On the heels of feeding the 5000, the crowd goes looking for Jesus who travelled to Capernaum. When they catch up with him, Jesus exposes their false motives for following him and states, "I AM the bread of life" - a statement with profound meaning that would result in many turning away from following him.

Jesus responds to skepticism by presenting credible witnesses to his identity—John the Baptist, his works, the Father, and the Scriptures—revealing that the evidence for belief has always been there. By healing a paralyzed man on the Sabbath, Jesus caused an uproar. Not only did he demonstrate his authority to heal but also his authority to bring reform to the Sabbath and claim equality with God the Father. While the lame man walked away in freedom, Jesus created a target on his own back for this very act.

In a culture of burnout and productivity, Sabbath is God’s life-giving gift that frees us from exhaustion and from defining our worth by our work. In the story of Zechariah, we see a man who goes from doubt to praise after seeing the fulfillment of God's promise that he would have a son. But Zechariah would go through a humbling process before seeing the fulfillment of this promise. In the end, we see that God's grace, not Zechariah's faithfulness nor certainty, leads to the birth of John the Baptist who would be the forerunner for Jesus.
