MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Republican presidential ticket came together when Donald Trump named JD Vance as his running mate. In turning to the 39-year-old Ohio senator, the Republican nominee injected new energy into a campaign that has centered in recent weeks on questions of age following President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance. The Republican National Convention opened Monday less than 48 hours after Trump was the subject of a shocking assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Trump made a grand entrance, walking into the convention hall with a bandage over his injured right ear and waving to the crowd. The shooting, which left Trump injured and one man dead, loomed over the convention with speakers resolved to win back the White House.

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle addressed the assassination attempt on Donald Trump during an interview with ABC News.

Biden will speak Tuesday at the NAACP convention in Las Vegas, aiming to showcase his administration’s support for Black voters who are a tentpole of the Democratic coalition.

James Sikking of “Hill Street Blues” has died at 90. His publicist Cynthia Snyder said in a statement Sunday evening that Sikking died of complications from dementia. Born in Los Angeles, Sikking played a hardened and at times quirky police lieutenant on the revolutionary police procedural and the titular character's kindhearted dad on “Doogie Howser, M.D.”
