  • the Importance of Routine

In this episode of the Triathlonology podcast, Coaches Oliver and Jacqui are revealing all their secrets! They're holding themselves accountable for getting back into the routines that make them feel their best.

Routine amplifiers include training in the morning and following training up with a healthy breakfast and a light healthy lunch, staying hydrated, eating the final meal of the day earlier so it's digested before bed, and reducing screen time.

  • Why are we different?

In this episode of the Triathlonology podcast, Coaches Oliver and Jacqui discuss what sets them apart from other race events and other coaches (at least what they've been told).

Everyone remarks, what a wonderful time people have had at our events. They’re so friendly and laid back and welcoming.. And I think that is our ethos .. that we want everyone to feel welcome, that they're going to enjoy themselves.

We've removed all the things that we've hated when we've done other events in the past and made improvements because we want as many people as possible to enjoy what we enjoy.

If you want to do it and enjoy yourself and learn new skills, come and see us. We love it because that's what it's about.

It's about every person, whatever their shape or size, fitness ability, fitness level, it doesn't matter.

We encourage everybody, whatever your ability or fear. We encourage you as an individual, and we'll always find something positive to say about you.

Just come and have a go because everyone has to start somewhere.

  • Training and living when overwhelmed

In this episode of the Triathlonology podcast, Coaches Oliver and Jacqui discuss the challenges of overwhelm in life and training.

Everybody gets overwhelmed, and it doesn’t matter whether you're an elite athlete or age groupers like us. The age groupers beat themselves up a lot, a lot more than pros ever would.

  • Going Long: Middle and Long Distance Training

In this episode of the Triathlonology podcast, Coaches Oliver and Jacqui discuss the challenges and strategies of mastering longer form racing, such as 70.3 and Ironman type races.

They emphasize the importance of swim training, as it's the first discipline in a triathlon and can significantly impact the rest of the race.

They also discuss the need for strength and endurance in cycling, suggesting big gear sets and tempo sessions. For running, they recommend hill sets and easy runs for conditioning.

They also stress the importance of rest and recovery, particularly sleep, as well as proper nutrition both in daily life and during the race. They suggest being adaptable and having a backup plan, as no plan survives first contact.

They also highlight the benefits of having a coach to help put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

  • How To Select a Good Coach (They Don't Have To Be a Horse)

In today's episode, we explore what it means to be a coach and what kind of experience makes up a good coach.

As Ollie says, "You don't have to be a horse to be a jockey."

We explore the pitfalls of professional athletes becoming coaches, and that's not always the best choice.

Ted Lasso is a perfect example of a great coach who wasn't a professional athlete in the sport he coached. :)
