My guest today is THE definition of the word go-getter. To share with you in detail Mel Histon’s resume and achievements will be an extended intro to say the least. So before we get into the interview, here’s just a glimpse at what she’s been up to in the last few years.

After 10 years in corporate, Mel left to establish her photography business - a decision that would open new doors and a completely new life. After experiencing a number of life-altering events, Melissa created The Sista Code in May 2014 with a dream to see women empowered, happy and connected. 

In 2016 she established Got Your Back Sista the charitable arm of The Sista Code movement. Her vision with this non-profit organisation is to see women and their children happy, thriving and living independently after escaping the trauma of domestic violence.

Got Your Back Sista offers benevolent relief and support to women and children escaping domestic violence and are at risk of living below the poverty line.  In just this past 3 months as the country went into lockdown, the charity received 3x the number of calls for support.

And Mel’s love of community, uplifting women and creative projects doesn’t stop there. At the end of 2019, Mel launched her personal project the Hey Soul Sista podcast and just this year she opened an “op shop” to support the Got Your Back Sista charity.

In the spirit of the True to You podcast, we go wide and deep with this conversation. Exploring everything from Mel’s career journey, to a life-altering cancer diagnosis to family to mentors. This woman is truly remarkable and I am so pleased to be able to share this episode with you today. She is an example of someone who has followed her heart on the path towards meaningful work.

Emilia Cardillo is the founder of boutique law firm - Cardillo Commercial Lawyers. She is also the first female accredited specialist in business law in Newcastle, a mother two two beautiful boys and when she's not doing all this you'll find her running trails.

Her work specialises in commercial, leasing and property law. Though this might sound like terms that are only relevant to big business - Emilia has first hand experience in small business after launching an e-commerce store Royal Rhino back in 2016. Emilia also became our fairy godmother for many small business during COVID-19 as they navigated what was a challenging and confusing time.

Clancy Allen is a partner, daughter, mother to a spirited 4 year old boy and has worked as a doula since 2017 attending home births, birth centre births and hospital births. She is a Birthing From Within mentor and prenatal yoga teacher. She has also studied and practised kinesiology, and in her former career was a civil litigation lawyer for 6 years.

She offers birth mentoring, postnatal doula support, mothering the mother ceremonies, and her online course, Yoga for Empowered Birth is launching on 4 June 2020.

I’m joined by Hannah Mitchell, Antoinette Cano and Kendall Dodson - these three women I had the pleasure of working with in the last year and each of them have undertaken the significant task of starting a small business, some even doing a complete career switch in the process.
