Lesson Summary

In this lesson, we move from justification into the next essential teaching of the Christian faith: sanctification—God’s ongoing work of making His people holy. Building on the truth that we are justified by grace through faith alone, we learn how that same faith is never alone but is always accompanied by the Spirit’s work of renewal within us.

Scripture speaks of sanctification in both a broad sense—encompassing everything God does to make us His own—and a narrow sense, focusing on the inner transformation that conforms us to the image of Christ. This transformation is not our achievement but the work of the Holy Spirit, who creates faith, reshapes our desires, and produces fruit in our lives.

At the same time, we wrestle with how believers “cooperate” in sanctification—clarifying that while we truly live and act as new creations, every good desire and work flows from God’s grace alone. The result is a life marked by faith, prayer, and service—lived not to earn God’s favor, but because we already have it in Christ.

In this final lesson on justification, we bring everything together: grace, faith, and works. What does it really mean to be justified by faith—and why does that distinction matter so much?

This teaching unpacks the difference between faith as a gift that receives Christ’s righteousness and the common confusion that turns faith into a kind of work. By contrasting Lutheran teaching with other traditions, we see how easily assurance is shifted away from Christ and back onto ourselves—and why that leads to doubt instead of peace.

The Gospel gives something better: a complete declaration. Your sins are forgiven. Christ’s righteousness is yours. From that certainty flows a life of good works—not to earn God’s favor, but because you already have it.

What does it really mean to be justified by grace, through faith?

Sermon for Maundy Thursday

Sermon Text: Exodus 24:3-11 (the blood of the first covenant); Hebrews 9:11-22 (the blood of a new covenant)

Key Thought

Is what is old always better than what is new?

On Maundy Thursday, we are brought face to face with the greatest “new” gift God has given—a covenant sealed not with the blood of bulls and goats, but with the blood of Christ Himself.

This sermon traces the story from Mount Sinai to the Upper Room, showing how the old covenant—though holy and good—was sustained by a continual “ministry of death.” Sacrifice after sacrifice revealed sin but could never fully cleanse it.

In Jesus, God does what seemed impossible: He takes on flesh in order to die. By His death, a new and better testament is established once for all—delivering eternal forgiveness, life, and salvation.

In the Lord’s Supper, this promise is placed directly into your hands. With the words “for you,” Christ gives certainty that His death is for you—that your name is written into His will and that you are a beneficiary of His promises.

"Why are Some Saved and Others Not"

Sermon for Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion

Key Thought

This question—often called the theologian’s cross—has challenged Christians for centuries. In this sermon, we confront the tension Scripture presents: God desires all to be saved, salvation is entirely His work, and yet not all believe.

Rather than resolving this mystery through human reason, we let Scripture speak. We examine the errors of both Calvinism and Arminianism, and instead confess the biblical truth: God sincerely wills the salvation of all, Christ died for all, and faith itself is a gift of the Holy Spirit—not a human decision.

At the same time, Scripture is clear that those who are lost are not condemned by God’s hidden decree, but by their own resistance to His grace.

This episode calls you to rest not in your sincerity, but in God’s promises—and to continue praying with confidence for those who do not yet believe.
