  • 028 | Keep Daddy and Mommy Times

    Hey Fellow Dad,

Proverbs 23:26 instructs a son to “give” his heart to his father and to let his eyes “observe” his father’s ways. What a beautiful picture of an ideal father-son relationship!

We all hope our kids can emulate us. But are you, as a dad, intentionally leading your children to want to have that kind of relationship with you?

In this episode, my wife Kristin joined me to talk about a simple way for parents and children to build a weekly routine of one-on-one times together. (We also had an unexpected appearance by our two-year old son.)

    Key Thoughts
    • Do dads have an implied responsibility in our children giving us their hearts and observing our ways?
  • Dads, spend time with all your children and be sure to spend time with each of your children.
  • Keep daddy times light and fun, drawing your children's hearts to your own, causing them to want to give you their hearts.
  • Workable processes may take years to develop. None of us are really experts. Allow yourself to make mistakes as you progress in growing, asking God for wisdom all the while.

  • 026 | Nourish Your Children's Faith

    Hey Dads,

We hear about so many young people who have grown up in Christian homes but left the faith. We can’t guarantee that our children will follow God, but we can find ways to help encourage a thinking, vibrant faith in God’s word . . . including using books!

    --Nathan

    Quotes

Just as healthy plants need nourishment, our children need nourishment too. Specifically, their faith in God and His word needs nourishment. How do we, as fathers, provide that nourishment to their souls? In this episode, I list five practical tips to help you nourish your children's souls in trusting God.

We're not promoting mindless belief and blind faith; we strongly believe in thinking through questions, we cherish the responsibility of finding out why we should or should not believe certain things; and we want to nourish inquisitiveness in our children's minds.

You and I don't have to be experts or feel expert in a particular field to speak confidently about God's word.

"Why would you put your faith in something that can't supported by evidence?"-- J. Warner Wallace

Tips for Nourishing Your Children’s Faith
    1. Consider their age and level of understanding.
  • Confidently teach them the truth of God’s word.
  • Consistently keep the truths of God's word before them.
    • Have a daily family Bible time (links: Lead Your Family to and in the Bible and Use Tools To Teach Your Children The Bible)
  • Read books that encourage faith in God’s word (links: Spread a Feast for Your Family and God of the Aurora Part 1 and Part 2).
  • Read books that lead to discussion about what is true (links: Why Stories Matter and Entertain to Educate with Stories).
  • Correct falsehood as it arises.
  • Capture teachable moments.
  • CONVERSE with your children regularly.

  • 024 | Lead Your Family to and in the Bible

    Hey Fellow Dads!

Do you ever listen to the news and feel like the world is one big bounce house—and you're trying to stand in it? I know I do. This is a rapidly changing world. Two words come to mind to describe this world: unpredictability and instability.

But there is something we as dads can do for our families throughout the year, that will give them a stability that just isn't found in this ever-changing world. We’ve got to lead them to the word of God and in the word of God.

So on this first day of 2024, in this episode--#24--I lay out five very simple, doable practices you can begin implementing today to lead your family to the Bible and in the Bible.

    Happy New Year!

    Nathan

    Main Ideas

    1. Select a passage.
  • Set a daily time that works for the whole family.
  • Study the passage.
  • Simply explain the scripture text
  • Seek for the practical application. Ask, how can the truth in this text be used in our lives?
  • Bonus Suggestion: Supplicate! Ask for God’s help and guidance and power to obey what He has taught us in that passage.
  • 💡See the show notes at https://refreshpublishing.com/024-lead-your-family-to-and-in-the-bible for more details, recommended books, and a list of recommended Scriptures for getting started with family Bible time.

There are treasures to be found only in books, but the greatest treasure is found in the greatest book, and if you will read that Book, you'll find great treasure there!

Fellow dads, as we plunge into 2024, let's be sure to prioritize leading our families to the Bible and in the Bible!

  • 021 | How to Keep Christmas Well

    Hey Dads,

Even old Ebenezer Scrooge learned to "keep Christmas well." Have you? And are you passing that on to your children? This episode lists six suggestions for keeping Christmas well and leading our children to do the same. Enjoy!

    —Nathan

    Outline
    1. Know the message yourself.
The five essential truths about Jesus:
        •     Jesus' pre-incarnate existence
        •     Jesus' perfection
        •     Jesus' payment for our sins
        •    Jesus' power over death
        •    Jesus' promise of everlasting life for those who believe on Him
  • Teach this message to your kids!
  • Read stories that engage your children's interest in the story of Jesus' birth.
  • Become familiar with Christmas carols (and help your children do the same).
  • As a family, share the message of Christ's birth with others.
  • Pray that your children will truly worship the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • For Scripture References

  • 020 | Entertain to Educate with Stories

    Hey Dads,

Our English word amuse comes from an old French word amuser, which meant—are you ready for this? "To to stupefy, waste time, or deceive by distracting."

Often, our children’s entertainment is merely that kind of amusing—concerned only with keeping them occupied and out of trouble, even if it is a waste of time. But to entertain (which Webster defined as “to engage the attention and retain the company of one, by agreeable conversation, discourse or argument”) can actually have a redeeming quality—we as parents can use entertainment to educate our children. How?

This episode won't give you a set of steps, but it will you just a taste of two stories that are both highly entertaining and deeply educational . . . for the rest of the stories, head over to refreshpublishing.com/shop and get your own copy of the 50 Famous Stories Retold audiobook. The stories sampled in today’s episode are

  • ch. 46 Whittington and His Cat

  • 019 | Use Tools to Teach Your Children the Bible

    Hey Dads,

We have to wear many hats as dads, but what is the one essential responsibility God has given us? In this episode, we’ll see what God said about this question, and I’ll mention some practical tools we can use to carry out that one essential responsibility for our children.

Whether you’ve yet to get started in teaching your children the Bible, or you’ve been doing it for years, this episode probably has at least a few treasures you’ll want to share with your family!

    --Nathan

    Main Ideas / Quotes

"If it keeps me from my Bible it’s not good for me."

While it's true that the Bible seems to clearly imply that we can and should read other books, God did not command us to read any other book. God did not promise to bless us for reading any other book. God did not promise to bless us for obeying any other book. And God did not command the fathers of His chosen people to diligently teach their children any other book.

    Scriptures
    • Deut.6:6-9
6  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
  • Eph. 6:4
  • ”And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
