Jesus prays throughout the gospels, but there is only one that we call THE Lord’s Prayer. While the hypocrites pray on and on, Jesus encourages us to pray in ways that focus our attention on God, his kingdom, and the forgiveness he offers

In the first of three passages dealing with the subject of hypocrisy, Jesus talks about how people can give for selfish purposes. In a world that likes to keep score, Christians should be generous for its own sake and out of knowing a God who has given generously to his people.

By itself, a jar of clay is ultimately pretty insignificant. In the ancient world, the jar itself might not have been valuable, but it could contain things which were high valuable. In a powerful metaphor, the Apostle Paul compares Christians to having treasures in jars of clay. Our value is because of the Spirit of God and the power of Christ that are alive in the heart of a believer.

As Jesus has given a series of expanding teachings on the Old Testament, each of them has been as radical in our time as it was to the first century audience for whom he was preaching. In the final teaching, Jesus starts with an easy idea, “Love your neighbor.” That’s easy enough to agree with until we think about all that entails. Jesus goes from love of neighbor to love of our enemies. It’s another picture of the gospel. As fallen people, we are enemies of God because of our sin; but Jesus went to the cross. Part of the mission of the church in the world is to share the love of Christ to those most hostile to the gospel.

We live in a world that can be vengeful. We can keep score. We can want “an eye for an eye.” This passage is not opposed to justice, but it does give us pause in the retaliation we seek. It also touches on the Christian life and generosity. What’s required of us? Is it the letter of the law? Or is the heart of the law meant to be much deeper?

With the cross on the horizon, Jesus points to heaven and to himself as the way to get there.

If we lived in a world without lies, there would be no need for oaths. As Jesus continues his moral teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, he comes to the subject of oaths. Some have taken this passage absolutely literally and interpreted it as a prohibition against a Christian ever taking any oath. But the heart of the issue is that part of the Christian witness in the world must be faithfulness to truth.
