The Hopi believe in a number of Kachina or spirits. They fall into a few categories. The Guards or warriors who enforce communal cleaning of springs or actas guards to prevent interruptions during ceremonies. They may carry yucca whips or bows. The Runners who are racing kachinas who run and race with the men of the pueblos during ceremonies. Those who lose the race are whipped with yucca leaves, are forced to eat chile or have mud thrown at them by the Runners, while those who beat them are given piki bread. Female kachinas are the wives, mothers and sisters of the other kachina spirits, but they are often still portrayed by men. The exception is Pachavuin Mana. Each usually accompanies another kachina. Animal kachinas who act as advisors, doctors and teachers. They have taught the use and administration of herbs in healing and taught the warriors about avoiding danger. Ogres are disciplinary kachinas. Their purpose is to frighten children into good behavior. During ceremonies, they demand food and visit each home in the pueblo or village. Each ogre has his or her own personality and role within a ceremony. Lastly, Other kachina groups can include plants, whippers, hunters and kachinas borrowed from other pueblos.

El Sombrerón is a legendary figure in Guatemala. He is described as a short man with a large hat who appears at night to serenade or court young women. El Sombrerón is known for his obsession with women's long, beautiful hair. He plays a guitar and uses a magic spell to enchant the women, causing them to fall in love with him. He then braids their hair in intricate styles, using magical knots that are impossible to untangle. He is said to be a skilled musician and dancer, captivating his victims with his talents. He often visits women's homes or frequents places where they gather, such as the outskirts of towns, rivers, or abandoned fields. It is believed that if he becomes infatuated with a woman, he will cast a spell on her, causing her to go mad or fall ill. Some versions of the legend even suggest that he kidnaps women and takes them to his underground lair. Ladies keep this weirdo away from your beautiful hair.

The Tlahuelpuchi typically appears as an attractive woman during the day. However, at night, it undergoes a transformation, growing wings and becoming a fearsome creature with sharp teeth and claws. In its transformed state, it seeks out victims to feed upon, often targeting infants, the elderly, or those who are vulnerable or sick. In this last episode of the series sit back and enjoy the creepy tales of some who escaped the Tlahuelpuchi  and some who did not.  Remember to go to our merch store before the sale ends on June 5th.

 In rural Tlaxcala Mexico, the vampire witch known as the tlahuelpuchi is much feared.  At least a hundred legends about the tlahuelpuchi exist.  The tlahuelpuchi is a person believed to possess magical powers, including the power to transform themselves into one of several animals and in that form attack and suck the blood of humans.  They are a woman who is considered to be the most bloodthirsty and evil.   Elements found in tlahuelpuchi can be traced to ancient Nahua  goddesses. Their archetype was further modified to include influences from the witches of Spain when the country was converted to Christianity so it is said. We are continuing our Mesoamerica series with the Tlahuelpuchi.  The Nahuas believe in a creature they call the Tlahuelpuchi. It is said to have the form of a woman, often described as beautiful and alluring, which helps it deceive and entice its victims. It has long, flowing hair that cascades down its back, and its eyes are known to possess a captivating, mesmerizing quality, sometimes described as glowing or piercing with an otherworldly intensity. The creature may appear to be harmless and attractive at first, luring unsuspecting individuals closer. The Nahuas are a larger indigenous group that encompasses various subgroups and communities across Mexico and Central America. They share a common linguistic heritage as speakers of the Nahuatl language. The Nahuas predate the Aztec civilization and have a long history that includes other prominent civilizations such as the Toltecs and Teotihuacanos.
