The way God interacted with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden reveals to us that love is a choice. If God forced us to love Him, it would not be love. It would be coercion or manipulation or control or some unloving dynamic. The same is true for relationships between humans. We have to allow other people the freedom to choose to love us or reject us, otherwise we will never truly experience love.
Along this line, we also have to take some risks and allow other people to know our needs, so they can choose to freely love us. However, the nature of sin distorts how we view ourselves and it can cause us to be ashamed and hide the real us. It is critical that we stop hiding behind fig leaves like Adam and Eve did and let other people know our needs. Otherwise, we will never know true intimacy (‘Into Me You See’).
