I speak with Aydan for the first time, a name frequently referred to in one of my favourite podcasts @TheRoadtoTarValon, and he truly is passionate about a lot of the injustices his countryfolk are experiencing at the moment. Hinrich works, on a mostly voluntary basis, for organisations that defend human rights. He is Green Party politician in his local district of Reinickendorf where he and has party have championed the support of refugees through direct engagement with the community. He will represent Amnesty International Deutschland at the Global Assembly of Amnesty International where current and future paths will be decided upon and undertaken. Hinrich also works for the Human Rights Foundation, which provides funding and support to human rights defenders.

Roald Dahl wrote some of the most amazing children’s stories I’ve even read. Edgar Allan Poe, a great of his age, brought so much to literature, inspiring new forms and styles and genres. Of course I have questions about the character, and I do not know enough about him to lay down definitive thoughts on the subject. I have read that at the age of 26 he married his 13-year-old cousin. What can I think of this? I cannot judge the past by the morals of today, true, but I cannot ignore the past nor its crimes and nor its distastefulness. Too many people will forgive crimes of the past citing how different things were back then. I cannot join their number. When we refer to figures of the past we should call out their deficiencies, their errors and their crimes. Talent should not hide inadequacies, no matter who the person or people may be. The same standards should be applied today.

There is trouble in his works and I feel it here too. He always felt himself to be different, since his childhood. One wonders what he is referring to. What passions of his were uncommon? He clearly danced to a different tune, yet we know not what tune it is. Was he being autobiographical? Was this an assessment of himself or a fictional character? Why would he lay down such depth where anyone might view it? Or was he writing this as observations of others or AN other? What mystery, binding or torrent? We know his life was challenging and unsettled, so how much of himself was he pouring into these words?

I wonder of the “demon” in his view, was it he himself or was the demon perched on his shoulder? Or was the demon someone else he had to contend with? Or was the demon alcohol, an addiction that caused him to miss out on opportunities.

Poe was a complicated character and a much deeper analysis of him and his work is needed to understand the depths of what drove him…

I met Lanna Idriss when she was the head of Amnesty International in Germany. Amnesty International is an exceptional organisation to work with for so many reasons. The work they do is immeasurably important and the people who do that work are dedicated and resilient. Every single one I have had the pleasure to meet has left an impression upon me and I am forever grateful for the opportunity of working with such an organisation.

Currently Lanna is the head of SOS Kinderdoerfer which as a NGO manages the support internationally of children’s villages which currently takes care of 77,000 children. That is a staggering number and Lanna is determined to increase that figure as much as possible. Imagine the kind of fortitude, self-control and humility that is needed in operating in these fields of endeavour.

In this second episode of reliving the joys of what entertained us, Greg, a rubber duck and I express our worldly views on the importance of comedy and how the timeless classic that is Blackadder, starring so many wonderful actors, in many ways shaped our humour. Ben Elton, Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie, Steven Fry, Rowan Atkinson, Miranda Richardson, and Patsy Byrne were all brilliant. That must surely have been one of the main reasons why it was so successful. They just worked so well together.

The story lines were super and the historical characters they parodied, such as Sir Walter Raleigh, George IV, Samuel Johnson, and the fictitious Baby eating bishop of Bath and Wells played by the late Ronald Lacey.

There is so much we could write about Blackadder, but I would recommend if you haven’t seen it already, to do so. It was a special show that began in the 1980s and exhibited how truly great British comedy did such a good job of laughing at itself.

Tatiana is actively involved in the world of sustainability, working towards climate neutrality and trying to introduce ways in which society can pen many future chapters, even though I must confess to my negativity in the matter. I am lucky to know many people involved in NGOs, working on city/local level projects and trying to network to bring together innovations that improve not only the climate but also quality of life. It is fair to say that much remains to be done.

In this podcast we focus on sustainability, but we also march ingloriously onto topics such as Pritti Patel’s ill-conceived plan to send migrants to Rwanda and through this topic we walk, tamely, into a polite disagreement between liberalism and socialism. No punches were thrown in the making of this podcast.
