If you invest in the stock market - either directly or indirectly - you get to benefit financially when a company does well. If it has a good quarter and turns a decent profit, your shares increase in value. If it announces a new product that gets everyone excited, your shares become more in demand, and thus the share price goes up.
And of course, when things don't go so well, the value of those shares can go down. And while most people view shareholding in a company as a passive activity - they benefit or suffer based on a company's stock price - shareholders can often play a more active part in a company's future by voting at Shareholder Meetings - and if they have enough shares, make proposals to be voted on at those meetings.
And in recent years we've seen more and more individuals (retail investors) and organizations (institutional investors) make proposals for vote at shareholder meetings that can impact a company's future trajectory, its products, how it treats its employees, and how it is viewed in the world. And if you're wanting the world to be a cleaner, greener, safer, smarter, and more equitable place, campaigning for change using Shareholder Activism can make some pretty big impacts on companies that would otherwise... just do whatever makes them the most money, consequences be damned.
So today, we're examining what Shareholder Activism is, explain the basics of what a shareholder proposal is, and ask what you can do to impact a company's future if you're someone with a shareholding in it.
