Prison offer little or no trauma-care or mental health services. No one talks about

the trauma that women experience prior to prison that goes untreated and they become more traumatized by incarceration.

Women in jail are the fastest growing correctional population in the country.

In Michigan, Black people constituted 15% of state residents, but 37% of people in jail and 53% of people in prison. Since 1980, the number of women in jail has increased 362%, and the number of women in prison has increased 239%.

Although men’s jail admissions have declined by 26 percent since 2008, women’s admissions have increased both as a total number

and as a proportion of all jail admissions. Women now make up almost one out of every four jail admissions, up from fewer than

one in 10 in 1983. Since 1970, the number of women in U.S. jails has increased 14-fold—from fewer than 8,000 to nearly 110,000 in

2013—and women in jail now account for approximately half of all women behind bars in the country.

Abdul Hakeem  is a steward of justice, a trailblazer who believes in equal justice under the law, as inscribed on the façade of the US Supreme Court building. A lifelong Detroit, he grew up in the city during the 1967 rebellion against police brutality when he and his family had to confront the reality, and the horrors, of institutionalized racism. It was during this era there was an unwritten rule that a black man living with a white woman and her children was met with harassment, threats and physical assaults by Detroit Police.

It was this experience with racism and terror that Abdul Hakeem carried with him throughout his life and made his decision today to confront the powers that be. He reminds them of our democratic principle that we the People have the power to check those in office against governmental abuse of authority. This is why Abdul rises to the occasion and speaks out to confront government abuse, be it police, prosecutors, or other elected officials. That, he emphasizes, is the essence of a true democracy: the right to speak up and not be oppressed for such free speech...

Although "WE" are on vacation....we had to POP-IN to have this very important conversation with Michigan Justice Advocacy about the.... "Good Time Makes Good Sense Initiative" ...... Restoring Good Time policy to Michigan Prisons. Michigan Justice Advocacy is doing a statewide petition drive to show Michigan Legislators that the citizens of Michigan want them to implement a good time policy. A Good Time policy will not only benefit the incarcerated, and encourage rehabilitation, impacted family will benefit and it will also relieve taxpayers of the expensive burden of incarceration. Presently, Michigan is 1 of 6 States in the country without a credit policy for those that are incarcerated. Michigan is #1 in the United States for lengthy prison sentences. The Data has shown that being tough on crime and long prison sentences doesn’t reduce crime or make our communities any safer. In order for incarcerated people to be successful we must explore a different way to incentivize good behavior and give them life tools that they can use once released. Last year, 20 people who had been wrongfully convicted of crimes in Michigan were exonerated. Only one other state exonerated more people in 2020. Illinois had 22. Nationally, 129 people were exonerated.

Twelve of Michigan’s exonerations were people convicted of murder, three were for attempted murder, two were for child abuse, one was for robbery, one was for assault, and one was for selling or possessing drugs. Wayne County Conviction Integrity Unit as a driving force behind the state’s number of overturned convictions. The unit helped with 13 of the exonerations.

Our guest Larry Smith, exonerated February 2021... will be our Special Guest! Since Larry been home he’s been on a mission... advocating for the Over Incarcerated, Freeing the Innocent and Medically Frail! Larry spent 26 years incarcerated wrongfully in MDOC. Smith was 18 when he was sentenced in November 1994 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder and felony firearm convictions. He will also discuss the upcoming Wrongful Conviction Rally on June 4 in Detroit.

We will also have a guest panelist join us from New York, New York....Ms Shawanna Erena Vaughn founder of Silent Cry Inc. and a nationally-renowned humanitarian activist, facilitated Post-Traumatic Prison Disorder Shawanna W76337, an act that is a groundbreaking and necessary piece of legislation to address the mental health crisis faced by the American correctional system.

Systemic racism has led to the mass incarceration of Black People in America…

As of 2019, Black people are 14% of the U. S. population… and 40% of the U. S. incarcerated population …. for every 100,00 black person, 2,306 black people are either in the prison, on parole or probation system.

Black males were incarcerated at the rate of 4,347 inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents.

There are more African American men incarcerated in the U.S. than the total prison populations in India, Argentina, Canada, Lebanon, Japan, Germany, Finland, Israel and England combined."

There are only 19 million African American males in the United States, but collectively these countries represent over 1.6 billion people.Using data from the World Prison Brief and According to United States Department of Justice there are more Black males incarcerated in the United States than all women imprisoned globally.

A 2020 review study, stated that mass incarceration  in the United States "cannot be explained without reference to the centrality of racial politics.

Now….. what will be different about this conversation, We will take a look how Black Police Officers, Black Lawyers, Black Prosecutors, Black Judges and Black Elected officials who possibly thought they were doing the right thing, created problems even more grievous than the one they were trying to solve.

WHY DO INNOCENT PEOPLE PLEAD GUILTY TO CRIMES THEY DIDN’T COMMIT?

According to the Innocence Project....

-95%...of felony convictions in the U.S. are obtained through guilty pleas

-18%...of known exonerees pleaded guilty to crimes they didn’t commit

-65%...of 418 exonerees who pleaded guilty were people of color

-83%...of DNA exoneration plea cases resulted in identification of the alternate perpetrator

The United States criminal justice system could be so deeply flawed that innocent people are convicted of crimes they didn’t commit, it’s even harder to fathom that some of those innocent people actually felt compelled to plead guilty, often in exchange for a reduced sentence or to avoid the death penalty. When so many innocent people are agreeing to their own wrongful convictions, it’s time to acknowledge that something is very wrong. The plea system is not a bargain; it’s a problem that has no regard for innocence.

Our Criminal Justice System treat you better if you are rich and guilty than if you are poor and innocent. This two-tier system criminalizes poverty and is a structural reason for mass incarceration and racial inequality. It affects entire communities, devastates families for generations, and guts the presumption of innocence.

Black Women is the fastest-growing population of people incarcerated in jails and prisons over the past 50 years and as caregivers and space holders for our families and communities, there has been little discussion of the specific ways Black women experience the impacts of incarceration.

When you incarcerate a black man, it disrupts the household. When you incarcerate a black woman, it disrupts the community.

From the first interaction with police and throughout the entire Criminal Justice experience , Black people are criminalize, and discriminated every stage of the process. For far too long, Black & brown bodies have been profiled, surveilled, policed, lynched, choked, brutalized & murdered at the hands of the US Criminal Justice System.

There’s definitely a deep systemic problems of injustice, police brutality and mass incarceration in the United States.

The verdict was not Justice

It was Accountability!

We have so much more work to do!

Within minutes of the trial verdict, there was another police involved shooting resulting in a 15 year old losing her life!

Why is lethal force the first choice in situations regarding black people?

Why must we debate whether the shooting was justified?

Not to mention, there was another exoneration this week in Wayne County, Michigan!

There is so much we must confront in order to Heal ourselves and our communities!
