Confirmation Bias, coupled with tunnel vision and a rush to judgment, switches a case from an evidence-based investigation into a suspect-based one, in an effort to solve the case. When detectives and prosecutors think they’ve invested too much into a case to even consider the possibility that they may be wrong…even solid evidence that the suspect may not be the right guy gets discredited or outright ignored in order to not upset the momentum of closing the case. Inadequate Defense and Wrongful Convictions   The failure of overworked lawyers to investigate, call witnesses or prepare for trial has led to the conviction of innocent people. When a defense lawyer doesn’t do his or her job, the defendant suffers. Shrinking funding and access to resources for public defenders and court-appointed attorneys is only making the problem worse.  The National Registry of Exonerations in which Inadequate Legal Defense (ILD) was deemed a contributor to a wrongful conviction, found that investigative failures were far more frequent than other types of legal inadequacies in the Registry's ILD cases, appearing in 80.6% of cases, while trial errors were found in just 50.8% of these wrongful convictions. In 34.7% of cases, the failures were solely investigative. The Justice for Gerard Movement presents .... TURNING A MOMENT INTO A MOVEMENT! Junk Science, Forensic Fraud and Wrongful Convictions wk 4  Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is flawed.... It was popularized in the early 2000s, it has never been scientifically validated. Medical experts now know that their belief in how to diagnose a clear sign of child abuse based upon a determination of shaken baby syndrome was mistaken. This new understanding may cast doubt on hundreds of murder, assault, and child abuse convictions. Over the past two decades, newer scientific research has proven that accidents, diseases, and genetic conditions can cause the damning triad and other symptoms associated with shaken baby syndrome. Between 1990 and 2000 there were more than 200 convictions based on Shaken Baby Syndrome.” ...and from 2001 to 2015 there were 1,600 convictions according to a study conducted by The Washington Post. Only 16 people have been exonerated for assault or murder involving SBS according to the National Registry of Exonerations.
