“My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?” Oh! There are so many questions that come out of this passage. Why does Jesus have to die this way? Why does He cry out these words from the Cross? What mysteries are being revealed here about our life with God? Lots to look at this in this passage!

In Jesus' third saying on the cross, he thinks not of himself, but selflessly shows his concern for others. In the process, he honours his mother and emphasizes the new spiritual family he is creating.

Jesus spent his ministry among the outcasts and the sinners right up to the end, being crucified between two common criminals. The reactions of these men to seeing Jesus on the cross gives us insight into how we see Jesus on the cross, demanding salvation or recognizing our condemned state and hoping for Jesus' remembrance of us.

In the first of his seven sayings on the cross, Jesus says of the very people who are crucifying him, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." This powerful statement has profound implications for us - we must admit our need for forgiveness, forgive others and receive the forgiveness of God for ourselves.

While the crowds ask more and more questions of Jesus, he gives a confusing statement about going away and no longer being able to find him. Jesus' game of hide and seek continues in our passage this week, but it's accompanied with an invitation for those seeking to find a true source of satisfaction amid the distractions of this world. That satisfaction is Jesus himself and the provision for this life is represented by the streams of living water that bubble and flow out of believers to signal to the world that Jesus brings life and life to the full.

Why did Jesus come? And how would he - the Messiah - go about establishing his kingdom? These were the questions to which his disciples and other Jews had come to false conclusions on. Jesus would not come to establish his rule and reign through fleshly means nor would he seek fame or self-glory Instead, he came to do the will of the Father and glorify Him.
