When John the Baptist sees Jesus' ministry succeeding, he chooses humility over comparison and jealousy. We learn from his example that humility means having a proper view of self - knowing who we are and who we are not. Jesus won't let us try to contain him as a good teacher or moral example. He is not satisfied with that explanation. He is our Saviour, our Messiah - or he is nothing. He did not come to condemn us - but to save us from our own drive to condemn ourselves.

When Jesus arrives in Jerusalem during the Passover festival, he sees that the Temple has been turned into a marketplace. He makes a whip and drives out the animals being sold and flips the tables of the moneychangers. The question is "why?" To understand Jesus' anger, we have to look at the significance of the Temple. What we come to realize is that not only is Jesus justified in this overt display of anger, but this very act shows us God's heart for love and justice.

In John 2:1-12, we see the first of seven signs in the gospel pointing to the divine identity of Jesus. At a wedding in Cana when the wine runs out, Jesus turns turns water into wine. In this scene, we see not only Jesus' power, but his provision and care.

As John continues to introduce his gospel, we encounter multiple declarations of who Jesus is. Most importantly, through the words of John the Baptist, we’re introduced to “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

In the introduction to his gospel, John presents Jesus as the divine Word and Light who came in the flesh to reveal God the Father and invite us into His family. As we “Behold Him" we come to see that Jesus is full of life, grace and truth.
