become a makeshift desk while parked, the shifter is elegant in concept—but in practice, both ICE and EV F150 owners have reported significant issues. In some cases, the shifter can fail entirely, leaving the truck stranded.

To avoid this problem, inventive owners have developed a retrofit: swapping in a rotary shifter from other Ford vehicles. This not only frees up console space for storage but also makes the “desk” usable by a front-seat passenger while the truck is parked.

Today, we’re performing that upgrade on Nikki’s F150 Lightning, complete with a 3D-printed part she designed herself. The result is functionally superior, aesthetically pleasing, and likely the quickest upgrade she’s made to her truck so far!

Next week, the U.S. celebrates Thanksgiving — the unofficial kickoff of the holiday season. Over the next six weeks, more people will be on the move, traveling to spend time with the people they care about than at any other point in the year.

This year, however, unpredictable conditions at many U.S. airports following the recent government shutdown mean more people are choosing to drive instead of fly. While many EV owners may embark on a long, multi-day road trip without a second thought, minority and marginalized communities — including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ people, immigrants, disabled travelers — face additional challenges.

These challenges include not only finding safe places to stay overnight but also locating charging options along the route that are safe to use — particularly in areas where travelers from marginalized communities may face heightened scrutiny, harassment, or worse. While charging infrastructure exists, it’s not equally safe or accessible for everyone, meaning that planning an EV road trip can require extra care for those whose appearance, identity, or background makes them more vulnerable.

Today, as the Trans community observes the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) — a day to remember those lost to hatred, harassment, violence, and prejudice — we’re sharing a practical travel-safety guide for EV drivers from minority communities, and for anyone who feels vulnerable on the road, heading out during the holidays. While written with electric-vehicle owners in mind, the advice is broadly useful for anyone who identifies with — or cares for someone in — a vulnerable or marginalized community. And although the focus is on U.S. travel, many of these tips apply around the world.

A few weeks ago, Nikki’s Charge Station Pro stopped connecting to the home network. Even a factory reset couldn’t bring it back to initial setup.

Since she had a spare, she swapped in a new unit (check out the previous video here: https://youtu.be/vALvCtE4SeE) and called Ford’s EV charger support team to replace the broken one.

The problem? After a factory reset and with no WiFi, the broken Charge Station Pro couldn’t pair with the home network, the truck, or her $10,000 home integration system—turning it into a very expensive paperweight. It might charge the truck, but it can’t do the thing it was actually bought for: keeping the home powered during an outage.

Today, we’re taking matters into our own hands. Since Ford won’t replace it, we’re going to try ourselves using some basic hardware diagnostic tricks. We’re breaking out the serial cables and Minicom terminal to see if we can bring this non-functioning Charge Station Pro back to life.

Last month, we were invited to Los Angeles as guests of GM at the NBC Universal Back Lot to see the new 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV up close. To get there, we took the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV Premiere—owned by Nikki’s wife—with over 135,000 miles on the clock.

Today, after seeing the new Bolt, Nikki is on her way home with plenty of thoughts about the original Bolt, the new model, and how the two stack up in a market full of oversized EVs. Along the way, she stops by some very sad charging stations, spots a camouflaged car testing on the GrapeVine, and gets a little too excited about a classic Honda converted to electric and living its best life.
