  • TWiP Talks 44: iPad Pro vs Surface Pro
In this interview I sit down with my friend Giulio Sciorio to discuss his path from using the iPad, to Microsoft’s Surface. And ultimately back to the iPad. He explains that because of his unique minimalist workflow he can forsee a day soon where he’ll no longer purchase a “traditional” laptop computer.
We also discuss operating system trends overall, including VR, Voice Control systems as well as the potential convergence of iOS and MacOS. I pose the question, what is the “IDEAL” workflow… of course there is no one correct answer, but it sure is fun trying to guess where things might go!
Giulio is a minimalist photographer who creates content for the small screens in a social world.
G’s photographic roots began in film so he creates as much of his work as possible in camera. The reason for this is that he believes in a digital world this way of creating gets the work online fast.
His “mobile first” approach means content is designed to share from the start!

  • TWiP Talks 43: The Angry Millennial
A Millennial with Two Degrees — Turned Entrepreneur/Writer
Jose Rosado is a Philadelphia native residing in Baltimore with a background in Communications with a Bachelors in Advertising and an MBA in Marketing. He is a self-taught photographer, and describes himself as “pretty humble, since the only way I seem to know how to learn something is the hard way”.
    In his own words:
As an Millennial with two degrees turned entrepreneur, I’ve been able to say that I’ve learned from the best of life’s teaching moments. After six years of working as a photographer full-time, I transitioned into a digital project manager role working remotely at a large publicly-traded multi-media company in NYC.
Four years later, after being laid off, I decided to go back to making things again – which embodied writing again, teaching photography at local colleges, taking photos again, + starting a podcast, The Angry Millennial, where I get to sit with some of the most successful creatives + talk about failure, fear, and life-lessons with guests like CreativeLive CEO – Chase Jarvis, actor Chris Sullivan of The Knick & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, former oDesk CEO + VC – Gary Swart, Help Portrait Founder – Jeremy Cowart, & award-winning author – Brad Lomenick.
With regards to my writing, I’ve worked as a staff writer for photography juggernaut, Fstoppers.com, as well as contributor to Petapixel.com, Chimera Lighting & Thought Catalog, writing about creative entrepreneurial struggles & successful habits, as well as interviewing CEOs, founders, and creatives. I also am Editor of Creatives Against Depression, a site + Medium publication that helps raise awareness and open conversations around mental health in the creative industry.

  • TWiP Talks 41: Out of Chicago with Chris Smith
There’s a new photography conference on the block — and it’s called “Out of Chicago”!
In this episode of TWiP Talks I sit down with Out of Chicago and Out of New York founder Chris Smith. We discuss trade shows in general and their viability, how he managed to create such a thriving and successful conference in an already overcrowded industry, and how his conferences are different from the big guys.
    About Out of Chicago
    From Chris…
“Out of Chicago brings together passionate photographers for amazing photo experiences! Learn from, be inspired by, and shoot alongside your photography heroes.
We have been running photography tours, workshops, and photowalks in the Chicago area since 2011. In 2014 we thought we’d try running a no-holds-barred photography conference in the heart or Chicago. It turned out to be super fun and everyone loved it! 2016 marks the third year of the summer conference and we are expanding to include a winter conference, portrait conference, and we’re going to try the same kind of conference in New York City this October.
In 2013 I wrote The Photographer’s Guide to Chicago. We know Chicago photo locations as well as anyone.

Last year we had over 300 passionate photographers attend The Out of Chicago Photography Conference.

Since 2011 we have teamed-up with some of our favorite photographers including Rick Sammon, Bryan Peterson, Art Wolfe, Matt Kloskowski, Frederick Van Johnson, Elia Locardi, Thomas Leuthard, Valerie Jardin, Bill Fortney, Tim Wallace, Julia Anna Gospodarou, Scott Bourne, Jimmy McIntyre, Lindsay Adler, Jen Rozenbaum, and hundreds more.”

  • TWiP Talks 39: Christopher Berry on Fuji Love
Have you ever wondered why people who shoot with Fuji cameras seem so enthusiastic about their gear? I guess this applies to photographers and every brand, but in particular folks that shoot Fuji seem to really, REALLY love their cameras.
In this interview I have a conversation with Chris Berry, a great guy whom I met at the 2016 WPPI conference in Las Vegas. Chris and I talk about that seemingly irrational affinity for Fuji gear, as well as that “Fuji look” that everyone is always talking about!
We also dive into some of the cameras in the Fuji line including X-PRO2, the camera that Chris personally shoots with, as well as some of the other cameras in the Fujifilm lineup. We also talk about lowlight performance of this gear as well as focusing speed.
Fuji and Sony seem to be gathering lots of mind share when it comes to new cameras, and they seem to be spreading what I call gear “Stockholm Syndrome”… falling in love with one’s captor.
Let’s see if we can’t get to the bottom of all of this!
Get in touch with Chris on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.
Here are a few shots created by Chris with his beloved Fuji system!
A quick note on the video – the photo of young boy in the red shirt was not shot with his Fuji.

  • TWiP Talks 38: Karen Hutton on Fuji and My Little Pony
My friend Karen Hutton is an amazing photographer, and more specifically she’s an amazing LANDSCAPE photographer!
Karen and I have known each other for years, and a while back ago she and I were in San Francisco shooting at the Sutro Bath ruins – right before having lunch. At the time Karen was still Canon dSLR, and I was explaining the size and weight advantages of shooting with smaller mirrorless systems. And ironically it was around that time during the conversation that Karen, with her backpack full of Canon gear, slipped and fell on the rocks. Luckily, she was unhurt… except for her pride.
According to her, it was at that point that she made the mental decision to at least try out mirrorless. But Karen being Karen, she was going to go about it methodically. Testing each offering to find out which system could possibly be a fit for her style.
As it turns out, after testing several different systems including Sony Panasonic and Fuji — the winner was Fuji.
In this interview Karen tonight sit down to discuss that switch, and why after all these years she’s now so bullish on Fuji. We also discuss her upcoming retreat in Provence France!

  • TWiP Talks 37: DJI’s Phantom 4 – A Closer LOOK!
Former DJI employee Eric Cheng joins me to discuss the newest aircraft to hit the drone market — the Phantom 4 from DJI. Sporting new features like collision avoidance, longer battery life and object tracking – is this new drone the new standard by which all others will be judged? Find out in this episode of TWiP Talks.
Eric and I discuss the improvements on this drone over its predecessor, the Phantom 3. What does adding so-called “machine intelligence” and “machine learning” bring the the drone world? Also, do the improvements over the P3 warrant a purchase of this new flying camera? Or should you wait for the next one.
Want to dive deeper? Be sure to check out Eric’s excellent review and first look over on his site, http://drone.farm.
