  • Go Crows! The Internet's Only Smallville Podcast - Season 1, Episodes 2-4
Not to be contained by the first of April, Go Crows returns! We're making a proper go of it, but the title stuck. Apologies to all the other theoretical podcasts about Smallville that might have come before us.
Our three-episode spread this time leads us on a merry chase through The Fly, an episode that's just about Good, Actually; and an evil lesbian to serve as immediate punishment for enjoying ourselves.
As always, Lex is our special boy. Because somehow this show fucked up so hard that the billionaire business owner is the most sympathetic character.
CONTENT WARNING for discussion of sexual assault, misogyny, homophobia, incest, bullying, stalking, and abuse.

  • Bathtubs Over Broadway - Live Your Truth, Love Weird Shit
This documentary was delivered right to our doorstep with a stamp that said "your brand": the tale of a late-night comedy writer and how he stumbled into the enormous and yet nearly lost world of the industrial musical, multi-million dollar shows put on for corporations and never meant to be seen by society at large. Which is a crime, because "My Bathroom" is a work of aural genius.

  • Drunk Book Club: The Phantom Of Manhattan (AKA Love Never Dies)
In which a longtime Phantom fan and someone who doesn't even go here read a published fanfic that hits all the notes of being BAD fanfic, including: a sequel that the original didn't need, killing off characters for no reason, magically adding babies that make no sense, and turning the canon love interest into an asshole because they're in the way of your preferred ship. And then there are the GENERAL bad book problems, like bad pacing and a complete disdain for women.
Anyway, then it got made into a multi-million dollar musical. Because Andrew Lloyd Webber gets away with that kind of shit. Oh, and Forsyth is a pro-Brexit shitstain going back over a decade so y'know, fuck him in general outside of the bad book.

  • Blood & Chocolate - A Different Kind of Wish Fulfillment
"Wait, wasn't this week supposed to be Good Manners?"
Weeeeeeell, we ran into a little trouble. Mostly in that Good Manners isn't about LADY werewolves.
Instead, we decided to take a look at Blood & Chocolate, a movie based on a popular proto-YA novel in that it shares some character names. It might not be a GOOD movie, but it managed to surprise us with its rejection of toxic masculinity in a genre known for dickweed alpha males.
CONTENT WARNING for discussion of stalking, sexual assault, animal death, racism and incest/pedophilia.

  • Ginger Snaps - One for All the Teenage "Weird Girls"
Entry two in our exploration of the werewolf genre is a big ol' puberty metaphor and a fantastic celebration of being weird, goth, and just a little bit pretentious as a teenager. Not to mention the great acting.

  • The Howling (w/ Jourdain Searles) -- Where Are All the Other Female Werewolf Movies?
It's that time of year again, where we put our spookiest foot forward and our horror history hats on. And since we're a podcast full of vampire fans, we thought we'd step out of our comfort zone and try out some of those werewolves we've heard so much about.
This week we're joined by media critic Jourdain Searles to shine a light on the horror classic that was unfortunately overshadowed by An American Werewolf in London when it came out and makes stellar use of the werewolf as a metaphor for grappling with trauma.
CONTENT WARNING for discussion of sexual assault, misogyny, violence toward women and body horror

  • Manhunter - The Many Faces of Hannibal Lecter
It's our third anniversary! We decided to celebrate by talking about Hannibal Lecter's (excuse us, "Lecktor") first appearance on film. And if that gives us lots of opportunities to also talk about a certain Bryan Fuller...well, that's just a lucky coincidence, isn't it?
But seriously, Manhunter is pretty great, and responsible for the aesthetic of forensic dramas as we know them today.

  • Drunk Book Club: Michael Crichton's Sphere
Every bad book club eventually succumbs to the allure of Crichton, so we picked ourselves a doozy: a seafaring adventure about how everything would be better if all those minorities would just calm down and let a rational straight white man make all the decisions.
Anyway, Dorothy insists this is the least eye-melting title she could've chosen. But we did remember to recommend some nicer, better things at the end this time.

  • Ready to Rumble - When Making a Movie Does NOT Save the Failing Company
This week stumbled into yet another production oddity--the 2000 film that was meant to promote World Championship Wrestling (WCW) but ended up effectively bankrupting it instead, leaving the WWE as the only big-name player in town. Now, we think wrestling is pretty neat but our knowledge of it is...uh. Limited, shall we say. So we had to call in a ringer to tell us all the cool wrestling history facts and references in this Arthurian quest narrative.
Or: wow, this held up so much better than the last movie from the turn of the century movie we tried to rewatch!

  • Stardust - The "Old Gaiman Nerds" Power Hour
The post-LOTR fantasy boom was a strange time. It inspired Hollywood to pick up dozens of fantasy novels and cram them into three-act Hollywood adaptations whether or not much remained of the original work by the end. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it...really, really didn't.
Wow, this movie hates women more than we remembered, huh?
CONTENT WARNING for discussion of sexual assault, slavery and misogyny
