In the first four-and-a-half chapters of Galatians, Paul makes it clear that false teachers are perverting the gospel and trying to deceive the Galatians into following the Old Testament Law. Starting in Galatians 5:13, Paul makes a transition and begins answering the following questions that will be discussed in the message…

1.) How should we think about sin now that we understand we are free from law-following?

2.) If our goal is to be free from sin, how do we accomplish that goal without law-following?

In order to help the Galatians understand how they had been tricked into returning to following the Old Testament Law, Paul explains to them the purpose of the Law. Understanding the purpose of the Law is the first step toward getting free from legalism.

Understanding what the Bible teaches about law and grace is critically important, because subtle misunderstandings of Scripture can be the difference between walking in grace-righteousness and works-righteousness. In Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he addressed an entire church that had abandoned the truth of the Gospel and began practicing legalism in its place (Gal. 1:6-7). By studying this letter, we can protect ourselves from falling into the same trap.
