Welcome back to True Crime with Emma, and to another episode of MISSING MONDAY 🖤 where we explore real cases, unanswered mysteries and the stories behind the headlines.
In today’s episode, we’re looking at the disappearance of Steven Cooper, a 47-year-old man who vanished from his home in Golcar, West Yorkshire, on 21 January 2008 — his birthday. Around a week later, his car was discovered abandoned on a remote track near Loch Laggan in the Scottish Highlands. But Steven himself was nowhere to be found. Despite searches and years of unanswered questions, what happened to Steven remains a mystery.
We’ll explore who Steven was, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, the journey from Yorkshire to the Highlands, and the puzzling clues left behind. How did Steven end up so far from home, and what happened after his car was found? More than 18 years later, his disappearance continues to leave his loved ones searching for answers.
If you have any information that could help with Steven’s case, or remember anything that may be relevant, please contact the police.
For support or advice relating to a missing person, you can also contact Missing People, the UK charity, on 116 000 by calling or texting. Their helpline is free and confidential. You can find more information at www.missingpeople.org.uk.

Welcome back to True Crime with Emma🖤and to another episode where we explore real cases, unanswered questions and the stories behind the headlines.
Today’s case is that of Breck Bednar, a 14-year-old boy whose life was tragically taken in February 2014 after he was groomed online by someone he had met through gaming. What initially appeared to be an online friendship became increasingly controlling and manipulative, ultimately leading Breck to a flat in Essex, where he was murdered.
In this episode, we’ll look at who Breck was, his family and the life he was living before he met Lewis Daynes, how their online relationship developed, the concerns Breck’s mother Lorin had about the friendship, and the events that led to the devastating night of February 17, 2014. We’ll also look at the investigation, Daynes’ arrest and conviction, and the work Breck’s mother has done since his death to educate young people and families about the dangers of online grooming.
Following Breck’s death, Lorin LaFave founded The Breck Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping children and young people stay safe online and recognise the signs of grooming and exploitation. The foundation continues to share Breck’s story in schools and communities across the UK, with the aim of preventing another family from experiencing what theirs did.
You can find out more about The Breck Foundation and the work inspired by Breck’s story here: www.breckfoundation.org

If you or someone you know is worried about grooming, exploitation or something happening online, Childline is available on 0800 1111 for children and young people. If you are an adult worried about a child, you can contact the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000. In an emergency, always call 999. The Breck Foundation also provides information and signposts to organisations that can offer help and advice.
