It is 19th Century England. Arthur Clawson and Grace Aldridge have been living together as man and wife quite happily. However, Arthur is still legally married to a wife he neither loves nor is rich enough to obtain a divorce from (requiring an Act of Parliament under the current laws of England). But things change when Arthur's wife is found dead ... and he is arrested and charged with her murder.
