  • 5 What Jesus Meant by the Abomination of Desolation - Mark 13:14-23
Why does Jesus tell His followers to run when the "abomination of desolation" appears? Can you outrun God's judgment—and if God's wrath is not directed at His people, why does Jesus tell them to flee and pray? Jesus moves from the "beginning of pains" to the terrifying period of tribulation associated with the abomination of desolation. In the Olivet Discourse, we examine what the abomination of desolation means, its connection to Daniel, its partial fulfillment in the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, and its apparent future fulfillment at the end of the age. We also explore the Great Tribulation, the Antichrist, God's purpose in judgment, and the surprising biblical connection between tribulation and God's mercy. My sermons are the fruit of nearly 30 years of pastoral ministry, biblical counseling, formal seminary training, and a lifelong passion for God's Word. Since childhood, I've been drawn to the beauty and power of expository preaching—opening Scripture verse by verse and applying it to real life. After graduating from Moody Bible Institute, I spent the next 27 years serving as a youth pastor, senior pastor, church planter, and host of the Food For Your Soul radio broadcast. Along the way, I also earned a Master of Sacred Literature and a Doctor of Religious Studies. For more content from D. Richard Ferguson, visit TreasuringGod.com. • The 7 Churches - Smyrna and Philadelphia
This sermon examines the letters to the churches of Smyrna and Philadelphia in Revelation, emphasizing that faithful service to Christ often results in tribulation and opposition from the 'synagogue of Satan.' The message challenges the notion that a godly life is free from suffering, citing examples like Paul's stoning and the Macedonians' generosity in poverty to illustrate that believers are appointed to endure trials. It teaches that while earthly wealth is temporary, spiritual richness is found in laying up treasures in heaven and maintaining a generous, soul-winning lifestyle. The central exhortation is to remain faithful unto death, viewing suffering as a participation in Christ's sufferings rather than a sign of abandonment. Ultimately, the sermon encourages believers to finish the race with integrity, promising that those who endure will receive the crown of life and eternal rewards from the Lord.

  • Romans: Therefore
This sermon explores the theological implications of Romans chapter five, emphasizing that justification by faith establishes a permanent peace with God and grants believers access to divine grace. The preacher argues that this new status allows Christians to find hope amidst tribulation, as suffering produces perseverance and character rooted in God's love. By contrasting human inability to save themselves with Christ's sacrificial death for sinners, the text highlights the magnitude of God's reconciling work. The message concludes that understanding these truths should not remain academic but must result in a transformed life characterized by deeper love for God and active service to others.

  • Hope in Tribulation
The sermon expounds on Romans 12:12, urging believers to rejoice in hope, remain patient during tribulation, and persist in prayer. It contrasts the steadfast, living hope found in Christ with the uncertain hopes of the world, emphasizing that God's sovereignty secures this confidence. The preacher illustrates how suffering serves a sanctifying purpose, refining faith and driving dependence on divine grace rather than earthly circumstances. By referencing biblical figures like Joseph, Job, and Stephen, the message demonstrates that enduring hardship is part of the Christian walk, anchored by the certainty of God's promises. Ultimately, the central theme asserts that hope in Christ provides the strength to endure present afflictions while looking forward to eternal glory.

  • Justified By Faith
The sermon expounds on Romans 5:6-8, emphasizing that Christ died for the ungodly while they were still sinners, demonstrating God's unconditional love. It contrasts human willingness to die for the righteous with God's initiative to save those who are spiritually helpless and hostile toward Him. The text highlights that salvation is entirely a work of grace, not based on human merit or improvement, but on Christ's substitutionary atonement which absorbs God's wrath. Believers are called to respond with patience, humility, and sacrificial love toward others, mirroring the compassion they have received. Ultimately, the message invites sinners to look to the cross for forgiveness and peace with God, rather than relying on their own works.

  • The Big Boys Are on the Block
Daniel 11 is more than nearly four centuries of historical intrigue leading up to the coming of Messiah. It is a prophetic forewarning of the constant political upheaval of the world powers that struggled for supremacy in the Middle East and beyond with the returning exiles caught up in the middle. These pagan anti-God kingdoms appear so powerful compared to the 'littleness and weakness' of God's people returning from exile. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. The people of God are not to be caught off guard and paralyzed into inaction by the trials and tribulations that threaten to destroy them. Those who know their God will stand firm and take action, resting in the truth that the proud ambitions of earthly kings will always be destroyed by God's enduring kingdom. The Kingdom of God towers over the puny kingdoms of this world including the rival kingdoms we are prone to set up in our own hearts. Even the death dealing anti-Christ who sets Himself up as God cannot stand before the overcoming, resurrection power of God's Kingdom. The big boys are on the block but not for long!
