Jesus has come from anger, to lust, and now he approaches the subject of divorce. In his day, much like our own day, there were those who believed a person could divorce for essentially any reason. As with his other ethical teachings, Jesus will point us to a different standard.

We live in a world that seems to be progressively relaxing its sexual mores. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that even lust is tantamount to adultery. This message is countercultural in our world but it is Jesus pointing to holiness and the sins of the human heart. 

What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of God? How is God a Father to him? On this Father's Day, we examine these important theological questions and how they point to the Gospel and are meant to impact our lives.

Sometimes Jesus meets us in the storm. In this passage, the disciples find themselves out on the Sea of Galilee when they get caught up in a ferocious storm. Why are they there? Because Jesus had them get on the boat. Where’s Jesus? He’s asleep on the boat. But when he wakes up, he will respond in a way which will leave the disciples with fear and awe, as they question, “Who is this?” 

At the end of the Gospel of Matthew, the risen Jesus commanded his disciples to go out into the world and to make disciples and to baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Churches disagree on virtually every aspect of how a baptism is done and what it means but one of the areas of agreement is that it is something which is important for all Christians.

We can all agree that murder is a sin. In this week’s passage, we see Jesus treat anger (and even name-calling) with similar severity. It’s a passage that grabs our attention and points to the heart issues with interpersonal sin and the seriousness with which we must pursue restoration.

As Christians, how should we read the Old Testament? This week's passage simultaneously lifts up the importance in the entirety of Scripture while pointing to what Jesus came into the world to fulfill. 

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus metaphorically compares the universal necessities of salt and light to the transformation that the gospel has on a Christian and the impact that we are to have in the world.
