On December 31, a woman who died after being set on fire on the New York City subway earlier this month was identified as Debrina Kawam, 57, from Toms River, New Jersey, according to the New York medical examiner's office on Tuesday. Kawam was identified through fingerprint analysis, and her death, resulting from thermal and inhalation injuries, has been ruled a homicide, as stated by Julie Bolcer, a spokeswoman for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the horrific incident as a "terrorist attack," and the FBI said it was being investigated as an act of terror. The bloodshed comes on the heels of a deadly vehicle ramming attack in Germany. Fears of such attacks were a growing concern among law enforcement and attacks by lone actors at winter holiday events. Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the driver had attempted to kill as many people as possible. The truck used in the attack appeared to be a F-150 Lightning, an electric vehicle. A black flag appeared attached to the vehicle, but its significance was not immediately known.

Luigi Mangione, a Maryland native from a prominent family in the Baltimore area, is charged in both New York, where police say he fatally shot UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, and Pennsylvania, where he was arrested Monday after an extensive manhunt. Mangione appeared in court here Tuesday afternoon. His attorney, Thomas M. Dickey, said Mangione would not consent to being extradited and sought to have bail set for him. Judge David B. Consiglio of the Blair County Court of Common Pleas rejected the bail request, so Mangione will remain incarcerated now in a Pennsylvania state prison.

A 26-year-old man was identified as a “person of interest” in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. At a press conference on Monday, Dec. 9, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the suspect as Luigi Mangione. Tisch confirmed several reports that had emerged earlier in the day, saying Mangione was recognized by an employee of a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, who then called the police. “Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, as well as a U.S. passport,” Tisch continued. “Upon further investigation, officers recovered a firearm on his person, as well as a suppressor, both consistent with the weapon used in the murder. They also recovered clothing, including a mask, consistent with those our wanted individual wore. Also recovered was a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching the ID our suspect used to check into his New York City hostel before the shooting incident.”

A Maryland woman is accused of murdering her mother, and then trying to hide the remains with the help of her daughter, according to police in Prince George's County. 44-year-old Candace Craig and 19-year-old Salia Hardy are facing charges following the death of 71-year-old Margaret Craig inside her Landover, Maryland home. "Based on additional evidence gathered at the home, as well as multiple interviews, the preliminary investigation suggests Candace Craig murdered her mother on May 23, 2023," the Prince George's County Police Department said in a statement. "The following day, Hardy helped her mother attempt to dispose of the remains."

Kentucky judge shot: Sheriff kills judge at the courthouse. Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Stines has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a Kentucky District Judge Kevin Mullins, who was killed in his chambers on Thursday, according to police. Mullins, who presided over Letcher County, was shot and killed at the Letcher County Courthouse, Kentucky State Police said.
