Bill shares how his Catholic upbringing, sobriety, AA, spiritual reading, and The Urantia Book shaped his relationship with God. Marty brings in his own path through church, agnosticism, and a powerful experience with an Indian guru. In this episode, Marty and Bill explore the difference between self-management and self-leadership.
Bill explains how self-management can become exhausting inner conflict, especially when one part of us tries to control another. They connect this to addiction recovery, workplace dynamics, 12-step programs, IFS, ACA, and Byron Katie’s work.
Together, they look at how self-awareness helps us move from control into compassion, choice, and deeper trust in the Self.

In this episode, Bill and Marty interview Morgan Monte, an Internal Family Systems (IFS) Level 3 practitioner and co-author of the Parts Work Guidebook, joined by her Labradoodle Finn. Morgan shares recognizing her neurodivergence in elementary school through social misunderstandings like sarcasm and unspoken context, and how that affected communication during the three-plus-year, five-author book project. They discuss how group ruptures and frustration were repaired by using IFS, including Bill’s “get it done” part becoming controlling and Morgan’s “I don’t belong because I’m different” part withdrawing. Morgan describes IFS training challenges mainly as performance anxiety and fear of evaluation, and how IFS helped her access more Self energy, confidence, clarity, and authenticity.

In this episode, Bill and Marty talk about how having too many meaningful projects can create a “log jam” that leads to overwhelm, stress, and sudden quitting. Using Martin’s seven projects as an example, they walk through a coaching process to get clear on the goal, spot what’s causing the backlog, measure progress, and make a realistic plan. They use the urgent/important matrix, factor in deadlines and inspiration, and show how calendar time-blocking and firm cutoff dates can help restore balance and reflect the “True You.”

In this episode, Marty and Bill’s co-authors Allison Dyer and Islena Faircrest discuss creating The Parts Work Guidebook, released on Kindle with a paperback coming soon. They explain how the book grew from their Parts Work Practice group, where they adapted exercises from Bonnie Weiss and Jay Earley’s Self Therapy Workbook, eventually writing their own guide with 24 exercises to help people learn Internal Family Systems parts work and build self-leadership. The co-authors describe the four-year collaborative process, including conflicts, editing challenges, and “rupture and repair” moments that activated protectors and exiles, and how they used the book’s exercises, structure, humor, and self-regulation to keep writing. Each shares personal growth around impatience, caretaking, avoidance, and connection.

In this episode, Bill and Marty talk with divorce, couples, and life coach Nick Meima about purpose, connection, marriage, divorce, stepparenting, and the inner beliefs that shape our lives. Nick shares how his path moved from aging and cohousing into relationship work, and why real growth starts with facing “not enough” beliefs, getting support, and doing the inner work needed to live with more love, maturity, and purpose.
About Nick Meima:
Nick Meima is a divorce coach, couples coach, and life coach whose work centers on intimacy, disconnection, and what it takes to build healthier relationships. His path began early through a deep interest in aging and care for older adults, which led him to earn graduate degrees in marriage, family, and child counseling and in gerontology. He later served as the CEO of a large retirement community, helped create multiple intergenerational cohousing communities, and spent years bringing people together across age groups and life stages. Today, Nick works with individuals, couples, business owners, and leaders, helping them move through divorce, relationship strain, and major life transitions with more clarity, maturity, and care.

In this episode, Bill and Marty welcome writing coach, counselor, and memoir teacher Jerry Waxler to discuss how memoir supports personal growth and connection. Marty shares how Jerry’s guidance led him to restructure his book about beauty into a memoir to create a more intimate narrative. Jerry explains the “redemptive arc” as a core principle of memoir, describing how stories move from struggle to growth and agency, with parallels to the 12 steps and recovery. The group explores how memoir reading and writing build empathy across cultures and experiences. Jerry also addresses shame, privacy, and how telling difficult truths can bring insight, release, and healing, and he shares his website for memoir coaching and classes.
About Jerry:
Jerry Waxler hit bottom early in adulthood and began a long climb through recovery, self-help, therapy, and wisdom traditions. At fifty, he returned to school to become a therapist, only to discover that to help others, he had to keep growing. Memoir reading provided insight into the vast library of human experience offered in memoirs. And writing his own memoirs helped him rebuild shattered segments of his past. His continued interest in Twelve Step recovery, and his ongoing research into the many branches of psychotherapy, led him to Internal Family Systems, which he sees as a pinnacle of his journey toward mental wholeness. Now, 55 years sober, Jerry’s life work is helping others grow through therapy, writing, and the transformative power of turning private memories into shared stories.
