Trash & Treasures

An anomaly that only felt possible because every kid in America was watching Hanna Barbara reruns and mostly affectionate, this movie holds up way better than it has any right to. But it's still our job to dig into the context before and after, and the weird state of both the franchise and Barbara characters as a whole. 2002 was a TIME, y'all.

We thought we were special. We thought a Holmes nerd could glean something worth talking about from a movie that didn't just get trashed but buried under a mountain of sludge. We were extremely wrong.

What happens when you combine most of the cast of Zoolander with a charmingly goofy 70s detective show? Something real bad, it turns out, because Todd Phillips is also there siphoning all that pesky "joy" out of the situation. Or: in which Dorothy knows a lot about a historical slash fandom and this shit ain't it.

After lo these many months, we've finally returned to the well of Anne Rice novels--sorry, "Anne Rampling." Exit to Eden is part of Rice's weird walkabout with literary and erotic novels before her return to vampires, and it wins the coveted "probably less actively dangerous as a damagingly inaccurate text about BDSM than 50 Shades of Grey" award almost solely because it's much harder to emulate. It is definitely a novel about how kinksters just need that healing monogamy, though.

The internet's only Smallville-cast returns with a decided downgrade in the episode offerings, although Lex having a destiny so hardcore and dastardly that even a vision of it KILLS A WOMAN almost makes up for it.

This time we have Shawn in tow to see if, maybe, we can suss out what tentative connections the series occasionally decides to have to the comics. Also introducing our new, very educational segment: wisdom from Pa Kent. The fucker.

Happy Valentine's Day, listeners! This year's title is a supposedly Lovecraftian hentai title by the director of Urotsukidoji, featuring immortal fetuses, DAN GREEN, and a supposed cameo by our dear Dr. West.

It was not as fun as Overfiend. And for us, that's saying something.

So STRAP IN for all the content warnings and a locked room mystery that is not actually a mystery at all, no matter how many time stamps they flash onscreen in typewriter font.

Do you like YuGiOh? We hope so, because this reunion movie was pretty much exclusively made for people who already had Big Feels about the franchise. Even as three nerds who were all part of the phenomenon in the 2000s, we're still not entirely sure we got all of it.

But Alexis was kind enough to power through the To Wong Foo episode with us last Pride Month and dammit, we owed her.

Was it BAD? Listen, Yu-Gi-Oh transcends mere human concepts of goodness and badness. There are only card games. And cults. People forget the cults.

After three false starts, we finally got hold of the Japanese remake of 1990's Ghost. And honestly, we can't think of a better movie to start the decade with. Now we get to audibly despair for an hour about the production oddities that make this beautiful little gem so incredibly hard to find.

We found it: the missing link between Interview with the Vampire and Twilight. On the one hand, we have a child vampire villain and musings about the power of human nature; on the other, a Not Like Other Girls heroine who's into the new bad boy in town (but not like, TOO bad). It's a fascinating historical document. As a novel....well, the ending's unexpected.

Happy holidays, listeners! For this year's double feature we looked at two overtly Christmas-themed movies about that rarest of beings: the manic pixie dream BOY.

The Spirit of Christmas is a Lifetime movie--you can tell because characters have heard of sex. But we're not here to take easy potshots at made-for-TV Christmas movies. We're here because Shawn has somehow never seen one. It's for SCIENCE.

We actually went out to a theater to see Last Christmas, a podcast rarity! It went and threw us for a loop by being...good as hell, actually?
