True Story # 78 Robert Drysdale
Robert Drysdale is a Brazilian-American Brazilian jiu-jitsu 4th degree black belt under Léo Vieira, a retired mixed martial artist and an instructor at his own BJJ academy, "Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu". Having won multiple World Championships, he was referred to by Vice magazine as "America's jiu-jitsu superhero", regarded by BJJ Heroes as "the most accomplished American Grappler of his generation" and as the best Submission Wrestler in the World by Gracie Magazine.
Drysdale remains the only American to have won the two most prestigious titles in all of jiu-jitsu including the IBJJF World Championship and the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship – Open Division ADCC, submitting Marcelo Garcia in just over two minutes, a feat considered to be the equivalent of "out-swimming" Michael Phelps. That same year he was regarded as the best Submission Wrestler in the World by Gracie Magazine.
Apart from training BJJ and MMA champions, after beginning his professional career in MMA in 2010 he posted a record of 7 wins and no losses, 6 of them being via first-round submission, while one was a second-round submission. After two failed drug tests and only one fight in the UFC, Drysdale retired in 2019.
He is currently running his own academy, a large BJJ association Zenith with Rodrigo Cavaca, teaching seminars world-wide and commentating for PFL/DAZN, FloSports and ACBJJ (Absolute Berkut Championship Jiu-Jitsu) in both English and Portuguese.
