“One of the things we always talk about with coaches is that you should be willing to do the things you ask your athletes to do. So, I should also be just as willing to answer the questions that I ask my guests.”
Marking the 6-month milestone for the podcast, Coach Scott Charland leads a role-reversal episode and takes the interviewer’s chair for the day, putting host Nate Huffstutter on the hot seat to answer the types of questions he often asks of his guests.
The coaches discuss Coach Nate’s career pathway from journalism into sports technology and sports coaching and the core values he’s tried to instill in his female athletes on the soccer and softball fields:
1. The journey is the reward
2. Selflessness and being willing to sacrifice for the good of the team
3. By creating connection, you can be part of something greater than the sum of its parts.
A recurring topic is the value of communication, whether person-to-person, in large groups, or using online mediums, with a common thread being that “communication is contagious.” Building on that concept, Coach Nate encourages fellow coaches and listeners to use their voice to advocate for the principles and values they demands from political leaders and the government.
Ultimately, the discussion shifts to bravery, risk, and being willing to stand up for the things you believe in regardless of cost.
“On the soccer field, you will hear coaches constantly saying, be brave, be brave. And that means being willing to go into a hard tackle. It means being willing to use a skill move that may not work. It's, constantly be brave, be brave, be brave. And then in your own life, if you have that moment where you're like, ‘Hey, I would like to speak out against this, whether it's immigration policy or the way that DEI is under attack or any other thing that you think is, an issue that you want to speak out against,’ then be brave.”
