A lecture by Professor Kimberly Campanello (University of Leeds) as part of the Medical and Health Humanities Seminar Series.

Professor Kimberly Campanello (University of Leeds) will read from recent work on her experience of chronic illness and disability and discuss her writing process and approach with reference to key touchstones, including Dante's acedia, Proust's corked wall and ill objects, and Alison Kafer's 'crip time'.

Kimberly Campanello is best known for MOTHERBABYHOME, a 796-page visual poetry-object and reader’s edition book (zimZalla, 2019), and sorry that you were not moved (2022), an interactive digital poetry publication produced in collaboration with Christodoulos Makris and Fallow Media. She is an inaugural Markievicz Award winner from Ireland's Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Arts Council, and she represented the UK in Munich at Klang Farben Text: Visual Poetry for the 21st Century, a festival organised by the British Council, the National Poetry Library, and Lyrik Kabinett. New poems have appeared in Granta, Poetry Review, Cambridge Literary Review, The White Review, and Poetry Ireland Review. New prose features in Tolka and in Somesuch Stories. She was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's in 2021 (age 43) and was awarded a Developing Your Creative Practice Grant by Arts Council England to support her writing of chronic illness and disability. She is Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds.

Yevheniia Orestivna Kanchura, PhD, an associate professor at the Theoretical and Applied Linguistics Department of Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University and the Deputy Manager of the Centre for Fantasy Literature Studies at the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. She has worked on her PhD dissertation on Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels in Kyiv National Linguistic University.

A lunchtime 'in conversation' event featuring Visiting Research Fellow Prof Van Gosse (Franklin & Marshall College) and Prof Daniel Geary (Mark Pigott Associate Professor in American History, School of Histories and Humanities TCD).

Professor Van Gosse is Professor of History at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania. His teaching and scholarship focus on the African American struggle for citizenship, and politics and culture in the Global Cold War. Recent publications include The First Reconstruction: Black Politics in America, From the Revolution to the Civil War (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2021); the journal edition “Irish and World Histories” (with Peter Hession and Adrian Beatty), Radical History Review, (Spring 2022); and Revolutions and Reconstructions: Black Politics in the Long Nineteenth Century (edited with David Waldstreicher). His research project as a Visiting Research Fellow at Trinity Long Room Hub is titled "The Black and Green in US Politics, 1877-1965."

The Trinity Long Room Hub 2023 Annual Edmund Burke Lecture was delivered by Professor Joanna Bourke on ‘Contemplating Evil: “Monstrous” Women in History, Politics, and Law, 1890s to the Present’.

Joanna Bourke is Professor Emerita of History at Birkbeck, University of London, and a Fellow of the British Academy. She is also the Professor of Rhetoric at Gresham College. She is the prize-winning author of fifteen books, including What it means to be Human (2011) and Fear: A Cultural History (2015), as well as over 120 articles in academic journals. In 2022, Reaktion Books published Disgrace: Global Reflections on Sexual Violence and OUP published Birkbeck: 200 Years of Radical Education for Working People. Her Edmund Burke Lecture will draw on the subject of her current research towards a book entitled Evil Women. Her books have been translated into Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Turkish, and Greek.

A lecture by Antoon De Baets (University of Groningen) organised by the Trinity Centre for Resistance Studies in partnership with the Trinity Long Room Hub.

Antoon De Baets is Emeritus Professor of History, Ethics and Human Rights at the University of Groningen, and coordinator of the Network of Concerned Historians. He has worked extensively on academic freedom, censorship and abuses of history, and the ethical implications of writing history.

Professor De Baets' lecture explores the various strategies historians have developed to resist attacks on - and abuses of - their profession. It will provide an analysis of the repertoires of resistance historians adopted in dictatorships and will reflect on the possibilities of safeguarding academic freedom in democracies.
