Intro:

Living Holy lives in a hostile world requires

Individually: You embody holiness by being in God’s word

In our culture: You express holiness with your submission

To live holy amidst hostility

You exhibit holiness in your marriage

Research by John Gottman: if you see contempt in your marriage you’re on the slope of divorce.

Peter teaches that the antidote of contempt is HONOR

You exhibit holiness in your marriage when:

You are honoring your non-Christian spouse

Wives are honoring your husband

Husband are honoring your wife

Honoring your Non-Christian Spouse vs 1-2

One spouse knows Jesus the other does not (How?)

Believer marries unbeliever

Believer marries a professing believer

Two non-believers marry and one converts

Context of antiquity

Christian spouse living a godly and holy life for their spouse

Wives honoring your husband vs 3-6

Focus on internal not External

Have a Quiet and Gentle Spirit

1. Living Holy lives in a hostile world requires:

a. Individually: You are feeding yourself good nutrition (The Word of God)

b. Today we will see what that looks like in relationship to the world around you 

2. To live holy amidst hostility

a. We are called to have an attitude of submission 

1. Submit to authority of every institution vs 13-14

a. Contrast between Christians context then to ours now

b. Honoring is respecting the authority of every institution 

2. What submitting look like vs 15-20

a. Do good to silence the ignorant

b. Live free but don’t use your freedom as a cover up for evil

Abraham’s background 

When you Dare to Draw Near to God, You can master your circumstances 

Abraham believed the Lord vs 1-6 

God is the anchor to Abraham’s soul 

(How can Abraham anchor his soul to God like that?) 

God made an unconditional covenant promise vs 8-11 

God calls Abraham to set together a covenant ratification ceremony 

God ratified that the whole ceremony Himself 

Abraham, may I be cut off if I don’t do my part of the promise. But Abraham, may I be cut off if you don’t do yours. 

Reflect and Discuss  

When was the last time you sat down and sought the Lord? To ask the simple question, “How do I know that you will do what you said you will do?” Jeremiah 29:13 said, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”  

Spend this week reading through the gospels again, but this time, before you read ask the question, “How do I know that you will do what you said you will do?” And start reading looking for that answer.

Reflect and Discuss  

Have you demonized someone for having opposing views as yours? Spend this week praying for that person and for your heart. Ask the Lord to give you a humble heart.  

Spend this week opening the Word of God and reading it. Listen to what God is saying to you personally through the readings.

1. When you Dare to Draw Near to God 

a. You will face trials, in order to take you into deeper transformation (consider it pure joy, when you face trials of every kind…; God will save you as is,  but He will never leave you as is). 

     b. You will receive suffering  

          i. Though God is not the author of suffering, we learn that suffering is not outside of His control. 

          ii. Suffering is used to give you the right perspective of Him, to reveal your true heart towards Him, and to lean fully upon Christ.  

2. Today we will learn that when you Dare to Draw Near to God 

     a. Your faith will be tested

    a. How we we are going to get the courage to face our test of faith? 

    b. How we are going to get the way to do it?
